Queridos Amigos de Sta. Luisa:

estos días parece que hay demasiadas cosas fuera de nuestro control;

Padre Gary Zender

p.d. ¡Los sigo extrañando!

Dear Friends of St. Louise,

This is a follow-up to last week’s column on

self-care during the lock-down. I will have one

more installment next week, and I am grateful

to my brother priest Fr. Thomas Nathe for the

information. Even these days when there

seems to be so much beyond our control,

which can increase anxiety and depression,

there are simple things that each of us can do

to alleviate those kinds of burdens. I hope

that you find this information helpful.

Facing Anxiety and Stress

Problem: We are all experiencing a collective trauma. There is so

much unknown – economically, socially, health-wise – that people are

overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. We may be either more anxiety-

prone or more depression- prone.

A. There has been a 45% increase in calls to NAMI helpline

(National Alliance of Mental Illness), 20% reported being anxiety-

related

B. Calls for threats or attempts of suicide are up 23% from the 10

days prior to the state of emergency in Portland (KATU)

Focus Areas of Support for Anxiety

1. Warning signs may be excessive worries more days than not,

consistent insomnia, intrusive fears, ongoing feelings of

impending doom, occurrence of panic attacks, feeling

consistently keyed up or agitated, recurrent thoughts of death.

2. Plug into social support (contact your people every day)

3. Limit your intake of news media (once a day or week for the

same scheduled time) – wasted time, major distraction/focus,

and anxiety

4. Create a “protect your peace plan” (example: nap, bath,

comforting book, poems, peaceful music, bake, disengage from

social media, reading Scripture, prayer)

5. Increase self-care activities

6. Physical exercise is super-helpful

7. Implement a healthy sleep routine (this affects the adrenaline in

your body): lights-out same time every night, out of bed same

time every morning

8. Seek professional help when necessary (Counselor/Doctor)

Let’s keep each other in prayer even as we continue to practice social

distancing. May our prayer and concern for each other divide our

sorrows and increase our joys!

With my sincere prayer and care for you!

Fr. Gary Zender

p.s. I still miss you!

Please join St. Louise staff for a mini-retreat to prepare our hearts for this feast on Saturday, May 23 from 6:30PM-7:30PM following Coffee and Donuts. We will offer our reflections on the ways we observe the Holy Spirit working in our lives during this time. Parishioners will be asked to reflect on this theme in their own lives and submit responses to be displayed prior to the live-streamed Mass on Saturday, May 30, at 5PM. Register for this event : https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7a15ixZSQAqvpR-5Cshf8Q. Come Holy Spirit Retreat with Ron Ryan, D.Min. (Part Two) Please join us for a retreat on the theme of Pentecost on the feast of Pentecost, Sunday, May 31, from 10AM-11:30AM. Ron Ryan has worked for the Archdiocese of Seattle for many years in many capacities. Since the Fall of 2019 he has served as Special Project Coordinator for the Archdio-cese. He has served in full-time ministry for 40 years, and has a doctorate in pastoral ministry. St. Louise School News School Closed While our building may be closed, our students in our parish school still deserve access to high-quality learning. We take comfort in the strength and creativity of our St. Louise faculty and staff and the stability of our family partnerships to push our community forward during this challenging time. It's truly a team effort to keep our community strong. Our incredible teachers have been providing distance learning to our students since March 16. Our commitment to provide our high-quality educational program has never been so focused. As a private school where education, faith, and family come first, we know how important it is to maintain learning and allow our students to grow and thrive. Our parents are partners in this, and we thank them for supporting their children as they continue their studies at home.

HELLO WONDERFUL CAMPERS ENTERING GRADES K-5:

Our incredibly fun-loving and professional team love what they do and will provide campers with unforgettable memories. Campers will get wet, be challenged with outdoor skills, create and explore. Our schedule is flexible and offers security, independence and stimulation. Camps are open to students from any school who will be en-tering grades K-5 this Fall. For more information or to register online, please go to stlouiseschool.org “clubs and activities” then “summer camps”. Questions? Please contact Summer Camp Director at [email protected].

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Everyone is invited to join in celebrating a no-vena to the Virgin Mary under her title, "Our Lady of Perpetual Help," for nine Saturdays, beginning May 2. "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" is the name giv-en to Mary as depicted in a famous, centuries-old icon in the Byzantine style. The icon and the devotion to Mary it inspires is in the special charge of the Redemptorist order of priests. You can see a picture of the icon and read about its history, miracles and symbolism at their website at http://www.iconoflove.org/.

Although anyone can make a private novena at any time, the Church teaches that there is added efficacy in the union of the faithful at prayer. Holding this public novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a St. Louise tradition, sponsored by the Fil-Am community. The dates for the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help: May 23 livestream at 10AM; May 30 , June 6, 13, 20, 27 in the chapel at 10AM. Novenas will be livestreamed if we can-not yet gather publicly on these dates.
