Autumn is coming to an end and as wehead into the colder Winter months it canbe easy to forget to treat our furry familymember for parasites such as fleas andworms. The Summer months can oftenincrease parasite pressure as parasitestend to thrive in the warmer weather, butthat doesn't mean they disappear inWinter. Due to most houses having centralheating, and fleas being as resilient asthey are, they have become a year roundproblem. Almost all of our clients use NexgardSpectra as a monthly broad-spectrumcontrol of parsites, not only because it iseasy to give, but also because most dogswill eat it like a treat due to its beef flavour.

Nexgard Spectra can be started from just8 weeks of age and from 2kg, and with 5weight ranges it enables appropriatedosing as puppies grow. You also don'tneed to worry about your beloved furryfamily member having a bath or going fora swim as Nexgard is not a topicaltreatment there are no fears of it washingaway! Head into the clinic with your dog and wewill weight them for you to ensure theyreceive the correct weight range chew.Every time you purchase a NexgardSpectra at Ashwood it will permanently goon your dogs file, so if you ever forgetwhen it was last given you can simply giveus a call to check!

Ashwood Top Tip – Why not treat your pooch with their

monthly Nexgard Spectra treatment on the first of every

month? That way it makes it easy for you to remember

when it is due.

Caring for your pet in WinterCaring for your pet in Winter

Watch what your dog eats at Christmas!Watch what your dog eats at Christmas!

If you ever think your pet has ingested anti-freeze please contact us immediately.

We know how tempting it can be to share your Christmas dinner with yourfluffy best friend but did you know that some foods can be very dangerous todogs? If your dog is sneaky and does manage to eat any of these foods, please contact us or Vets Now immediately.

Most anti-freeze products contain ethyleneglycol which is extremely toxic to cats anddogs. You'll find that animals will lickspillages from the road or the garagebecause of the sweet taste it has, but theeffects of anti-freeze can be fatal as it canharm their kidneys.Symptoms of anti-freeze positioninginclude: drinking more than usual, pet islethargic, vomiting, seizures, panting, twitches, spasms, collapsed.

During the Winter months the temperaturedrops and it is important that we adjusthow we take care of our pets. We want toensure your dog, cat, rabbit or other fluffystays as safe and warm over the Wintermonths.Your pets activity in Winter shouldn'tchange just because it's a little bit colderoutside, but if you're worried about themyou could always provide them with a coat!If it's been wet outside on your walk don'tforget to towel them off and remove anyexcess water - this will help them warm upsooner when you get inside. Small animals like rabbits and guinea pigsshould be moved somewhere dry anddraught free, like a garage!

Winter also brings darker days, so whenyou're out walking your dog it's importantthey are well seen. We recommend buyinga reflective collar or harness for yourpooch to ensure drivers and othermotorists see them clearly.

In icy cold conditions some roads anddriveways may have salt on them. Thiscan get into your pets paws and betweentheir toes and cause irritation, so makesure to check their paws and clean themto remove any leftover grit/dirt.

In colder months cats tend to try and takeshelter where they can, so make sure tocheck under your car and in the enginebefore starting off on your journey.

Our newsletter special mention goes to Roxy the lovely Boxer. Shestarted her hydrotherapy journey back in June 2020 when herowners noticed she was starting to limp on her left forelimb. Wediscovered that she had a permanent muscle injury in her shoulderand started her on hydrotherapy sessions weekly. Roxy hadalways felt a bit nervous around water. However, with gentleencouragement (we have special ways of helping our patients feelconfident about water), she was soon loving her sessions and sixmonths later, she's really doing great!

I love meeting new people and their canine friends! I am lookingforward to growing the hydrotherapy client base in 2021 and I amexcited to see how we can offer this service to even more petsnext year.

Please get in touch with me to learn more!

Here at Ashwood, we offer unique and bespoke hydrotherapyfor our canine (and feline!) best friends. Hydrotherapy is awarm-water based therapy. It is interactive, positive and fun.My hydrotherapy work with our patients is in our pool, withswimming and water-platform physiotherapy, using theorthopaedic ramp, and warm water massage. Hydrotherapy atAshwood has lasting positive effects on our caninecompanion. It is a non-weight bearing and low impact therapy, which means it is gentle on your dog’s muscles and joints inthe pool whilst building strength and flexibility. We getincredible results. In fact, many of our clients have said thathydrotherapy at Ashwood has given their best friend a newlease of life! With rehabilitation cases, I work closely with our vets andevery session is designed specifically for that case. One of the things I love most about offering hydrotherapy isplanning unique treatment programs for:• Arthritis• Stiffness• Lameness• Strength & Stamina
