*Sydney Opera House
*Introduction*Opera House is a symbol of Sydney,
Australia.*It is one of the greatest iconic buildings of
the 20th century *It is located on Bennelong Point in Sydney
Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, neighboured by the Royal Botanic Gardens.
*Who was the designer ?
*The designer was Danish architect Jorn Utzon.*In 1957 he
unexpectedly won the competition to design the Sydney Opera House.*His design of the Opera
House was fourteen “shells”.
* When was the Opera House built?
*It began in March 1959, the project was built in three stages.* Stage I (1959–1963)
consisted of building the upper podium.* Stage II (1963–1967)
saw the construction of the outer shells.* Stage III (1967–1973)
consisted of the interior design and construction.
* When was the Opera House Opened?
*It was opened on 20 October 1973.*The opening ceremony
was by Elisabeth II, Queen.*Unfortunately the
architect Jorn Utzon wasn’t invited to the ceremony and he never saw the completed Opera House.
*How much did it cost ?
*Completed in 1973, the cost was $102 million.*The original cost estimate in 1957 was $7
million and the completion date was in 1963 in Australia Day.*But the cost was over by more than
fourteen time and the completed ten years late.
*The Performance Venues*The Concert Hall, Opera Theatre, Drama
Theatre,*Playhouse, Utzon Room, Forecourt.*Other Facilities such as studio, cafes,
restaurants, bar and retail outlets.The daily guided tours are available to the public.
