In a ballroom filled almost exclusivelywith women, a spirit of strength and cama-raderie dominated as eight breast cancersurvivors strutted a catwalk Oct. 17 for afundraiser to benefit the Breast Center at atFroedtert & the Medical College ofWisconsin Community Memorial Hospital inMenomonee Falls.
In honor of Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth, the Community MemorialFoundation’s luncheon and fashion show atthe Hilton Garden Inn in Milwaukee put anew spin on an annual event, said theFoundation’s special events coordinatorDonna Roesch.
“We’ve done this type of event in thepast, but this year we decided to make itabout women’s issues–we are celebratingbreast cancer survivors and the message ofthis month,” she said. “We want people totake charge of their health, and we wanteveryone to know that we offer all thosepreventative services and treatment atCMH. It is about getting well and stayingwell.”
The eight models–Kathleen Binder; AmyDethloff; Susan Eggleston; Ann Finnessey;
Karen Gersonde; Dawn Hinton; SandyPolyak; and Mary Stauffacher–who starredin the fashion show portion of the eventreceived their treatment at the Cancer CareCenter at CMH.
“All of our models are breast cancer sur-
vivors who have agreed to come andinspire us,” said guest emcee RuthGraczkowski. “This disease affects every-one and we are here to band together withfamily, friends and neighbors to say, ‘This isnot acceptable.’ Your courage and strengthis inspiring and we are here to honor youon this journey. We are all here to supportyou.”
Featuring clothing and accessories byRobin’s Nest, shoes by Designer Show
Warehouse and furs by A.J. Ugent Furs, thefashion show included three sets of looks.“This is fun and a privilege,” said
Finnessey as she prepared to take thestage. “It’s exciting to be able to do some-thing like this and it’s always great to bearound other survivors. It is being part of atrue sisterhood; we all know how the othersfeel.”
The event came together with assistancefrom many facets of the community, includ-ing volunteer Yinka Olapo who works withthe American Cancer Society’s “LookGood, Feel Good” program offered to can-cer patients at CMH.
“Today I helped with the models, touch-ing up their makeup and hair, and I just loveit,” she said. “Anytime you can give back tothe community is a true blessing.”
Kerry Freiberg, executive director of theFoundation, called the event a “life-affirm-ing occasion.”
She told the story of Patricia, her child-hood friend’s mother who was diagnosedwith breast cancer three decades ago.
“It was a devastat-ing diagnosis, yetPatricia said, ‘I amgoing to treat this’ andshe underwent a mas-tectomy and radia-tion,” Freiberg said.
Freiberg went onto share that Patriciahad died earlier thatweek–but not from
breast cancer.“She was 95 yearsold and lived a longand beautiful life,”Freiberg stated.“While we are sad tohave lost her, she tri-umphed over breastcancer...and I inviteyou to join us atCommunity Memorialin our dream thatsomeday breast can-cer will be behind us.”
Patricia Petry,Women’s Service LineDirector with CMH, spoke on the awardsand accreditations the Breast Center–locat-ed at the second floor of the Women’s
Center at CMH–has earned since openingin 2003.“I just want everyone to know that we
are pretty good!” she said.
The event also included a silenand raffle bidding.

When Menomonee Falls residentKathleen Binder was diagnosed with Stage3 breast cancer in October 2012, she wasnot entirely surprised.
“My mother passed away from breast
cancer in 2001 so I had an idea it was apossibility,” she said. “But still, it was some-thing I did not want to accept.”
The now-56-year-old first noticed some-thing was awry in September 2012, eventhough her mammogram that February hadbeen fine. She waited a month to go getthings checked out–an approach she doesnot recommend.
“I would highly advise against spend-ing a month not knowing what’s going onwith your body,” she said.
Once diagnosed that November,Binder–who received treatment at theBreast Center of Community MemorialHospital–began an arduous journey ofchemotherapy that went on for more thansix months.
“That was very hard because I was stillworking,” said Binder, who continues towork out of Froedtert Health’s WoodlandPrime billing office in the village.
In June 2013 Binder underwent a dou-ble mastectomy and began a lighter courseof chemotherapy that lasted for a year. InMay 2014, she began the reconstructionprocess and she continues with physicaltherapy to avoid further lymphedema, fluidretention that has affected her armsbecause of the surgery.
“Since (the surgery) I have been good, very good!” she said. “I feel like I have got-ten the majority of my strength back and I amhappy with the results of the reconstruction.”
She is also, finally, able to take a
proverbial deep breath.“My oncologist said I am cured–not in
remission, cured,” she said. “He said this isbecause I was in Stage 3. In Stage 4 youare always in remission.”
Binder, who is a born-again Christian, said she had to rely on her faith and thekindness of family and friends during this
trying time.“This has strengthened my faith and my
trust in God and has made me a happierperson overall,” she said. “I am single so inthe beginning I was worried about whowould help me out, but my friends andchurch (Crossway in Germantown) werethere for me. They were so encouraging.”
She especially credits her friend JanetKenny and sister Karen Passailaigue, whocame from California to live with Binder fora few months.
“They were a huge help in my recoveryprocess,” said Binder.
Being asked to participate in theCommunity Memorial Foundation’s fashionshow for Breast Cancer Awareness Monthwas a pleasant surprise.
“I love clothes and I love dressing up,”she said. “This is such a perfect fun eventand it is one of the first really great things tocome out of (my battle against cancer). Iam so happy they are honoring the gals!”
Binder said it has been a “tough road,”but she always felt safe knowing she was in“God’s hands” while “receiving excellentcare from every doctor, nurse and caregiv-er at Froedtert, mostly through CommunityMemorial Hospital.”
She advises other women who may befacing the same unknown she was to go seetheir doctor today, not tomorrow.
“If you suspect something is wrong, don’t wait a week, go in immediately,” shesaid.

By Ronda AddyBelts and hoses are important compo-
nents in your vehicle. If something goeswrong with them, you will have problems.By paying attention to the belts and hoses, you can help keep your vehicle running itsbest. You don't need to hire a professionalto check your belts and hoses. You can doit yourself. You just need to make sure theengine is cold.
Belts operate the alternator, powersteering pump, water pump and air condi-tioner compressor. It is important to startwith a visual inspection of the belts and atesting of the tension. Look for cracking, fraying or missing pieces, all of which war-rant a replacement. To get an accuratereading of a belt's tension, you need a belttension gauge. If you don't have one ofthese, you can check the tension bydepressing the belt along its longest straightsection. If it deflects one-half to one inch, the tension is good.
There are various types of belts. Here isa brief description of some of them, alongwith some maintenance tips: The drive beltor fan belt powers the power steeringpump, air injection pump, air conditioningcompressor and mechanical cooling fan. There are two types: the V-belt and the ser-pentine belt. The belts should be checkedwhen the oil is changed. Look for signs ofcracking (random cracks on the ribs of aserpentine belt are normal and don'trequire an immediate replacement), missingpieces, splitting or separating layers. Thetiming belt keeps the crankshaft andcamshaft synchronized, which, in turn, keeps the valve operation matched to theposition of the pistons. There are someengines in which the belt operates otherparts, such as the water and oil pump andbalance shafts. For this, manufacturers usu-ally have a recommended mileage forreplacement. Failure to follow this recom-mendation could result in major enginedamage. Because it is easier to access thewater pump, tensioning pulleys and timingbelt sprockets when the timing belt isremoved, you may want to consider replac-ing these parts as well.
After checking the belts, you may checkthe hoses-the radiator hoses (upper andlower), heater hose and bypass hose. Lookfor small leaks, and if you find some, useduct tape as a temporary patch. If you
notice the upper radiator hose has col-lapsed, you have a defective radiator pres-sure cap that will need to be replaced. Testthe heater and radiator hoses by firmlysqueezing them. If they are hard, make acrunching sound, are extremely soft orsticky, or are covered with oil, they need tobe replaced.
You should check the coolant hosestwice a year, in the spring and fall. You alsoneed to check the hose connections, butonly when the engine is warm. Drive thevehicle around for a while and then pop thehood. If you see swollen spots in thecoolant hoses, this indicates areas of weak-ness and the hoses need to be replaced. You should also check for cold leaks. Thesegenerally seal themselves when the hosesget warm and expand, so wait until theengine has cooled and look for dry coolantcracks or small damp spots down the radi-ator, thermostat housing, hose ends or fire-wall.

By Tresa EricksonMost of us know that regular main-
tenance is key to a well-running vehi-cle. That's why we get our oilchanged, have our tires rotated and soforth. Another important part of theregular maintenance schedule is thetune-up. Because the internal workingsof vehicles have changed so muchover the years, the definition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replace-ment of spark plugs to the completeoverhaul of several areas within thevehicle.
Most experts agree that the besttune-ups involve an inspection of sev-eral areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain con-trol, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not
every shop defines a tune-up in thisway, however. Generally, the moreinvolved the tune-up, the more it costs.
When scheduling a tune-up, it isimportant that you find out what it willentail and how much it will cost. Bewary of really low estimates; chancesare the shop is pushing for your busi-ness and the final bill for the tune-up
will be much higher. The best shops understand

A long way from a ModeBy Ronda AddyIn 1903, Ford introduced one of the
first mass-produced family vehicles, theModel A. With a top speed of 45 mph,the Model A came in a two- and four-seater model with a three-speed trans-mission. The available options were aroof (rubber for $30 or leather for $50),a rear door and a rear tonneau, the rearcompartment containing two seats forpassengers. To top everything off, theModel A came from the factory only inred.

impending collisions or veering off theroad. The monitor works by using either acamera to detect lane markers whenmonitoring a driver's ability to stay intheir lane or infrared cameras to detecteye motions and compute the driver'strends. Drivers are kept alert, which helpskeep them and others on the road safe.
The all-weather/night vision or visionenhancement system provides driverswith information about objects in a vehi-cle's path that cannot normally be seenat night or under adverse conditions.Through radar, infrared lights or a receiv-er in front of the vehicle, data is fed into
a computer that processes the informa-tion and then creates a displayed imagein front of the driver. Data gathered fromradar or infrared receivers mounted onthe front of a vehicle is processed, and ifsomething is detected, an image is dis-played in front of the driver. Safety ismuch improved during adverse or night-time conditions.
Other special features either currently
available or possibly coming in the futureinclude: Advanced (smart) restraint sys-tems Anti-submarine seats Electronic tollcollection Electronic message centerGlobal window opening and closingMemory profile system Side vision aid orblind-spot detection system Remote light-ing system Reverse and parking aidTheater lighting/illuminated entryVehicle Emergency Messaging System(VEMS)
While this technology sounds likemajor leaps forward, someday it too willbe outdated and future drivers will bethinking how could those people possiblyget by without such and such.

By Tresa EricksonEvery fall homeowners across the country pull
out their ladders, buckets and scoops and preparefor the arduous chore of cleaning out their gutters.Gutters are essential for directing water away fromthe home and must be free of debris in order to dotheir job eff ectively. Leaves, acorns, pine needles andmore can fill gutters quickly in the fall and lead tomajor issues later. Getting up on a ladder and scoop-ing out debris from gutters is not an easy task. It isquite the hassle, in fact, so much so that many home-owners have opted for a gutter guard system.
There are hundreds of gutter guard systems on
the market. Some you can install yourself. Othersrequire the skills of a professional to install. Cost isbased on a number of factors, including materials.
Gutter guard systems come in a variety of mate-rials. Some of the most common include copper, alu-minum, plastic, mesh and foam. There are advan-tages and disadvantages to each. Copper is expen-sive and difficult to install, but it w ill not rust. It must besealed periodically to prevent it from turning green.Aluminum costs less than copper and is durable, butit can be diff icult to install. Plastic is also durable, eas-ier to install and will not rust. It can crack, however, especially in cold temperatures. Mesh and foamwork best as filters in gutter systems. They are inex-pensive, easy to install and allow for better waterflow all around, but they tend to get clogged quickly.
Most gutter guard systems come in two designs:screens or covers. Screens act as filters, allowing formore water to run through gutters while keeping outlarge debris. They are usually made from aluminum, foam or nylon or metal mesh. Perched inside of gut-ters, screens are hidden from view. They are the leastexpensive of the two designs and the easiest toinstall. They are not nearly as durable as covers, how-ever. Covers are usually made from metal or plasticand sit on top of gutters within view. Larger thanscreens, they can be difficult to install. Covers keepdebris out of gutters but do not allow as much waterto pass through as screens do.
As with any home improvement, you should doyour homework when selecting a gutter guard system.Find out what is available in your area and what willwork best for your budget and know-how. If you decideto go with a professional, review the options carefullyand find out if annual inspections are included in thepackages presented. If not, be prepared to do theinspections yourself. If you decide to install a systemyourself, take the necessary precautions. Get a buddyto help you and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
The whole point of as gutter guard system is tokeep debris out of gutters and homeowners safe onthe ground. Hundreds of injuries occur every yearfrom annual gutter cleanings. Don’t let it happen toyou. Consider investing in the safer alternative of agutter guard system.
A safer alternative
