WELLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL 1 Term1-Week 5 Volume 22-Issue 2 SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2018 During Week 3, 14 th February, WHS held their annual Swimming Carnival and I am very happy to announce that BARTON won the carnival! Barton 175 Norman 162 McLeod 151 Taylor 116 It was one of the closest house point results in the past few years. I would like to congratulate the students of Barton house and especially the house captains Kaneesha Staggs, Mason Dutfield, Mattison Quarman and Scott Tailby on their efforts throughout the day. I am looking forward to seeing all of the houses compete at the other carnivals throughout the year. There were approximately 150 students that attended the day and there was a lot of tough racing. Special mention needs to go to Samantha Thompson broke the 12/13 years 200m freestyle record (2:41:84) that has stood since 1995 set by Peta Haesler (2:42:47). What an amazing achievement! For each age group students were allocated points for participation in any event. Once all of the calculations were completed the following students were awarded Age Champions. Great effort! I would like to thank all the families and community members that came to the WHS Swimming Carnival. Also Wellington Swimming Club for the use of their equipment and last but certainly not least the team at the Wellington Pool. Best of luck to Samantha Thompson and Heavenly Dwyer for making it through to the Western School Sport Association (WSSA) Swimming trials coming up later this term. Western School Sport Association (WSSA) NEWS

In the coming months the students at WHS have the opportunity to trial for various WSSA teams. If selected in the WSSA team in their chosen sport the student will then attend the Combined High Schools (CHS) Championships. If trials are coming up I will place a notice on the school notification system and then it is the responsibility of the student to see me for more information regarding the trials that they would like to attend. Here is a link that you can visit to see what sports are coming up and where the CHS Championships will be held. https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/Calendar/TermCalendar?t=0&a=11&ml=False

Our school has certainly been a hive of activity over the past few weeks. The swimming carnival was a great success (despite the fact that Norman did not win!) with high participation rates from the students in attendance on the day. The point score was very close with only 50 points separating the 4 houses. Congratulations to Barton House who have not had their hands on any silverware for over 10 years! Let’s hope that the other houses continue to strive hard and make the athletics carnival as close. There have been a number of visitors to the school already this year. Last week we hosted the Hogs for the Homeless who spoke to Year 10 and 11 about the importance of education and the impact it has on future happiness and security. Many of the students joined them in the laying of the turf and painting the sheds at Kennard Park. We also hosted a workshop this week delivered by Moorambilla Voices. Year 7 and 8 plus the elective music classes enjoyed a full hour of singing and dancing. We are now waiting to find out whether any of our students will be invited to join the group when they tour later this year. We are very keen to have parents and the community assisting us in providing the best education possible for our town. As part of this process we are holding a Stage 4 information evening for parents and carers of Year 7 and 8 on Tuesday 20th March from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet all your child’s teachers and also see some of the work they have been doing this year. Our Executive will also be providing important information about some of the expectations and processes we have to make school more productive and enjoyable. I am looking forward to seeing you all there. Our P and C meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. It would be great to see as many people as possible there to help make our school even better. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 20/3/18 in the school library commencing at 6:15 pm. Please contact the school for more details. A reminder to continue ensuring that all students are in uniform each day and that all absences need to be explained with a note or a phone call to the front office. Remember- all students must attend a minimum of 85% of all school days each year. Please read our newsletter and don’t forget to like us on Facebook! Rod Cosier Principal

FITNESS TESTING IN PDHPE

During Term One all students in Years 7 to 10 at Wellington High School have been learning about fitness testing. All students have performed several fitness tests and have been encouraged to strive for their personal best. Fitness is more than just being able to run fast and lift heavy things. There are 11 components of fitness and they are divided into Health Related Components of Fitness and Skill Related Components of Fitness. Health related components involve exercise activities that you do in order to try to improve your physical health and stay healthy. They include:

Cardiorespiratory Endurance

Muscular Strength

Muscular Endurance

Flexibility

Body Composition

Skill related components of fitness enable us to perform physical activity with greater skill. There are six skill related components:

Agility

Balance

Reaction Time

Speed

Power

Coordination Students have been trying to improve on their own personal best in the following fitness tests:

Beep test: This tests Cardiovascular Endurance and involves running consecutive 20m shuttles until we are physically tired. There have been some excellent results this year with some students achieving a score of more than 9.

50m Sprint: This tests our speed. We have been using the athletics track at Rygate and showing off our best Usain Bolt impersonations.

Grip Strength: We have used a special machine to test how strong our grip is.

Sit and Reach: This tests flexibility by seeing how close we can get to touching our toes or even going past them.

Agility Test: Sports that use agility include Touch Football and Soccer. A short video of our students participating in fitness testing will be posted to our school website and Facebook page. Be sure to take the time to have a look and post a like.
