Veterans Day has taken on a newmeaning for many Americans sinceSeptember 11 and the beginning of theconflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Onlya few years ago, many Americans didnot know an individual who had beenin active combat duty in the last 20years. After the Vietnam War, the mili-tary became much less valued and muchless popular in the mainstream culture, but, today, all veterans are honored fortheir service on Veterans Day.
The first Armistice Day celebrationtook place in 1919 and marked the firstanniversary of the Armistice. Thirtystates made it a legal holiday andPresident Woodrow Wilson led the fes-

lost in war, and laying flowers orremembering soldiers that you haveknown is a good option. While there areactive service men and women in thefield, you might consider sending a carepackage or just a thank-you card to asoldier. You can even discuss the histo-ry of the holiday and American military
involvement with your children. Most holidays in the United States
have been moved to Mondays to createa long weekend. The same was done forVeterans Day, but veterans groupsprotested and it was moved back to thetraditional date of November 11. Most
groups thought it would raise the pro-file of the holiday, but it has, in fact, had the opposite effect. While morepeople are observing the holiday inrecent years, most businesses do notclose for the day. Only governmentoffices and banks are closed. Officialceremonies center on the Tomb of theUnknowns in Arlington NationalCemetery in Washington, D.C. A colorguard from all branches of the militarypatrols the site through the night, apresidential wreath is laid and Taps isplayed over the grave.
Veterans Day is both a state and afederal holiday in all states. It coincides
with international celebrations of Armistice Day and Remembrance Day inother parts of the world. The holiday isobserved on November 11 becausemajor hostilities in World War I wereended formally at 11 a.m. on the 11thday of November, the 11th month, in1918 when Germany signed theArmistice at the Versailles Palace inParis. Veterans Day has a different focusthan Memorial Day, as Veterans Day isintended to honor and thank the livingveterans in the United States for theirservice and to acknowledge their contri-butions to American society.

Menomonee Falls School DistrictSuperintendent Patricia Greco hasexpressed support for a proposed billthat would allow local public schooldistricts to begin school prior to Sept.1 under certain conditions.
State law requires that publicschools cannot begin the yearbeforeSept. 1. Assembly Bill 114 wouldallow an exemption for high schools indistricts where at least 20 percent of students take at least one AdvancedPlacement course. Advance Placementcourses are college-level courses
offered at the high school level.Students who score well on the examswith the courses can attain college-level credit.
Reps. Dan Knodl (R-Germantown)and Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) areamong the sponsors of the bill, whileSen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) isamong the cosponsors the the legisla-tion.
In a Nov. 4 letter to legisotors,Greco said the Menomonee Falls dis-trict meets the 20 percent figure estab-lished in the bill and explained why an
early start would benefit districts withstudents in the Advanced Placementcourses.
"Advanced Placement requires stu-dents to begin testing on nationallymandated dates beginning in earlyMay. States across the nation beginschool in August affording their stu-dents typically three weeks of addi-tional instructional time prior to thestart of the testing window. AdvancedPlacement performance is a direct linkto college coursework placement andearning college credit. Our students,
and all students in Wisconsin, apromised by the current state sGreco said. MANAGING EDITORThe Germantown boys cross country team finished12th in Division I competition at the state cross coun-try meet held in Wisconsin Rapids Oct. 31.
Germantown was led by Craig Reese, who finin-ished 42nd in team competition and 65th overall witha time of 17:06.64. He was followed by teammatesJacob DuFrane (45th team, 68th overall, 17:07.01),Jake Garvey (53rd team,83rd overall,17:14.01), DylanAyer (68th team, 101st overall, 17:21.74) and EvanAdair (102nd team, 149th overall, 17:48.67). Alsorunning for Germantown were Westin Feltz (129thteam, 179th overall, 18:18.06) and Joe Biesel (130thteam, 180th overall, 18:18.13).
"Coming to the state meet to compete is the bigtakeaway we can come from here. It's not like anyother race we've run this season," Germantown boyscross country Coach Harris Jones said.
The meet was run in a steady rain that continued
through the second last race of the day, the Division2 boys race. The rain had ended by the time theDivision I boys race started, but the course was stillwet.
Jones added the downhill portion of the courseafter the second mile was "pretty rough" but the teamtalked through race strategy and were aware of it.
"I think they responded well as best we could withthe way they tried to position themselves," Jonessaid.
Jones said that only two members of the team pre-viously raced on the course, and that was a few yearsago.
"Just a very new experience for a lot of our racersand especially new experience at a meet as competi-tive as this," Jones said.
Jones said he was hoping for a better result "butultimately we made it here to state and we're looking
to the future to obviously be back here. Take this as alearning experience and take the positives we canfrom it."
The Germantown girls team finished 14th in theDivision I race. Germantown was led by Sami Stieve, who finished 43rd in the team competition and 64thoverall with a time of 19:59.16. She was followed byAlyssa Goesch (50th team, 75th overall, 20:10.94),Jennifer Lindgren (59th team, 99th overall,20:32.86), Calli Lemke (68th team, 109th overall,20:43.09) and McKenna Klopfer (96th team, 144thoverall, 21:02.82). Also running for Germantown wereMolly Baus (131st team, 181st overall, 22:09.14) andLydia Boyd (134st team, 184th overall, 22:19.57.)
Among individual runners, Rachel Jeffers of Hamilton finished 31st in the Division I giris race with
a time of 19.42.44 while Kylee
Wunschel of Menomonee Fallsfinished 35th with a time of 19.44.66. In the boys Division Irace, Michael Swope of Hamilton finished 70th with atime of 17:08.82.
"It was really fast, it was sofast," Wunschel said a shorttime after the race was com-pleted.
Wunschel said she waspleased with the result.
"I did not think I was goingto be here (at the start of theseason) but I'm glad I'm here.It was a crazy experience,"she said.
Menomonee Falls Coach TomShannon praised Wunschel for
her showing at the meet."The rain conditions did
affect all the runners becausethe course was very wet butKylee handled it very well. Itaffected warm-ups because youwant to keep dry but she ranan outstanding race. It was agutsy performance on a dismalday weather wise," Shannonsaid. "For a first timer at themeet, she ran outstanding. Itwas one of her better times of the year on arguably thetoughest course we've run on.She should be happy and proudof her achievements."
Hamilton Coach Stephen
Schmidt praised his runners. He said Jeffers "ran very smart. She met our expectations notbecause of finishing 31st, butbecause of how she finished31st place overall. She was78th place at the mile, 55th place at the two mile, andfinished 31st. That type of forward movement reallyindicates that she was feeling very strong, and run-ning very smart. This was Rachel's first trip to state,so to finish 31st is quite a feat."
Schmidt said Swope improved from his start in therace.
"He ran confidently, and moved through the fieldvery effectively. He was 188th at the 1 mile, 105th atthe 2 mile, and finished 70th overall. As a sophomore,
in his first state meet, to be in 188th place at tand not freak out says a lot about his mentalness. He has a lot if determination, and pose, all the tools to be an elite runner in thisSchmidt said of Swope.
In the Division 2 girls race, Catherine MKettle Moraine Lutheran finished 42nd with a20:24.94.
In the Division 2 boys race, Ryan Gurgel oMoraine Lutheran finished 89th with a t17:54.97.

PHOTO BY THOMAS J. MCKILLENGermantown's Max Keefe records a dig against Arrowhead in a sectional semifinal Nov. 3.
History did not repeat itself duringa Division I boys volleyball sectionalsemi-final at Germantown High SchoolNov. 3, as Germantown rallied to closeout a fourth game and defeatArrowhead, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 26-24.
"It was pretty much what weexpected out of it.They were going tocome in, serve as aggressive as anyother high school team, if not moreaggressive than every other team,"Germantown Coach Brian Rushmer saidof Arrowhead afterward. "They live and
die by it, they almost had us. It's pret-ty much what we expected."
Germantown held the leadthroughout the first game and held a21-16 lead following a kill by LoganReindl. While Arrowhead got with inthree points, an Arrowhead serve intothe net closed the game forGermantown.
In the second game Germantownopened up a 9-2 lead following a kill byBryce Thomas and lead 17-9 following akill by Max Keefe. But Arrowheadscored the next four points and trailed22-19 after an attempted Germantownkill went into the net. But Germantownscored the next two points and closedthe second game on an ace.
Arrowhead rallied in the thirdgame. After the teams were tied 21-21,Arrowhead scored the next two pointsto lead 23-21. A Keefe kill made thescore close, but Arrowhead finished off the game to keep their season alive.
Arrowhead then held a leadthroughout the fourth game, asGermantown kept playing catch up.Arrowhead took a 24-21 lead on a killby Riley Voss but the next Arrowheadserve went into the net. Germatownthen scored the next three points toclose the set and advance to a section-al final matchup against North ShoreConference rival Nicolet at Homestead
High School Nov. 5."One point is pretty big when you
get to this point in the season,"Arrowhead Coach Shane Reid saidafterward.
Rushmer said he was confident histeam could rally to close out of thefourth game.
"At this point in time our guys arecalm when the score is anything --could be 0-0 or 24-24, we're still goingto play the same," Rushmer said.
Keefe sparked the Germantown run
in the fourth game, scoring fourstraight points for Germantown to keepthe team in the game while leadingGermantown with 26 kills for thematch. Rushmer noted that before thefourth game other Germantown coach-es heard Keefe go to Reindl and askedto "feed me" the ball.
"That's the first time all year any-body has really told Logan they wantthe ball, they need the ball. That'sawesome," Rushmer said.
The victory by Germantown was areversal of last year, when Arrowheadupset Germantown in sectional semifi-nal. Rushmer said both teams are dif-ferent from the seasons but he did notethat when Arrowhead beat Cedarburg
on Oct. 30 members of last year's teamsaw the sectional semifinal matchup asa chance from redemption from lastyear.
"They came in here the same gameas last year and took us out and weknew we didn't want that to happenagain," senior Max Keefe said.
He then added that "when you'rethe one seed you don't want to lose thefirst game you play.We saw how theseniors were in that last game and mebeing a senior now, for sure we don'twant that to happen again."
