    Contacted NEADS requesting them toidentify AAL11 primary target, to receive analtitude read outfrom their radar system. NE AD S unable to identify target. A dvisedNEADS that theyshould consider launching fighters from ACY, that Otis ANGB m ightnot be able to catch up to the AAL11.

    Primary Radar target lost, conversed with Dan B ueno about radar coverage, aircraftpossibly descended belowour coverage.

    Conversed withDan Bueno about whetherthe fightershad scrambled or not, Dan advisedthat Cape Sector had issued the clearance but didn't believe they were off y et.

    Call from HUNTRESS (Same as NEADS), Sgt. Powell advising us about the fightersfrom Otis ANGB. AdvisingZBW that the fighters should be airborne. AdvisedHUNTRE SS that radar was lost.

    Began numerous discussions witha femaleMajor at NEADS believeto be MajorDeskins on DSIs] | We needed to identify radar target, gave last know npositions 8 NM northeast of JFK, also gaveL/L of last known position.

    TM U U nit notified of an ELT and anaircraft had hit the WTC.

    Discussions in TM U on what aircraft hit the WTC. I believe a call was made to AALoperations to confirm. It was apparent it was AAL11.

    Open TELCO Nat TM U desk discussionabout a UAL175 Hijack or NORDO .

    Bo Dean had entered TM U area. I requested Bo Dean to call UAL operations to find outthe status. I don't believeUAL new thestatus. ASD indicated that UAL 175was over

    NJ. /

    Terry Biggio, theOMIC, issued a ground stop.

    Catted NEAD S on DSN ] [requested to speak with Bill Ayers ADLO . Receivedseveral different numbers to use.

    OMIC advises that theremay be more aircraft involved.

    Bob Jones had entered the TMU Unit and advised Biggio that the tapes indicated andclearly stated that theyan Arabic voicewas heard and stated that they " we have planes,we have more planes", he states again "we are returningto the airport everyone staycalm, we are returning to the airport calm dow n and no one will be injured."

    (I heard this tape several days later, it is very chilling to hear based on the kno wledge ofthe entire ordeal.)(My good friend Pete Zyleskiwas the radar controller workingAAL11.)

    I called Moncton Centre to advise them we were shutting the door, no aircraft couldenterZBW Airspace.

    Open TELCON,or NEADS reportsof an unidentified aircraft approaching ACK,requests ZBW if anyknowledgeon this aircraft.

    Call Giantkiller aboutaircraft south of ACK.

    Open TELO CN , or PVD approach reports of a large whiteaircraft heading towards M VYat 1700 feet MSL. Aircraft approachingfrom the west.

    We get a call on the TELCO N about an Iberian airliner beinghijacked off the coast o fSpain, further research indicates no suchflight exists.

    We get a call on I believe a CO A56 possible H ijackfrom overseas, turnsout to benegative, the aircraft returnedfor maintenance problems.

    Open TELCON anotheraircraft Hijack/Crash p ossibly at Camp David (actually UA L93in Southwest PA).

    Call NEA DS advise of both unknowns.

    Call Giantkiller about slow moving aircraft approaching M VY .

    The first aircraft is determined that it is a Coast Guardaircraft returning to FMH .

    Ginatkiller calls and advises that a fleet of ships or en route towardsthe northeast, and

    mentions an AE GIS C ruiser is on the way.

    All aircraft are requested to land.

    Someone advises us that MVY tower is going to evacuate due to the unknown aircraft.

    Call NEADS to find out status onDAL1889. They advise that theaircraft has begundescent but is heading north awayfrom Cleveland. Advise NEA DS of target west ofMVY.

    TM U conversation we have been advised thatDAL1889 is not a Hijack and is in contact

    of Cleveland AT CTout of 12,000 feet MSL.

    OMIC Action being taken to evacuate Z BW due to a possible airborne threat.

    At the same time a tractor-trailer is parked directly o utside the FAA C enter on Rte 3,State police called to get the truck awayfrom the center.

    ATC ZERO declaredby ZBW OMIC.

    There was some arguing on who was going to stay, and where to evacuate, supposedly abomb scare was called intothe childcarecenter, ou r evacuation point. Con trollers wereadvised to either go to 11 M urphy Driveor the Holiday Inn.

    Ed De Lacy ordered Pete Pasqualeto leave, at this time we honestly felt that we weretargeted and an impact w as imm inent. I was ordered by Ed D e Lacy to leave thebuilding.

    Called Moncton Centre High Level Supervisor and advised that we were going ATCZERO and evacuating the building.

    Called NEADS Battlestaff advise that Boston Center has declared ATC ZERO and thatwe are evacuating the building due to a possible airborne threat. (This was the first time itreally hit me, Ibelieve my voice crackleda little bit on the last call that I made.) (I hatethat I did because I believe underthe greatest duressis when our professionalism shouldbe maintained the most.)

    Advised Terry Biggio,and Ed DeLacey thatI had notified Moncton C entreand NEADSof ATC ZERO and then I left the building.

    Upon leaving the building I saw Nashua SWA T Team in the parking lot with automaticweapons, the FBI running with the audiotapes withBob Jones by their side. Not a visionwe are used to around the center.

    When I left it just so happens thatmy fiancee works next doorat Unifirst. I couldn'tleave with out at least advising her what was going on and telling her boss so he could

    decide what his company should do. When I went in I told herGM that we were targetedand that an unidentified targetwas en route to the center confirmedby the Region inBurlington, M A. Heevacuated his building.

    It turns out that the target they were concerned with was the Coast Guard target 120 milesaway off the coast of Nantucket. We had already identifiedit. Though we had thoughtthat we had evacuated the building3 or 4 FSDPS personnel wereleft in the basement ofthe buildin g, thereis no paging systemin their office.

    We reentered the building some30 minu tes later,to a desolate Air Traffic ControlCenter. Th at's wh en you realized that nothing would ever be the same. We learned later

    that day that D oug M cKay a controller in Area E had hiswife on boardAAL11. Doughas never returnedto work, not even to visit.
