Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry)As Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patienceAbove all, clothe yourselves with love, whichbinds everything together in harmony
Pauls letter to the Colossian Church, 3.5-17
Put to death sounds like a typical Lenten theme, or does it? Lent is full of give upthis, or putting away something else. For some reason, it is so easy for us Luther-ans to deprive ourselves of things than to look for the places where God is giving something goodto us. There is a story of Martin Luther, however that proves the opposite.
It seems that the Reverend Doctor was at a local restaurant during Lent, taking his noon day mealwhen a fellow rival walked in for his meal. The rival spied Luther and noted that he was eating sau-sages in Lent! What a travesty to eat meat in the period of fasting. The man confronted Luther withhis sinfulness and Luther responded by shoving another sausage in his mouth!
I dont know whether the story is factual, but it does reveal something very real, quite truthful
about Lent: that which God has created should never control us, as if the creation were actually theCreator.
Pauls letter to the Colossians, quoted above, focuses on how to live faithfully as a follower of Je-sus. The letter gives some household rules for the Christian household, as well as some other in-structions for living as a disciple of Jesus. The central point of the letter, however, is not aboutrules and regulations. The central focus is the Christians fullness of life in Christ.
Its easy to get mixed up in the dos and donts, and to miss the point of enjoying life to the full-est with Christ. The letter reminds me of someone who talks about the wonders of being in love toothers, and ignores the object of his/her affection when the two are alone.
Lent is our time, as followers of Jesus, to renew that loving relationship. Its our time to re-clotheourselves in the beautiful salvation that God gives us in Jesus. On Ash Wednesday, we promise toput aside anything that distracts us from that relationship, but throughout the 40 days, we dontconcentrate on our unworthiness. Rather, we focus on Gods choice to love and care for us.
Lenta time of growth; a time of rekindling the flame of Gods desire in our hearts.
In our preparation to experience the fullness of God in our lives, let us search the heart of God andfind what God desires for us.
Peace and blessings for a Blessed Lent,
Pr Tim
