1 TRAVEL THE PENNYRILE AREA QUILT TRAIL The Quilt Trail project began in Adams County, Ohio when Donna Sue Groves, field representative for the Ohio Arts Council, painted an 8’ x 8’ quilt square on her barn in honor of her mother, a lifetime quilter. The Adams County Arts Council picked up on the idea, painted 20 squares in their county, and developed a driving tour, which has increased tour- ism. It provided an economic impact in two ways: it attracted tourists to small businesses near the quilt trail; and developed a market for local artisans to sell quilt-related products. The project has spread into other states, including Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas, and Iowa. In Kentucky, the project was spearheaded by Resource Conservation and Development (RC & D) coordinators, working in collaboration with commu- nity groups. The Kentucky Quiltline project in the Pennyrile Area came about as a collaborative effort between the nine RC & D offices, and was aimed at attracting visitors to travel the scenic highways of 68/80, 91, 81, and 62. The project has now spread to farms, barns, businesses, homes, and yards through- out the Pennyrile Area. Not only do the quilt squares add color and beauty to the landscapes, they are an excellent way to preserve and share the historic treasure of quilting and agricul- ture with future generations and visitors alike. This is our first attempt at compiling a list of the quilt squares located in the Pennyrile Area. We apologize if you have been left off, and ask that you contact your local Extension Office if you would like to add your information to this brochure.
