Becoming a parent can be a won-derful, albeit nervewracking, experi-ence. With so many unknowns beforeyou, the challenges of raising a childcan seem insurmountable. Yet despitenot having a handbook for raising kids, parents tend to make it through theinfant and toddler stages of their chil-dren's lives with healthy kids in tow.

Although there are many lessonsnew parents must learn, none are moreimportant than keeping a child safe. The Home SafetyCouncil reports thatmore than 2,000 children die eachyear as a result of unintentional homeinjury. The highest rates are amongba-bies under a year old. It's never tooearly to make safety a priority. Beforebaby arrives, parents can learn aboutthe things around their house that maypose a threat to young children andthen make any necessary adjustmentsto ensure their homes are safe havensfor youngsters.

Sleep environmentOne of the first safety concerns par-

ents will face is the sleeping environ-ment. Infants spend lots of time asleepin the first monthsof their lives, and howand where they sleep is important.

The best defense against suddeninfant death syndrome, or SIDS, is toplace infants on their backs when put-ting them to sleep. Although it's tempt-ing to cover the baby with a fluffy blan-ket or surround the child with plush toys, these items increase the risk of impededairflow. While the cause of SIDSremains a topic of debate, many doc-tors believe it has something to do witha young child's inability to awakenwhen faced with diminished oxygenlevels. Crib bumpers, loose blankets

and pajamas, as well as sleepinor her stomach, can increase arisk for SIDS.

Never leave a child unattended in oraround water -- even for a second. Thisis the best way to prevent a water-relat-ed tragedy.

Cleaning agentsMedicines may be kept out of reach,

but household cleaners must also beinaccessible to children. Use cabinetlocks to prevent curious little hands fromgaining access to potentially harmful

cleaners.Although parents may lock their cab-inets, they may not impede access to thedishwasher. A dishwasher is a hiddenhazard. Dishwashers provide children

access to potentially caustic detergentand other chemicals, and kids can beinjured by sharp knives and breakableglass inside the dishwasher. When yourwork in the kitchen is done for the night, use gates to prevent curious kids fromwandering into the area.

Hand-me downsIn an effort to save money, many

    parents will accept hand-me-down items

from well-meaning relatives. Used toysor babyequipment may not conform tocurrent safety guidelines. Some may bemissing parts or have been part of apast recall. Inspect all secondhand

items to verify they are safe beforeusing. Also, parents can visitwww.cpsc.gov to check if the item meetscurrentsafety standards.

Keeping children safe requires a life-

time of diligence and awarepotential hazards. Making changes around the house can tle ones happy and healthy.

    Keep your little ones safe

The best defense against sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, is to place intheir backs when putting them to sleep.

    County residents save throughrecycling program

County Executive Paul Farrowannounced today that Waukesha Countyresidents in participating communities willsave $5 million per year as a result of cooperating on recycling and refuse col-lection contracts.

Earlier this year, Waukesha County con-verted to a single-sort recycling system withall recyclables going into one larger con-tainer, mixed together, making participation

easier. Providing residents with largerrecycling containers, automating collectionand expanding the acceptable materialsfor recycling has resulted in reduced collec-tion costs. Also, diverting the additionalmaterials for recycling saves taxpayers sig-nificant cost on landfill disposal.

“Recycling is not only good for theenvironment, it also saves tax dollars,” saidCounty Executive Paul Farrow. “This suc-cessful partnership with many municipali-ties in Waukesha County, will save taxpay-ers $5 million per year.”

In addition to savings from the collabo-ration on recycling and refuse collectioncontracts, participating municipalitiesreceive dividends on the recyclable materi-als revenue. Annually, recycling partners

receive a portion of $1 million in dividendswith $13.6 million in tax relief since 2001.

The Washington County HumaneSociety’s yearly community-favorite eventPaws in the Park (formerly called Walk forthe Animals) will be held at Jackson Park inthe village of Jackson Sept. 12.

All animal lovers, with or without a pet,are invited to participate in the 1.5- or 2.5-mile walk which has been revamped this

year, said WCHS community relationscoordinator Debbie Block."We’re mixing it up quite a bit and it is

going to be so much fun," she said. "Therewill be live music by Vinyl Road, plenty of food, lots of vendors. It will be a greattime."

The event’s new logo, which uses apaw for the "A" in "Paws," came from aUniversity of Waukesha student who wona Humane Society contest. Part of themotivation behind the name change,Block said, was to bring a new energy tothe walk and garner more attention forthe cause.

"This walk supports our mission at theHumane Society," she said. "It aids our pro-grams and helps us continue educatingchildren which is something we do a lotof."

Block explained how most peopledon’t realize how involved the HumaneSociety is in informing area children, through school programs and tours, aboutthe responsibility of a pet.

"We talk about what makes a goodpet, how to care for animals, what it’s liketo have a career in the animal field," shesaid. "This event really supports that."

While dogs are the most commonlyfeatured four-legged participants, the eventdraws a whole array of beloved creatures.

"Rabbits, turtles, cats, you name it,"said Block. "If I wasn’t working the event Iwould bring my own reptiles. It gets a littlecrazy, but it’s fun."

The event is open to individuals, fami-lies and corporate teams. There are fourlevels of sponsorship for those who want to

raise funds--Bronze Paw ($100); Silver Paw($300); Gold Paw ($500); and PlatinumPaw ($750). The top adult in pledges willreceive a $200 Visa gift card and the sec-ond place adult will get $100. Prizes willbe awarded to third, fourth and fifth placesas well. There will also be youth pledgeopportunities. The first place youth will wina Tablet and second place a $50 gift card.To qualify for the top two slots, adults mustraise a minimum of $400 and youth a min-imum of $200. After the walk, the shelterwill honor the top walkers who brought inthe most pledges.

Registration fees for the event by Sept.5 are $15 for students 12 and under ($20the day of event); $25 for individuals($30); $50 for a family of four ($60), $10for additional family member; and $75 fora corporate team ($90), $10 for addition-al team member. Fees include one T-shirtper participant and a goodie bag. All ani-mals will receive a bandana.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and thewalk starts at 10 a.m. Water will be pro-vided along both routes.

For more information, one can callBlock at (262) 677-4388 or [email protected].
