Welcome to worship at Vinje Lutheran Church. We want you to know that
you are very welcome here. We want this to be a safe place, where we can bring our best and our worst, our peace and our pain. This is a place of
healing and reconciliation.
And now let us stand as we are able, to confess our brokenness and to hear God’s word of forgiveness.
Confession and Forgiveness
All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
In the name of God the Father of glory;
in the name of God the ☩ Son, our Redeemer;
in the name of God the holy and life-giving Spirit.
Amen.
The Sun of righteousness shall rise with shining beams of healing.
Let us gather under the wings of God’s mercy.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Gracious God,
we acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins—
those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you.
We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in you everything is revealed.
Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage of guilt;
and work in us that which is pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
3
With a heart full of mercy and compassion,
God saves us and ☩ forgives us all our sins.
Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us and by the light of the Holy Spirit
guides our feet into the way of peace. Amen.

WORD
Scripture Reading Colossians 1:11-20 Bible, pg. 956
An early Christian hymn praises the mystery of the political, personal, and mystical Christ, the one who was present at creation and is eternally
reigning with God.
11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious
power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the
inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom
we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have
been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he
5
is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have
first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia Hymnal #170
Holy Gospel Luke 23:33-43 Bible, pg. 859
Amid scoffing and slander from those who sarcastically call him Messiah and king, Jesus reveals that to be Messiah and king is to give one’s life for
others. Here he uses his power to welcome a despised sinner to paradise but puts his own death into God’s hands.
The Holy Gospel, according to Luke, the first chapter:
Glory to you, O Lord
33When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus
there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34⟦Then Jesus
said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”⟧ And
they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35And the people stood by, watching;
but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save
himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” 36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37and saying, “If you
are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”
39One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40But the other
rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed have been condemned justly,
6
for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done
nothing wrong.” 42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in
Paradise.”
The Gospel of our Lord:
Praise to you, O Christ

The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song
Hymn of the Day Will You Let Me Be Your Servant Hymnal #659
1 Will you let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant, too.
2 We are pilgrims on a journey, we are trav'lers on the road;
we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.
3 I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.
4 I will weep when you are weeping;
when you laugh I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow
till we've seen this journey through.
5 Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

Apostles’ Creed Hymnal pg. 105
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offering Prayer
Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread,
so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom,
for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
Words of Institution
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take and eat; this is
my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
Share in the inheritance of all the saints.
Come to the table prepared for you.

Sending Song Blessed Be Your Name
Blessed be Your name
In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be Your name When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me When the world's all as it should be
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be Your name On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name
14
Every blessing You pour out I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name
You give and take away
You give and take away My heart will choose to say
Lord blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name
