Historically Karlsruhe is a young city: it was founded by margrave Karl-Wilhelm some 300 years ago. The legend tells he dreamt during one of his hunting parties, that he would build a castle at the spot where he was sleeping, hence the name Karlsruhe, meaning Karl’s privacy place. 300 years ago one could indeed realize such dreams.

The public transportation is excellent, serving many nearby cities, like Heidelberg, Strasbourg and places in the Black Forest.
