The source of the originals
by Hans E. Meier
The Exclusive Collection
The Platinum Collection is an exclusive series of optimized classic typefaces from Linotype. In close collaboration with world-famous type designers, Linotype has produced reworked, expanded typeface families that are both technologically and aesthetically up to date. These new typeface families have fine, harmonious weights; some have new italic weights and often come complete with Small Caps and Old style figures. All Platinum Collection typeface families have fine-tuned and perfected character fitting and forms.
The Linotype Platinum Collection currently includes the typeface families listed below. Further projects are in preparation.

Linotype Syntax – exclusive by Platinum Collection
Syntax design. The five types of Syntax Antiqua were the last hot metal types produced by the Ger- man type foundry Stempel AG. The cooperation between Hans Eduard Meier and Linotype began in 1995. Syntax was carefully designed according to the original design and with none of the alterations which had been made to the hot-metal and photo-
Almost half a century has passed since Hans Eduard Meier drew the first pencil sketches in 1955 which would provide the basis for the forms and scope of today’s Linotype Syntax typeface family. Considering the technical develop- ments which led from hot metal composition to digitization, the passage of time is a strong affir- mation of the timelessness of the
setting types. New typefaces were added along the way and the type- face family including Linotype Syntax, Linotype Syntax Letter and Linotype Syntax Serif is now as versatile as it is extensive. And it met with international acclaim: in 2000, the Type Directors Club of New York recognized Linotype Syntax as one of the most out- standing typefaces of our time.

Behutsam wurde die Syntax wieder den alten Originalvorlagen ange- glichen, denn die Einschränkungen des Blei- und Fotosatzes brachten nachteilige Veränderungen mit sich. Später kamen neue Schnitte hinzu;

Hans Eduard Meier originally designed Syntax as a sans serif with the dynamic forms of an Old Face. The reworking and further develop- ment perfected the legibility and versatility of the types. They are all distinguished by a light, almost imperceptible slant to the right and the right angles of the endings of the slanted d strokes. The character spacing of the regular styles is almost identical to that of the italics and the combination of the two produces a balanced appearance even in longer texts. Text set in all caps, for example, headlines, are also even and aesthetic.
The Linotype Syntax include three kinds of numerals: tabular figures, old style figures and small caps figures.

Based on Linotype Syntax, Hans Eduard Meier and Linotype collabo-rated to develop Linotype Syntax Serif. The addition of the serifs resulted in a classic Old Face. Character spacing and stroke thick- ness are identical to those of Linotype Syntax. Serif and sans serif styles can also be used inter- changeable to create a balanced, harmonious text appearance. It is completely up to the designer whether to use Linotype Syntax as a sans serif, Linotype Syntax Serif as an Old Face, or a duet of the two together. Versatility and excellent legibility are always guaranteed.
The Linotype Syntax Serif includes small caps and three kinds of numerals: tabular figures, old style figures and small caps figures. Linotype Syntax Serif is not a part of the Platinum Collection.

The name discloses its purpose: Linotype Syntax Letter suggests hand- written characters without actually imitating handwriting. The basic design is that of Linotype Syntax but the forms are narrower and the italic has less slant than other Linotype Syntax italics. The many weights give the typeface a high degree of flexibility. And because correspondence is only one part of office communication, Linotype Syntax Letter ‘corresponds’ perfectly with all other Linotype Syntax types. Using them in combination with one another results in a lively contrast. Users who are not as well acquainted with typography can work effectively with these types.
The Linotype Syntax Letter contain tabular figures and old style figures.Linotype Syntax Letter is not a part of the Platinum Collection.
