Swimming coachin boy-sex shock
ACCUSED: Former national swimming coach and official Terry Buck
ByADAMWALTERSin Sydney
AN OLYMPIC medallist has blownthe lid off what he calls a ‘‘child sexabuse cover-up’’ spanning 12Olympiads at the highest levels ofAustralian swimming.
The former Australian swim teamcaptain has spoken out in frustrationafter a police strike force, set up toinvestigate allegations against thelate high profile coach Terry Buck, was wound up.
The explosive allegations cameafter a tip off from a police informantinvolved in protecting children frompredatory sporting coaches.
The former Olympic and Common-wealth medallist was approached bydetectives to detail his own experi-ences as a victim.
He co-operated fully with police, handing investigators a list of 29other victims, three of whom hadcommitted suicide. A total of fourOlympic swimmers, including a cel-ebrated gold medallist, and two surf-ing champions were on the list.
Strike Force Solano spent fivemonths investigating the allegationsbut was disbanded in April 2001 withlittle explanation despite the willing-ness of the swimmer, his youngerbrother and a third man to testify.
Still deeply disturbed by the depthand pain of his disclosures, thewhistleblower is now demanding pol-ice reopen the investigation.
‘‘I poured my soul out to them andthen there was nothing. They droppedme like a hot cake,’’ he said.
A spokesman for the Police Com-missioner has confirmed the originalbrief was not forwarded to the Direc-tor of Public Prosecutions, eventhough senior detectives had ‘‘nodoubt’’ about the honesty and integ-rity of those making the allegations.
‘‘The leading investigator InspectorPeter Yeomans had every sympathyfor (the man). He absolutely believedeverything he said,’’ the commission-er’s spokesman said.
Terry Buck died in 2005 after atractor accident. The praise at Buck’sfuneral was glowing but the policeinformant who initiated inquiries in1998 tells a sordid a story about
Buck’s involvement in ‘‘the darkside’’ of the sport.
Fearing repercussions for his chil-dren, who swim competitively, thegold medallist has said that he wantsto protect his identity after being ‘‘lefthigh and dry’’ by the police.
He tells a harrowing story of beingtargeted by Buck as an 11 year-old atthe Clovelly Surf Club, and assaultedfor the following seven years.
A detailed statement from his law-yer said he has since suffered de-pression, loss of libido, emotionaldistress, humiliation, headaches, shock, anxiety and mood swings.
‘‘I was all set to testify but the policepulled the plug on the whole thing,’’he said.
In detailing the profound impact ofthe swimmer’s disclosures to police, apsychologist’s report noted ‘‘symp-toms of mental disturbance’’.
He then prepared civil action , butthe cost of ‘‘going it alone’’ wasprohibitive, and within two yearsBuck was dead in what was reportedas a tragic farm accident.
‘‘Although he is dead there areother people with a lot to lose whenthe whole truth eventually comesout,’’ he said.
