About EOU’s:The Export Oriented Units (EOUs) scheme, introduced in early 1981, is complementary to the

SEZ scheme. It adopts the same production regime but offers a wide option in locations with

reference to factors like source of raw materials, ports of export, hinterland facilities, availability

of technological skills, existence of an industrial base and the need for a larger area of land for

the project. As on 31st December 2005, 1924 units are in operation under the EOU scheme.

Objectives of the Export oriented unit:  

The main objectives of the EOU scheme is to increase exports, earn foreign exchange to the

country, transfer of latest technologies stimulate direct foreign investment and to generate

additional employment.

EOU Activities

Initially, EOUs were mainly concentrated in Textiles and Yarn, Food Processing, Electronics,

Chemicals, Plastics, Granites and Minerals/Ores. But now a day, EOU has extended it area of

work which includes functions like manufacturing, servicing, development of software, trading,

repair, remaking, reconditioning, re-engineering including making of gold/silver/platinum

jewellery and articles thereof, agriculture including agro-processing, aquaculture, animal

husbandry, bio-technology, floriculture, horticulture, pisiculture, viticulture, poultry, sericulture

and granites.The Export Oriented Units (EOUs) scheme, introduced in early 1981, is

Surana entered in the field of steel by trading business from 1986-1994. On 12 th march 1991;

"surana metals & steels (India) limited" was incorporated as a public limited company. Since

1991, the Surana Group has been focusing on creation of high standards in their production

fields. The company is headquartered in Chennai, India.

In 2000, Surana Added A Power Wing, for its captive Consumption, Utilizing (Non

Steel Trading

True to its multi-faceted nature, Surana Corporation Limited is also actively involved in Steel

Trading and deals with a wide range of steel products. The company has its own steel-trading

unit complete with a stockyard and infrastructure facilities.

The major items that the company deals and trades in are:

Cold twisted deformed bars

Mild steel angles

Mild steel structurals

Mild steel slit coils

Mild steel rounds

The above-mentioned steel products are sold to various builders and contractors involved in

construction activities.

Bullion Trading

With a desire to constantly reinvent and succeed, Surana Corporation forayed in the fold

import markets and has today, become the second largest importer of Gold Bullion in India

with a market share in the gold imports of around 7% per annum. The company imports

Gold Bullion, through canalized agencies like State Trading Corporation, MMTC, PEC ltd and

Handicrafts and Handlooms Exports Corporation etc., which is sold to jewellery manufacturers

all across Tamilnadu and its adjacent states.On an average, the company imports around 50MTs

of gold per annum, which in terms of value is an astounding Rs.3000 crores per annum.

Surana Corporation Limited is also actively involved in bullion Trading and deals with a wide

sizes of bullion bars. The company has its own trading unit complete with a stock and

infrastructure facilities. The gold bullion are sold to various retail jewelers and manufactures

involved in gold activities.

Since the company has established itself as an Export House and has embarked upon an

ambitious expansion project, it expects its gold jewellery manufacturing and Gold Bullion

activities to increase substantially in the coming years

Steel Manufacturing

Surana Industries Limited possesses a fully integrated state-of-the-art steel manufacturing plant

at Gummidipoondi, Chennai. The unit is complete with the following facilities:

Induction Furnace for the manufacturing of Mild Steel Ingots from Heavy Metal Scrap

Steel plant for rolled products from Mild Steel Ingots and Billets (from 6mm to 36mm

diameter)

Hot rolled products like cold Twisted Deformed (CTD) bars, TOR Steel, Thermo-

Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars (known as Surana TMT), Mild Steel Wires, MS

Structurals and Angels etc.

Cold Rolled Items

Surana Industries manufactures High Strength Deformed Steel bars (approved by Bureau of

Indian Standards association), Thermo Mechanically treated bars known as SURANA TMT,

CRS Reinforcing bars, Cold Twisted Deformed bars, Mild Steel Rounds and Mild Steel

Structurals. The plant has an installed capacity to produce per annum 30,000 tonnes of mild steel

ingots, and 1,09,800 tonnes of CTD bars and TMT bars.

During 1970 - 85, Surana Was In The Business of Metal & Finance.

Surana Brothers

Moving from his native place, Merta City, Rajasthan,Mr. G.R Surana (GRS), a matriculate,

now 54, settled in Kollidam, Tamilnadu and started his career along with next younger brother

Mr. Shantilal Surana in jewellery trade business in the beginning of nineteen seventies. It had a

humble start. Honesty was their main stay. Their venture gained popularity in that

predominantly agricultural region, as profit being not the only motive. In eighties, they could

plan to divert into hire purchase and lease business.

It is Mr.GRS who saw opportunities in auto business and hence was instrumental for expanding

into Hire Purchase and lease finance, for both two and four wheelers, which prospered rather

decently. Under his control, company received "the best customer satisfaction award" and

“the best service and management" award issued by two academies in Chennai for the year

1991-1992. A leading member of the lions club and several social organizations of India, Mr.

GRS continues to be the chairman of the surana group from inception, mainly concentrating on

the market trends and products selection and he acts as the guiding factor.

Mr. Shantilal Surana (SLS) a matriculate, now 52, shifting from his native place in Rajasthan,

moved to Kollidam in 1970 more as assistant to his elder brother. Both brothers were gaining

foothold in their jewellery business and hire purchase business. They were looking for greener

pastures and decided to shift activities to chennai, the growing capital of Tamilnadu. On

analyzing the market at Chennai Mr. Shantilal Surana decided to step in the trade of steel. Hence,

their business of jewellery, HP and leasing took center at chennai, ably assisted by their younger

brothers Mr. Vijayraj Surana (VRS) and Mr. Dineshchand Surana (DCS), both bringing with

them more business acumen.

With the main aim of developing the steel arm and Mr. SLS started looking after the Putting up

of a steel plant at Gummidipoondi in SIPCOT complex, Mr. DCS taking care of sales and

collection. The practical experience of Mr.SLS in steel trade added more strength in setting up

the steel manufacturing unit. Under his management, the company received “Certificate of

Excellence" for highest lifting of semis in southern region for the year 1997-98, an award by

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. With knowledge of commercial steel

production experience and expertise in making made-to-order designs and crafted to suit the

demands of customers in the market, Mr. SLS, presently the M.D of Surana Corporation Limited

(SCL) is heading the production side of gold jewellery manufacture and retail outlet.

Modernization:

Surana Industries Limited is one of the major TMT (thermo mechanically treated) bars

manufacturer located in Chennai and sourced Eurotherm DEL India Limited to modernize their

plant located at Gummidipoondi around 45KM from Chennai. The infrastructure advantage of

Surana's fully integrated steel manufacturing plant is complete with Programmable Logic

Controllers (PLC), where in the entire process is fully computerized. The means, the operations

are faster and predictably accurate. Being the only plant in the private sector in Southern India,

Surana offers a good value addition to the industry by studying and employing global trends in

TMT processes.

Proposed Plan:Proposed Special Steel Manufacturing (Integrated Steel Plant):

 

Setting up integrated steel plant for the manufacturing of special steel meant exclusively for

automobile sector. As iron ore is the basic raw material for the unit, the company has approached

Govt. of Karnataka for the allocation of an iron ore mine.

GoK has indicated that the mine would be allotted subject to setting up the plant in Karnataka.

GoK has allotted 300 acres of land in Raichur. GoK has considered the application & the mines

allotment orders are expected at any moments based on progress of project work at Raichur site.
