CareMonkey - information for parents We have employed the services of CareMonkey to provide infrastructure and systems for us that makes communication between home and school more efficient and effective. CareMonkey is an award winning platform for automating consent forms, medical records, camps etc. CareMonkey is used by schools, sporting clubs, camps and businesses, youth and church groups. More information about CareMonkey will be sent out to parents over the coming weeks. 2019 Online Canteen Orders The Canteen successfully introduced an online ordering system at the beginning of the 2018 school year. The on-line system has proven to be successful and therefore, the Canteen will be phasing out of cash orders by the end of the 2018 school year. From 2019, all orders through the Canteen will be completed online.

2019 NAPLAN online information In 2018, the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced the transition from a paper based assessment to an online assessment. Preparation is currently underway to make the transition to NAPLAN online. In 2019, students will complete NAPLAN tests online via a secure locked down browser on a chromebook or tablet. NAPLAN online delivers the following benefits to students:

● Innovate use of technology, a more engaging test design and a wider range of item types ● A ‘tailored test’ design that adapts to the correct and incorrect student responses, providing more

precise understanding of student achievement. ● The extension of the ‘test window’ to two weeks, allowing greater opportunity to schedule tests around

student commitments. More information on NAPLAN online will be provided to parents throughout this year and in 2019. P&F Committee Throughout 2018, a new model of fundraising was trailed to reduce the load on the P&F and parent volunteers. Therefore, rather than having a P&F Committee, parents were invited to assist with school events and fundraising activities giving whatever time that they could offer. At the School Board Meeting last Thursday evening, this model was reviewed and endorsed as the preferred way of offering parents the opportunity to participate in school events and fundraising activities. We thank you for your continued support and working together to provide our students with many opportunities to participate in these events. Book Week - Dress up day - Thursday 23 August Theme: Find Your Treasure Next week we celebrate Book Week with a special dress up day to come as your favourite book character on Thursday 23 August. We will begin the day with Book Week Parade and Play in the hall at 9.00am. Levels will participate in activities throughout the day and families are invited to join us in these activities. Please see your child’s class teacher for more information. Information on accessing Typing Tournament As part of building our students ICT skills and capabilities, students get the opportunity to practice their keyboard skills through the Typing Tournament app. Typing Tournament guides students to the last lesson that was accessed and the skill to be attained. It is essential when learning the skill that students are focused on the placement of keys on the keyboard and following the prompts on the screen. Please find below the steps on how you can access Typing Tournament at home. Sign into Google Chrome using student login details. These details are accessible via student diary or dictionary.

1. Once signed into Chrome enter the following url in the address bar: www.typingtournament.com.au

2. Select Login at the top right hand side of the page. 3. You are then provided with two options:

Login to your account or Use another account 4. Select 'Use another account' Login using Google. 5. Select the 'Typing Tournament App Online' and 'Access' 6. Select the class and 'View Map'

Fri 21st September ________________________________________ THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY

Wednesday 15th August

Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. On this feast day we celebrate a special favour that God gave to Mary,

our Mother. The Assumption means that Mary was taken up into the glory of heaven not only

with her soul, but also with her body. Jesus, the Son of God was born from Mary's pure womb. So

when Mary died, God the Father and Jesus, would not let the body of the Mother of God be spoilt. This was her reward for her love of God and her years of faithful prayers and suffering.

Now Mary is in heaven. She is queen of heaven and earth. She is the Mother of Jesus' Church and queen of Apostles. Every time Mary asks

Jesus to give us graces, he listens to her request. As we celebrate the feast day of Mary, we can ask our Blessed Mother Mary to guide, protect

and care for us.

FAMILY WEEK

OFFICIAL OPENING OF OLHC PARISH CHURCH

AN INVITATION

Dear Families,

It is important to be able to look back with gratitude to God and remember that he guides us with wisdom and

grace to continue his work today. On February 16th 1980 our parish was established and in these 38 years we

have seen significant change, many people have come and gone, yet our parish remains. In January 2017, we

began discussions about some significant change to our sacred space and parish office and also envisaged a

parish centre to cater to the needs of our vibrant community at present and for many years to come. After

a patient and lengthy building process we are finally home. To be actually using our church, parish centre and

office has been exciting for our community.

To share in our joy and in gratitude for the many blessings we have received, I would like to invite all

members of our school community to attend the official blessing and opening of our new church on the 23rd

September 2018. Bishop Patrick O’Regan will be with us to celebrate Mass at 2pm to commemorate this new

beginning as a parish family. We also invite you to join in the fellowship after Mass and meet other families and

parishioners.

I would also like to acknowledge the generous contribution of many parishioners and school families

who have enabled this significant change in the life of our parish.

Fr. Brendan

If your child/ children would like to be apart of this special celebration, (forming a guard of honour at the conclusion

of Mass) could you please let myself or the the office know.

August 20 -24, 2018

This year the Diocese of Sale will be celebrating Family Week during August. Family Week encourages students to reflect on their own

families and the church family; focusing on the role family plays in enriching and supporting each one of us in our personal growth and goals; and what it means to be part of a caring family. At Trinity, we value the support of all our families

and would love to acknowledge each family and the wonderful work they do raising their children. On Thursday 23rd August, we will be celebrating Book Week with our dress up and activities day.

This year’s Book Week theme is “Find Your Treasure”. In families, one thing that we treasure

is the wonderful memories that we create together, whether it be going on a holiday, a new pet, birthdays or just a trip to the park. We would like to create some of these special memories at

school by warmly inviting you all to join in the Book Week activities that will be taking place in

the classrooms on this day. We would also like to create a “memories” wall in the atrium and invite all families to share a special memory (photo, text

or drawing) with us on the template sent home last week (also in this newsletter). Once you have completed it, could you please return it to school.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:41-51

Reflection:

Jesus never promised that belief in God and reliance on God’s providence would free us from problems and

discouragement. He did assure us that God would always be present to strengthen and uphold us. Just as the food God sent Elijah enabled him to continue his journey, so the Bread Jesus gives us will enable us to live forever.

Possible discussion:

What happens to you when you become hungry?

How does it make you feel?

What happens if you have no food to eat?

What do you like about sharing a meal with others?

Jesus tells us that he is living Bread that brings us life.

What happens to us if we are cut off from Jesus, the living bread?

Jesus gives himself to each of us, we are united by his love.

Let us pray that Jesus, the living Bread, will be at the centre of our lives this week in all we say and do.

CONFIRMATION Please keep our Confirmation students in your prayers

this week as they prepare to take the next important step in their faith development. The Confirmation celebrations will take place on Thursday night, Saturday and Sunday.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING - TEACHER REPORT

FOUNDATION This term in English we have been using our persuasive writing techniques to convince others to agree with our ideas. We have been working on finding reasons and points to back our ideas prior to writing and have found that they strengthen our arguments. In mathematics we have been exploring the concept of sharing. This has been a very hands on unit with lots of tangible materials being used. We will be finishing the unit at the end of the week and will be looking forward to beginning our measurement unit in Week 5. In religion we have been learning about Mary MacKillop and the contributions that she has made. We have also been deepening our understanding of prayer and have begun writing our own and sharing them during prayer time. In inquiry we have been exploring the people, services and groups that make up our community.

LEVEL 1 Term 3 has been full of hands on learning experiences using fairy tales to inspire us. We have been exploring traditional fairy tales and how we can fracture them to make them even more exciting and engaging. In Mathematics we have been focussing on measurement, including measuring Rapunzel’s hair, finding how much porridge is in the three bears bowls and how heavy the items in Red Riding Hood’s basket are. We have been looking at materials and used our knowledge to design and build a new house for a little pig. In Religion we have been learning Jesus’ life and teachings by exploring a variety of Bible stories.

LEVEL 2 In Religion, we have been learning about Jesus' life and teachings through exploring many Bible stories. We continue to make connections to Jesus' teachings by discussing how these actions can be incorporated into our daily lives. In Writing, we have been exploring information and persuasive text. In Mathematics, our focus on Measurement has involved working on length, capacity, area and mass. Our Science incursion with Hands On Science was very successful. The session titled Materials & Mixing provided the children with terrific hands on experiences to explore a variety of materials and mixtures. Whole group discussions and small group investigations ensured a very engaging learning experience for the children. Our S.T.E.M activity, which links to our Science focus, involves planning, designing and creating a kite by adhering to the set criteria. Hopefully, we will have a windy day to test our designs when the time comes. We are also looking forward to our Geography incursion later in the Term.

LEVEL 3 The grade three students have settled into term three well. In Religion, they have been strengthening their relationship with Jesus through reading and becoming familiar with the stories of the New Testament. In English, the students have been working on persuasive writing and are looking forward to exploring various types of persuasion in the coming weeks. We have also begun our science unit for term 3, exploring and relationships between the earth, moon and sun. The students are enjoying hands on experiences to learn and understand how we have night and day and how the seasons occur. We are all looking forward to the excursion to science works later in the term to consolidate this learning.

LEVEL 4 Term 3 has already been a busy term for all of us in Grade 4, with all students off to a positive start! We have had the opportunity to develop our connection with Jesus through exploration of scripture passages. This has also allowed us to develop our skills solving new and unknown words as we have found a variety of challenging words throughout the bible. Throughout English we have developed our persuasive

Page 8: T R I N I T Y C A T H O L I C P R I MA R Y S C H O O L N ......T R I N I T Y C A T H O L I C P R I MA R Y S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R P R I N C I P A L — M r S i mo n Del l ’Oro

writing skills by using high modality words and emotive language throughout our writing. We have had the opportunity to write our own scripts using these language techniques to improve the quality of our writing. Mathematics has provided a challenge for all students as we have been able to use our current knowledge of times tables to solve vertical multiplication and long division equations and problems. Earth and Space Sciences has given students the opportunity to experiment and explore the world below our feet. We have continued to deepen our knowledge of Australian history through exploration of the First Fleet and convict encounters.

LEVEL 5 Term 3 has begun and the Grade Fives have been very busy. We had an incursion in week 2 from Hands On Science. The students were given the opportunity to use many different materials to explore how light moves and works. This was a wonderful introduction to our next science unit on Physical Science. In week three we are going to be cooking some healthy fruit muffins to practise healthy food handling habits as part of our Food and Technology unit for health. In English we have been studying the novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. The students have been studying the characters and events of this book. In writing we have been learning about the structure of a biography. We have been writing biographies about our classmates and some famous people such as Mary MacKillop, Rod Laver and Neale Daniher. In maths we have been practising our times tables and learning about sorting numbers into arrays. We have learnt about the factors of numbers. We have been solving maths equations which are 2x1 number such as 37x8 and we have been solving maths equations which are 2x2 numbers such as 56x78. In Religion we have been learning about God’s creation.

LEVEL 6 Term three has begun and the Grade Six students are busy with their learning. In Religion we had been learning about God’s creation. In Science we are currently learning about Physical Science. The students have been completing a research project about renewable energy and how renewable energy is generated. They will be presenting those to their classmates in the weeks to come. In week six, we will be having a Physical Science incursion. The incursion will be focusing on making and learning about electrical circuits. In English we are finishing our class novel “Wonder”. We have also continued with our literacy rotations where we are focusing on developing our comprehension, fluency and decoding skills. In writing the students have been researching and writing biographies on a Saint they have chosen. In Mathematics we have just finished our shape unit and will being our chance unit in the weeks to come. We are also finishing up our multiplication and division unit over the next few weeks. We will then begin our patterns and algebra unit. In Geography we have been focusing on places and interconnections. The students have undertaken and completed a research project around this concept. We will be continuing our Geography unit across the next few weeks. The students are also enjoying participating in their inter-school sports this term. They are doing a fantastic job so far representing Trinity.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Foundation Our tiniest students have been hard at work developing their ability to independently log onto the Chromebooks. It doesn’t seem like much, but they need to understand how the trackpad works, find all the letters and numbers, use special characters like ‘Shift’ and ‘Enter’, and how to power down the Chromebook. Soon, they will use their newly developed skills to create a simple document in their Google Drive. Level 1 Our grade ones are learning to input data into a Google Sheet and create a simple graph/chart with a title, horizontal axis title and a vertical access title. Some of our confident students are turning their charts into 3D charts and changing the colour of

the bars. They are also continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament. Level 2 Our grade two students are learning to input data into a Google Sheet and create a graph/chart with a title, horizontal axis title and vertical access title. All students are learning to increase the readability and aesthetics of their graphs by turning their charts into 3D charts, changing the colour of the bars and the background, and adding data labels. Some of our confident students are attempting to create a graph with two data sets. They are also continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament. Level 3 Our grade three students are learning to collect and input data into a Google Sheets that has multiple data sets. With that data, they create a graph/chart with a title, horizontal axis title and vertical access title. All students are learning to increase the readability and aesthetics of their graphs by turning their charts into 3D charts, changing the colour of the bars and the background, and adding data labels. Some of our confident students are learning to split the data into smaller subsets to create different graphs. They are also continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament. Level 4 Our grade 4 students are using Google Sheets to develop their understanding of formulas by creating a digital version of the multiplication tables. They need to understand how to multiply two cells, duplicate cells and formulas, insert rows and columns, and neatly format their multiplication tables so it is easy to read. Our advanced students are developing ways to quickly develop multiplication tables beyond 12. They are also continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament. Level 5 At Level 5 students have been working on exploring, recognising and explaining how computers represent data using the base two number system. Students can explain how computers use binary to create whole numbers and mathematical methods used to create a greater range of bytes for the storage of data. Students are continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament. Level 6 At Level 6 students are learning to understand how data is represented through algorithms, abstraction and a sequence of instruction using computational thinking. In teams they have solved computational thinking puzzles to determine the cognitive strategy needed to be successful. Students have grown in the understanding that computational thinking is present in all programming and software that they are engaged with. Students are continuing to develop their touch typing skills through Typing Tournament.

From the end of last term till now from the sale of the organic produce, we have so far made a profit of $65. We would like to purchase spring seedlings and succulents for our bathtubs. We would like to thank the support of the Trinity families that are buying the produce from the students. The students are always willing and eager to sell what they reap. SPORT: During weeks one and two (Wednesday to Friday), the students in years 4-6 who have qualified for District Athletics have been practicing their technique and skills in a variety of track and field events. From week three onwards, the students in years 4-6 who will be participating in the upcoming Hoop Time Basketball round robin inter-school competition have been training to develop their basketball skills. Due to the overwhelming number of participants, these training sessions run from Tuesday to Friday. The sport captains have continued to show their leadership skills by assisting during these training sessions. PERFORMING ARTS: The Grade 5’s have been working hard giving up their lunchtimes for their Book Week presentation of Snow White and the Seventeen Dwarfs.

What do classifications on computer games actually mean?

Parents and guardians are the most appropriate people to determine which computer games and movies are the most suitable for their children to see and play. The classification information provided on classified products can assist parents to make that choice. The following three classification categories are advisory categories. This means that there are no legal restrictions about viewing and/or playing these films and computer games with these markings. However, M (Mature) classified films and computer games may include classifiable elements such as violence and nudity of moderate impact that are not recommended for children under 15 years of age. Parents and guardians may need to find out more about film or a computer game’s specific content, before deciding whether the material is suitable for their child. The following website provides parents with further insight into how classifications are created when games and movies are released.

EXTENSION OPPORTUNITIES

National Science Week

The 2018 theme for National Science week, ‘Game Changers and Change Makers’, is focussed on the scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians, designers and innovators of the past and present. Today, scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians, designers and innovators just like those preceding them consider endless scientific and technological possibilities and applications, where game changers and change makers actively ask new questions, make new predictions, experiment with new ideas and reach conclusions that shape and create new discoveries, ideas, and opportunities. Students at Trinity will be exploring the stories and narratives of scientific discoveries, and the inquiries drawn from historical and current day Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematical (STEM) contexts within activities in their classrooms. Speak to your child about what they learnt today in Science!

Science Technology Engineering Mathematics &

Creativity in Research, Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) What is STEM / CREST? STEM & CREST are both an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM & CREST, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking, initiative, communication and digital literacy. Students at Trinity are involved in STEM & CREST learning opportunities through the Discovery Centre. Class teachers research, plan, implement and evaluate STEM & CREST learning opportunities for students encompassing the Victorian Curriculum. These opportunities are integrated in all curriculum areas which is essential in developing key skills and understandings in 21st Century learning. STEM qualifications and skills are in demand and will continue to increase in the future. STEM & CREST empowers students with the skills to succeed and adapt to this changing world.

VISUAL ARTS

Congratulations to the Grade Two’s (staff portraits) whose work has been selected

to be part of the Zart Arts Term Four Student Gallery.

‘At Zart Art we have a students' art gallery which features the artworks of primary and secondary                                 students from around Victoria. The gallery was set up to provide students with an opportunity to have                                 their artworks valued and displayed in a 'real' art gallery. We believe students should learn to appreciate                                 the artworks of their contemporaries and place their own artworks within a wider context. Each term                               the displays are changed so that as many individuals as possible have the opportunity to have their                                 work viewed by others. Students, their parents and teachers are welcome to visit the gallery’- ZartArt

The students artworks are on display from Thursday the 20th Of September - Tuesday the 11th December at the Zart Art Student Gallery at Lexton Road, Box Hill North. Samantha Moss Visual Arts Teacher

● For greater safety and visibility, we are requesting that all drivers reverse park into the marked bays. ● Thank you all who use the pedestrian crossing area. You are demonstrating to your children correct road safety practices.

Once children cross the pedestrian crossing into the parking area, they, for their safety, need to be placed into vehicles promptly. The car park is NOT a meeting area.

● The lane around the edge of the car park (closest to the oval) are for vehicles waiting to pick children up from the Pick-up Zone ONLY.

● The two parking bays closest to the office path are the PICK-UP ZONES. These are NO STANDING zones. If your children are not ready to get into your car as you pull up to the pick-up zone, you must continue on and rejoin the end of the pick-up queue.

● There is NO RIGHT TURN when exiting the car park. All vehicles must turn left for the safety of others and to maintain traffic flow.

● THE GATES CLOSE AT 9.00am AND RE-OPEN AT 3.00pm. Occasionally they might reopen slightly later due to school activities.

● The Staff Car Park is for STAFF PARKING ONLY. Please do not use as a drop off/pick up for students. Thank you for your patience and consideration of others
