What is H1N1 - Swine Flu• H1N1 is a new virus and humankind does not have herd immunity against it and

hence the rapid spread

• In tropical countries like India there is propensity towards flu epidemics in monsoon season due to high humidity, cooler temperatures and indoor crowding of people

• No need to panic! It is self-limiting illness

• In India the virus is producing milder illness and no fatality is reported so far

• It is an air borne disease and does not spread through food or drinking water

• The symptoms are similar to regular seasonal flu – fever, chills, body ache, headache, cough, sneezing, runny nose, throat pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, loose motions

• Best way of prevention of any flu is to maintain good personal hygiene, to stay in good health with proper sleep, balanced diet with plenty fluids and exercise and reducing time spend in crowded places

H1N1 virus – Facts

• Who is a suspected case of H1N1 Flu? A person with respiratory symptoms and fever (1) within seven days

of close contact with a person who is a confirmed case of H1N1 Flu (2) Within seven days of travel to community where there are confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu (3) who resides in a community where there are confirmed case of H1N1 Flu

• Who is a close contact? Anyone who comes within three feet of a confirmed case and

remains there for at least an hour

• What is the treatment? The treatment for a confirmed case is isolation and Tamiflu

(Oseltamivir) tablets. ( available only in govt. identified hospitals) Testing and treatment are available only with Government

organizations. All cases do not require Tamiflu tablets

Check yourself!• If you have Flu symptoms; don’t Panic!• Self Checks: Have you been in touch with any affected person or

come in contact with person coming from abroad with similar symptoms

• If the answers to above are YES; visit a doctor and take medical prescription before proceeding to H1N1 Test

• If the answer is NO please see a doctor, take medication and practice Self Quarantine – stay at home and maintain a distance of 2 metres from others, wear a mask and use hand sanitisers frequently

• More People die in India of Dengue, Pneumonia and TB.• The diseases can be controlled if we can change our attitude and

believe in “Prevention better than Cure”

WHO has declared some guidelines to be H1N1 virus free. The 3 most important points in the preventive measures are:

• Cover your nose and mouth with disposable tissues when coughing or sneezing

• Regularly wash hands with soap and water several times during the day

• If soap and water are not accessible, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers that kill 99.9% germs on hands

• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands

Effective Hand Hygiene

It’s a 3-step ProcessHand Washing – Use liquid soap and warm water and wash hands for at least 20 seconds to clean visibly dirty hands. Soap bars spread contamination. Hence, liquid soap from closed dispenser is recommended.

Hand Sanitising – Only 2 drops of hand sanitizers kill 99.9% germs on hands. Use them before eating, after visiting washrooms and whenever the “not so visibly dirty” hands need to be cleaned. No soap or water is required before or after using a sanitizer.

• Install hand sanitizer dispensers in the kitchen and cafeteria – mandatory for premises that serve meals. And, install them at the main entrance gates of the campus.

• Kids below 6 years of age should not use sanitizers without supervision. Hence, install a sanitizer dispenser in their sections.

• Advise people to carry portable sanitizer bottles and tissue packs with them.

• Put up H1N1 precaution Information and Hand Hygiene posters in the campus.
