What transfiguration do I mean? Above all, the eschatological transfiguration that will happen at the end of time, when the Lord Jesus, as the Apostle Paul says, will transform the body of our humiliation so that it may be conformed to the body of his glory (Phil 3:21). According to Produs of Constantinople, “Christ was transfigured to show us the future transfiguration of our nature and his second coming.” This concept is also present in the West. The Transfiguration, writes Saint Leo the Great, occurred “so that it [the Church] might know with what sort of exchange the whole body of Christ was to be given, and that the members might promise to themselves a sharing in the honor of the one who had shone as their Head.”

Even in antiquity there were some who saw not only our final transformation but also that of the whole cosmos prefigured in the Transfiguration. On Tabor, says Anastasius of Sinai, Christ “transfigured all of creation into his image and recreated it in an even more sublime way.”…

It is through contemplation that we can enter into the mystery of the Transfiguration here and now, make it ours, and participate in it.

Father Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. CAP.Fr. Cantalamessa is the preacher to the papal household.

In order for an event in Jesus’ life to be a mystery, it is not enough, however, that “something is accomplished in Christ.” The event must also have a salvific significance for his whole body in that it is a pattern and an effective cause for the members of the Church…

The Church celebrates not only Christ’s Transfiguration but her own as well.

SEMINARIANS’  PRAYER  KNEELERS—THANK  YOU!We thank all of you who have offered and will continue to offer prayers for Deacons Peter Ascik and Brian Becker, for the sanctification of our priests and for an increase in vocations. Many thanks to those parishioners who wrote encouraging and prayerful messages in their prayer intention books.

We thank Mary’s Sons for this blessed opportunity again this year to host the kneelers. May God bless our seminarians and priests with graces that will undoubtedly flow from your many prayers. Mary’s Sons is an apostolate established by lay Catholics in our diocese. Their mission is to promote prayer, support and love for our priests through daily prayer, sacrifices, and by supporting monthly Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hours in our parishes for an increase in vocations and for the sanctification of our priests. If you are interested in joining Mary’s Sons, please contact Robyn Magyar at: [email protected]. Robyn is a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas in Charlotte—Pastor, Fr. Patrick Winslow.
