Formation of Shanghai Volunteer Corps decided upon by two meetings of representatives from the Three Treaty Powers-Great Britain, the United States and France.

Corps re-organised into 2 Infantry Companies, each 8o men strong, to assist in defence of Shanghai against attack by Taiping revolutionaries.

Corps engaged against second attack by Taiping Rebels. The Volunteer Mounted Rangers, some twenty strong and formed in r 86 r, augmented the two infantry companies, and were commanded by Captain Borlaise R.N.

Artillery Unit organised.

Volunteer Fire Brigade Service organised. Captain Roberts elected first Chief Engineer of the MIH-HO-LOONG (Fire Eating Devil) HOOK and LADDER Company.

Control of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps handed over to the Council "who shall, through their Chairman, decide upon all questions of organisation, and shall generally control the actions of the Corps." First Rifle Range constructed at · Range Road. The Mih-ho-loong Rifle Company was formed under the command of Captain Ashley. Two I2 pounder muzzle­loading brass howitzers and 500 Schnider rifles were purchased for the Corps which was mobilized to deal with local repercussions from the Tientsin Massacre. Composition of the Corps was now 3 Rifle Companies, Field Artillery Battery and Mounted Rangers. · ·

Ningpo Joss House riots. First S.V.C. Band organised.

A Gatling gun purchased, at Tls 2,2oo, for the Corps.

Home Guard (Veterans) Company re-organised into Reserve Company. This Reserve. was augmented by the enrolment of a number of sportsmen armed with fowling pieces and known as the "I2 Bore-Irregulars". Light Horse armed with Lances.

The Boxer Rebellion. New Drill Hall completed and a Volunteers' Club and Gymnasium inaugurated. An American Company temporarily enrolled, and Japanese and Customs Companies formed on a permanent basis. 6 Maxim machine guns loaned to the Carps by H.B.M. Government and attached to the Field Artillery Company. •

I927 Occupation of Greater Shanghai by Nationalists. Commandant, S.V.C. (Col. Gordon) assumed command of Internal Security Forces comprising the Volunteer Corps and all National Forces other than the Shaforce. Customs Company disbanded. Filipino Platoon attached to American Company. Inauguration of the Russian Volunteer Unit.

I929 Italian Unit disbanded.

1932 Sino-Japanese Hostilities. Transport, Jewish, Philippine, American Machine Gun, Field Reserve, Signals, Interpreter and Air Defence Companies formed. Old Engineer Company disbanded.

I936 Corp Artillery & Howitzer Battery disbanded. Light Battery became a Machine Gun Company.

I937 Sino-Japanese War. Final Mobilization of S.V.C.

I954

S.V.C. took over on permanent duty basis the occupation of "B" Sector when British Forces were withdrawn.

Settlement taken over by Japanese Forces.

Shanghai Volunteer Corps disbanded.

Centenary of S.V.C. celebrated by ex-members 1

of Corps residing in Hongkong. Corps Dinner at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on 2nd April I95+ Cricket match between S.V.C. and pre-war Hong Kong Volunteers at Hong Kong Cricket Club Ground on Sunday 4th April I 954-the Hundredth Anniversary of the Battle of Muddy Flats.
