Spring is here...

A fox greeted me when I came home one eve-ning. She trotted across the driveway and once

safely in the side yard she turned, sat and eyed me warily. In my headlights I saw her luxurious coat and a full tail that flicked slightly.

Most nights right after dusk the coyotes here are in full throat. They make such a primeval racket just simply sorting out things within the pack.

Once on a clear winter day I glanced out the window to see a solo hawk making lazy circles in a bright blue sky. A few days later through the same window it was startling to see two hulking owls in a

cottonwood. They perched like sentinels for much of the day, unmoving. There are a few does in our neighborhood with bellies stretched now, carrying fawns

who soon will join the rest of the herd. All these reminders underscore we share this corner of the world with a remarkable

variety of wildlife. As you enjoy this issue – our annual look at Home – let’s be mindful of all of our neighbors and do whatever we can to make life here as hospitable as possible.

When it comes to making a house a home, few companies have as much experience at remodeling as Boone Creek Cabinetry & Design, run by Michele and Denis Buch. They offer up timely advice for anybody ready for a remodeling project.

Stacey Adams of Blue Jay Paint & Blinds reminds us that a fresh coat of paint will revitalize a living space, both inside and out. Speaking of outside, take a look up. Thanks to Monica Zylinski and Gary Rogers of House Shampoo I’m noticing more and more dark streaks on roofs everywhere. Gary’s company has devised a low-pres-sure washing process using environmentally friendly solutions that makes area homes sparkle with new vitality.

Tim Meade is the patriarch of a family with two home improvement businesses, Reflections in Glass and American Garage Floor Systems. Learn on these pages how his family provides the finishing touches to so many area homes.

Finally, Kelli Schulte shares with us a few easy-to-apply strategies to keep stress in our homes at a minimum.

LAKE ZURICH’S FIRST BREW PUB PLANS OPENING

Imagine a comfy, upscale setting with world-class brews, tasty food from the occasional food truck and established neighboring restaurants in a refurbished venue with a Shakespearean reference. Imagine no more, says Lane Fearing, a Barrington resident and long-term brewer at Mickey Finn’s in Libertyville.

Roaring Table Brewery is the brainchild of Fearing and his wife, Beth May (a noted designer in her own right). The brewery, tucked away in a former retail space at 739 W. Route 22 (three doors west of Trader Joe’s) is aiming for an upscale vibe with lounge, couches, community tables and fireplace. Fearing, with a diploma from the renowned Siebel Institute, is a fan of Belgium and French farmhouse ales, as well as taste profiles not typically found around here, such as New England IPAs.

If all goes to plan with build out, delivery of equipment and licensing, Fearing and May could start making beer in late spring with a Grand Opening sometime this summer. To learn more, go to roaringtable.com.

TIMOTHY GRANT MOVES ON UP THE ROADBefore the holidays the moving signs went up at Timothy Grant

Jewelers in Lake Zurich. The much anticipated new store, a mile north of the former location  at 155 N. Rand Road (between Honey Lake and Old Rand Roads), is a real stunner. Patrons can shop in a private, more luxurious setting while receiving the extraordinary service and expert craftsmanship for which Timothy Grant is known.

To learn more, visit timothygrants.com, call 847.726.1556 or stop in to the new location.

WINE LOVERS NEED APPLY HERENorth Barrington’s Anton Steinhart has shared passions for wine

and helping others. After a church mission trip Steinhart launched a company that combines direct selling of upscale wines with fund-raising. Since starting Wines for Humanity Steinhart’s enterprise has seen tremendous growth, now operating in 14 states. To date, the company has made a difference of nearly $4 million dollars for locally based charities and not-for-profits.

The company is based on a simple premise: local advisors host fun wine tastings for gatherings of up to 16 neighbors and friends. Each advisor shares knowledge about wines, as well as tastings of at least seven varietals. The advisor provides the wines for a modest cost of $59 (plus tax) and brings all stemware. A host invites guests into their homes for an entertaining, educational experience. At the end of the tasting, interested guests may select bottles of wine for delivery later, knowing that up to 12.5% of each is donated to charity.

Steinhart says he is recruiting more advisors to join the Wines for Humanity team. In addition to raising funds, advisors personally trained by Steinhart make an attractive supplemental income just by sharing their love of wine. More importantly, the advisors are raising funds for charities focused on assisting the homeless.

To learn more about becoming an advisor, or to schedule a tasting in your home or for a favorite not-for-profit, visit winesforhumanity.com or call 847.917.3601.

New signage points the way to Timothy Grant’s new location, just south of Fritzl’s Country Inn in Lake Zurich.

LOVE’S TRUEST LANGUAGEFull of beautiful colors and bright blooms, spring is a flower lover's dream come true. Follow these simple steps to create a beautiful centerpiece everyone can enjoy this season.

PREPARATION:1. Select your flowers—explore your local grocery store, farmers markets and even your backyard garden for your favorite blooms. Give yourself plenty of colors and flowers to work with. I like to use four to six different flowers to give enough interest in the arrangement. Don’t forget to select greens, usually one to three different varieties. This spring don’t forget succulents!2. Prep your flowers by pulling off all the foliage from the stems. If anything is left behind it can contaminate the water, which in turn will clog the stems—a quick way to shorten the life of your flowers. 3. Prep your vase or container with tape, floral foam or chicken wire. Make sure you are working with a clean vase, fresh water and clean scissors.

HOW-TO:1. Start by using your greens to create a backdrop for your arrangement. Cover most of the tape/floral foam/chicken wire with greens. Don’t be afraid to leave some greens at different heights to create textures and interest. 2. Next, add in your flowers—start with the larger blooms, placing them in a focal spot to shine. I’ll fill in with smaller flowers turning the arrangement to keep it even on all sides. You can always add more greens or flowers until it feels full. 3. There are no rules when arranging for yourself—you get to choose what looks good to your eye. Don’t be afraid to cut the stems and have flowers be different heights—keep them taller to let them reach or cut them shorter to hide inside the arrangement. Experiment each time and try new shapes in your arranging. Just have fun with it. If it doesn’t work, pull it out and try another spot! 4. Don’t forget to change your water every couple of days. Keeping it clean will ensure that your flowers will last long enough for you to truly enjoy them!

ARTICLE MICHAEL BEIGHTOL

In an unassuming industrial park, just past a print shop and across from a pet store,

there's a pair of family-run businesses that are remarkable in so many ways.

The older company specializes in glass, designing and installing beautiful cre-ations including doors, tub and shower enclosures, mirrors, windows, table tops and wall partitions for both family homes and commercial businesses.

The newer company takes the most util-itarian of spaces–a garage–and transforms it into a showcase, and in many cases, a one-of-a-kind room using state of the art materials and custom designs on request.

The biggest surprise: the two compa-nies – Reflections in Glass and American Garage Floor Systems - are owned by the same family, with patriarch Tim Meade at the helm. Make no mistake, this is an all-in family affair that involves Tim's wife, Monica, sons Michael and Jeffrey, and daughter-in-law, Robin.

Early in his career Meade acquired a vari-ety of skills in construction. Like any budding entrepreneur, he knew one day he wanted

to be the one calling the shots, so 30 years ago he started a glass business based then in Lake Zurich. After just a few years of solid success a relocation of the company was necessary. Lake Barrington (22292 N. Pepper Road) was a good fit with room to grow, and most importantly, it was smack dab in middle of an area experiencing a construction boom.

As the company grew, family members started joining the enterprise doing what Meade often says “is putting the finish-ing touches to the hard work of a lot of tradesmen before us.”

Since 1987, Reflections in Glass has worked with contractors and families with solutions for shower doors, mirrors and industry-leading accessories to com-plete the custom bathroom of their cus-tomers’ dreams. The work is not limited to residential: “We do almost anything in glass,” says Meade.

At the other end of the home spectrum, there’s the garage floor, an abused, mostly neglected part of many homes that used to be just a place for parking cars and stor-ing the accoutrements of suburban life.

Thanks to advances in flooring systems and epoxy coatings, the garage can be the new star in a family home. Amazingly, according to Jeffrey Meade, after one of his crews completes an installation, the floor can be walked on in 2-6 hours and cars parked in just 24-26 hours. The younger Meade says the company also installs storage cabinets and shelving.

Founded in 2007 in the midst of the Great Recession, American Garage Floor Systems has grown steadily, addressing both res-idential and commercial flooring needs. Specializing in one-day flooring for not just garages, but also patios, decks, warehouses and much more, American Garage Floor Systems is the company in Lake Barrington where garages are transformed.

FUNCTION & FINESSE: THE ART OF REMODELING

ARTICLE MARGO PELAK | PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON

Remodeling a house – or even redecorat-ing a small room – can seem like a daunting process. Ask around. You’ll hear stories, good and bad. You’ll see photos, good and bad. You’ll get referrals, good and bad.

How do you know who to choose? How do you know what to do? Decisions must be made about design, function and budget. What can be done to ensure that the remod-eling story you’ll be telling your friends, when your own project is finished, will be a good one? How can you ensure that you won’t break your budget by doing it?

According to Michele and Denis Buch, owners of Boone Creek Cabinetry and Design, it’s crucial to spend the right amount of time planning a remodeling project up front.

In fact, the Buchs discuss dreams, goals

and budgets with their clients in depth. Then they develop a 10-step design and installation plan before any work begins. This way their clients are empowered to make informed and realistic decisions about what they want to do, what they can do and what will be most functional within the space they have.

"The way we approach a project is through education,” says Michele Buch, who has remodeled homes for 22 years.   The Buch’s practical expertise and guidance can pay off with clients who have little experience in remodeling. For example, Michele notes that many homeowners tend to spend a signif-icant amount of time and budget selecting higher-priced items first, like cabinetry and appliances, yet overlook faucets, which are the most frequently used item in a kitchen.

Page 18: SW Lake - Amazon Web Services

WHAT’S IMPORTANT ABOUT FAUCETS?

According to Michele, faucets should be considered up front, when creating the initial budget. The faucet’s features, finish, durabil-ity and design should be considered just as carefully as the higher priced items because it is used so frequently.

With innovative features like hands-free motion sensors, anti-microbial protection, splash mini-mizers and environmentally-friendly water saving features, faucets can make a big difference in a kitchen’s convenience and comfort. According to Michele, it shouldn’t be last thing you think about after you’ve allocated most of your money.

CUSTOM SOLUTIONS

Boone Creek has been redesigning homes—from single room projects to 12,000-square foot goliaths—for the past 42 years, and each client is given specialized, individual care and con-sideration. No family will have the same focus; therefore no family needs the same design. In fact, Michele says for a recently completed project she designed kitchen islands to pro-vide a client’s children with their own spaces for homework after school, all located within mom’s line of sight during dinner preparations.

Michele’s husband, Denis, who has 45 years of experience in design and remodeling, noted that their custom, comprehensive approach ensures that electrical and other requirements are antic-ipated and smoothly deployed.

Any legacy design shortcomings or struc-tural issues are carefully considered and prop-erly addressed in the remodel, according to the client’s unique budget and focus.

Boone Creek Cabinetry and Design is located at

764 Ridgeview Drive in McHenry, IL and can be

Buch's cabinetry features a wide range of fold-out storage and work space solutions.

Faucets are the most-used feature in the kitchen, and should be featured in your remodel.1

ROOF CLEANING

Leave

to an Expert

Tiles during cleaning

20 SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2017

Page 21: SW Lake - Amazon Web Services

oof cleaning is possibly the single most-ignored maintenance item on the typical homeowner's punch list.

Not only does a roof cleaning dramatically improve the curb appeal of a home, but it could literally save tens of thousands of dollars in expense from premature roof replacement due to shingle failure.

A roof with dark streaks means living colonies of algae, lichens and moss have taken root.  Not only does a roof like this appear neglected, but these organisms cause shingles to deteriorate at a rate that can sacrifice up to 50% of the roof ’s intended service life.

A soft-wash, solution-based roof cleaning uses specialized low-pres-sure equipment, and when professionally applied will safely, gently, and thoroughly remove all traces of an infestation.  This will result in revitalizing the shingles and restoring the intended beauty of the roof.

Pressure should never be used on cedar or asphalt shingles.  Cedar is a natural, rugged material that can withstand a great deal, but in the case of cleaning, killing the flora and allowing it to dry and release in its own time is key to preserving the roof 's structural integrity. Asphalt shingles have protective granules that will dislodge when pressure is applied, compromising the reflective surface protection.  Power washing will also void a manufacturer’s warranty.

LEAVE IT TO A PRO

Roof cleaning is a profession. Clerks in big box stores may make it sound like a simple task to just pick up a few gallons of consumer cleaner to be sprayed on the roof, but don’t be fooled. Here are the top five reasons why roof cleaning should be left to professionals:

1. It’s dangerous.  Most homeowners lack experience on ladders, much less working on a pitched roof while hauling equipment and hoses in unpredictable weather conditions. The risk of injury or death is obvious.

2. There are several types of flora that colonize on shingles. The extent of the infestation also varies. Knowing what, how and when to treat the array of invasive organisms is crucial.

3. Understanding the amount of solution material to use in order to fully saturate the shingles is a craft that is learned through years of experience.

4. It’s not uncommon for a homeowner to go through the process of buying expensive cleaning products, hauling out equipment

and spending a weekend spraying a dirty roof only to find that the product was inef-fective. Save time and money, and be safe, by calling a reputable pro.

5. Roof cleaning is worth the invest-ment. Every homeowner deserves contrac-tor-grade product, equipment and the exper-tise of a professional who is insured and offers guaranteed workmanship. The result will be a beautiful, fully restored, spotless roof in less than a day.

PREPARE FOR ADVENTURE

Travel Destination

Now more than ever, people are travel-ing in search of authenticity. They no

longer wish to simply visit a destination; instead, they yearn for a deeper sense of understanding and connection.

Not content to just visit Paris, bucket list travelers now want wine and cheese pairings or pastry baking workshops. Rather than wishing to see Peru, travelers now dream of watching the sun rise at the sun gate at Machu Picchu. Travelers are striving to expe-rience what makes a destination truly unique and are not content with simply visiting to check off a box to say they’ve been there. What experiences are tied to a specific place? How may a traveler better understand the places visited? Moving beyond the simple guidebook recaps of a country’s history and a travel writer’s one-and-done recommen-dations, what emotional connections can be made to the land and people encountered?

The very idea of getting off the beaten path - exploring a destination under one’s own terms - is part of what defines

A Dealership You’ll Want to Call Home

adventure travel. Many hear the word “adventure” and assume it means climbing mountains or jumping out of airplanes. Nowadays adventure travel encompasses much more. Now, adventure can also define emotionally expanding beyond one’s comforts of home. From this, we see a shift in the definition of adventure travel. Adventure no longer needs to mean just adrenaline, but immersion, too.

Of course, traditional “hard” adventure travel still exists - but it is celebrated for what it is, rather than assuming that all adventure travel falls into this definition. Athletic-minded travelers can still enjoy long hiking and cycling trips; but for those who might not find this type of travel to be their preference, soft adventure - or immersive travel- is the new trend.

Instead of a being in a large group bussed from place to place with a day jam-packed with photo stops while following a flag on a pole, immersive travel is designed to help travelers truly under-stand the places they visit by offering interactions with locals, eat-ing at traditional restaurants, staying in locally-owned, character rich accommodations, and tends to be more education-focused. Immersive travel introduces activities that are not available for tra-ditional forms of tourism, giving travelers a chance to participate in traditional activities, culinary practices, and other activities that foster a deeper understanding and connection to the destination.

For travelers whose wish lists include experiences rather than destinations, who want to get more off-the-beaten path, who favor authentic interactions, and who prefer to get a more in-depth and meaningful understanding of the people and places they visit - immersive travel is the best way to go.

well-placed accent color can help bring focus and life to an all-too-boxy space. An accent wall can also help bring order and focus to a busy space, by drawing attention to one part of the space. Think about applying a simple chair rail and a bolder tone color on the lower walls in the dining room. This will lend an air of formality and interest to a casual room.

Remember to look up when you are thinking of painting the walls, as ceilings are often overlooked. Ceilings often are painted infrequently compared to other areas of a room, and can look dingy after a fresh coat on the walls. An interesting possibility is to make the ceiling a color other than white. A ceiling with color can help tie together a room with bold color on the walls, or can make a room with a tall ceiling seem less rectangular.

Don’t forget the furniture! Paint can update older pieces at a much lower cost than replace-ment. Simple off white can make a large piece look smaller, or bold color can be used as an accent. Painting furniture is a simple project for the do-it-yourselfer. A more involved project, but not out of reach for homeowners, is painting kitchen cabinets. For a fraction of the cost

of replacement, paint will provide a durable, long lasting surface that will transform your kitchen. Practice first by painting a furniture piece or bathroom vanity before tackling the entire kitchen. Using the correct tools and products is essential to making this endeavor a success.

Home exteriors are usually a large expanse of single color broken up by an alternate trim color. A new bold door color can really create interest in the front of the home. A strong yellow or blue can be a great alternative to traditional black, red, or brown. This project can be completed in a matter of hours and the results are dramatic. If you have the space think about some potted plants for the front porch. The pots can be painted to match the door or in a bold contrasting color. These are simple, low cost projects to add visual interest to your home.

Painting is an affordable option for updat-ing and refreshing your home. Doing it yourself can be easier than you think. Visit an expert at your local paint store who can guide you to the right tools and offer the nec-essary advice to complete your project.

Parting Thoughts

tress is on the rise impacting young and old. So what can we do to help foster a peaceful climate at home?

Turn Inward: Throughout the day, most of us experience an assortment of emotions and thoughts that come and go, all influencing the way we interact with others. Many of us learn to ignore, stuff, and push feelings aside. Unfortunately, that's a dangerous practice. Emotions are important data points helping us under-stand situations. For example, the feeling of anger helps us recognize that a problem exists.

It is important to note there is no such thing as good feelings or bad feelings. All feelings provide value. It's how we respond or react to the feeling that can influence a result. Learning to be smart with feelings and thoughts will lead to greater con-nections in relationships while lowering stress.

CHALLENGE #1

Identify and name your feelings throughout the day. What clues are feeling providing? Pay attention to how feelings influence your thoughts and actions.  For a starter list of emotions go to www.eqcoaching.net/enhance-emotional-literacy/.

When you are unable to navigate your emotions, you can find yourself reacting to things on autopilot. Take this scenario as an example.

After a hard day at work that left you feeling frustrated and  under-appreciated you arrive home to hear the TV blasting while your son plays video games. The kitchen is also a disaster because your daughter is making cookies for her boyfriend. You immediately snap.

Neuroscience helps us to understand that a perceived threat sends a physical reaction throughout the body (i.e. heart racing, tense muscles, etc.) resulting in an autopilot reaction such as snapping in the heat of the moment. Interestingly, waiting for six seconds and engaging the thinking part of your brain can help you move from simply reacting to intentionally choosing how you want to respond.

CHALLENGE #2

Pay attention to the auto-pilot reactions you have throughout the day and challenge yourself to count to six (or even 60!) before responding. During that time, identify your feelings and thoughts. Challenge yourself to think about options and consequences before responding.

Learn to Use Empathy: As you move towards being intentional with a response, seek to understand others with empathy.

CHALLENGE #3

Practice using empathy with these five steps.• Take a six second pause.• Consider how your thoughts and feelings are influ-

encing your view. Suspend judgment.• Consider the possible feelings the other person may

be experiencing and their right to them.• Listen and practice mirroring what you are hearing

(both thoughts and emotions) in your own words.• Seek to understand and show interest with your

response: “What has that been like for you? How has that made you feel? That must have been hard.”

Studies show that developing emotional intelligence leads to healthier relationships, less stress, improved effectiveness and greater life satisfaction.  The best thing is it’s never too late to start developing these skills for a happier home.
