SUSQUEHANNA RIVER BRIDGE - Harrisburg, Pennsylvania The new Susquehanna River Bridges are signature structures for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the first vehicular concrete segmental bridges to be built in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition to crossing the Susquehanna River, the new bridges span the Norfolk Southern Railroad, Amtrak, the Steelton-Highspire Railroad, State Route 230, and Calver Island. OUR ROLE McNary Bergeron & Associates provided: - Modifications and standardization to segment details - Step-by-step erection procedures - Construction analyses in support of contractor proposed erection methods - Independent review of specialized erection truss -Design and details of lifting & handling equipment, erection truss supports, and various other temporary works CONSTRUCTION METHOD AND SPECIFICATIONS - Span-by-span precast segmental construction - Specialized self-launching underslung erection truss made by DEAL in Italy - Twin concrete box girders, each 5,910' long x 57' wide - 40 spans on each bridge, typically 150' long - 1,040 precast concrete segments cast in a facility set up adjacent to the project OWNER Pennsylvania Turnpike CONTRACTOR Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc. / G.A. & F.C.
