2012 was a successful year for the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, both in medical and

financial terms. Together we have achieved much and created new avenues of opportunity.

For this we owe a special debt of gratitude to our approximately 13,000 staff members for

their exceptional commitment.

The quality and efficiency of the medical and healthcare services provided by the Charité were

also outstanding in 2012. The Charité earned first place in “Focus” magazine‘s “Germany‘s

Best Hospital” ranking of 2012. Ensuring the very best medical care for our patients is both

a vocation and a calling for our physicians, caregivers and technical staff – day after day

and with tireless dedication. The integration of clinical and research activities proved to be

fruitful again this year: observations made in clinical settings inspired intelligent research,

while innovative research findings were quickly transformed into new therapeutic concepts.

First and foremost, all this was done for the benefit of our patients. The Charité is committed

to actively advancing world-class medicine: our University Clinic unit with its around 7,000

students is one of the largest medical schools of its kind. Inaugurated in 2012 on the historic

Berlin-Mitte campus, our new teaching and research facility CharitéCrossOver unites all basic

disciplines under one roof. The Charité has been exemplary in seeking to purposefully link

academic, research and teaching activities with hands-on training programs, an approach that

now serves as a model for many other university clinics around the country.

Despite difficult framework conditions, the Charité achieved a financial surplus of 5.2 million

euros for the financial year 2012, thereby confirming the organization‘s ongoing consolidation

strategies. While the Charité still faced a 57 million euro deficit in 2008, it has been profitable

since 2011 and continues to improve its science and clinical performance.

Such positive results are a further incentive for us to strengthen and expand these successes.

Over the years to come we will continue to work together to promote Berlin as an excellent

location for research, and we will support the healthcare industry in the Berlin-Brandenburg

region in its mission to achieve world-class status.

The Charité – Stronger than ever

2012 was indeed a successful and eventful year for Charité –

Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Our University Hospital was able

to further improve its position as one of Germany‘s highest

performing and renowned medical centers, while continuing

to demonstrate world-class excellence in numerous aspects

of health and medical care services, research, professional

training and networking. For the second time, Charité has

again achieved a positive annual result, translating into

a profit of 5.2 million euros for 2012. The year was also

characterized by our winning of the top hospital ranking

awarded by “Focus” magazine, in addition to successes in

the national Excellence Initiative. Examples of successful

endeavors at Charité last year include good progress in

construction projects, newly inaugurated facilities, and

numerous public and professional events.

Focus Magazine RankingCharité provides first-rate medical care to its patients. This

fact was underscored yet again by “Focus” magazine‘s ran-

king of German medical facilities: Charité won first place

among approximately 1,500 hospitals around the count-

ry, well ahead of the second-place contender. The survey

assessed responses from roughly 18,000 physicians on

the basis of their hospital recommendations and hospi-

tal quality assessment reports. The study also compared

the technical equipment at the various facilities, available

treatment options, as well as the safety and satisfaction

of patients and staff.

The Excellence Initiative Awards Support for Three Projects The results of the second phase of the “Excellence Initiative

of the federal and state governments” published in June

were indeed very positive for Charité as a whole. In no less

than three categories, the Charité will now be able to expand

several top medical and university research projects: the

ongoing excellence cluster NeuroCure, in addition to financial

support for two graduate schools until 2017, i.e. the Ber-

lin School of Integrative Oncology and Berlin-Brandenburg

School for Regenerative Therapies. This success was made

possible through innovative ideas, hard work, and outstan-

ding cooperation between the many Charité scholars and

scientists, and their counterparts in the various universities

and extramural research facilities.

CharitéCrossOver Officially InauguratedThe inauguration of the new teaching and research building

of the Faculty of Medicine was celebrated in October in the

presence of around 600 representatives from the spheres

of science, business and industry, culture, as well as from

the federal and state governments. The modern building

located on the historic Charité Mitte Campus now brings

together under one roof the excellence cluster NeuroCure,

various educational facilities, and the basic academic sub-

jects of the Faculty of Medicine. Previously, the Institutes

of Neurophysiology, Medical Physics, Vegetative Physiolo-

gy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell

Biology and Neurobiology, and Physiology were scattered

all over Berlin in 13 different locations. We have achieved

a unique campus atmosphere by uniting these institutes

in a single facility, thereby purposefully promoting scien-

tific exchange between many of the smartest minds from

academia, research and teaching. These clearly improved

framework conditions will advance the Charité‘s research

initiatives and expand innovative teaching approaches.

Green Light for the Berlin Institute of HealthAfter receiving approval from the federal and Berlin govern-

ments, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) project can now

be officially initiated. This ambitious merger of the Charité

and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC)

aims to combine the strengths of both partners in the areas

of basic and patient-oriented research, as well as to attract

top scientists and promising young physicians from around

the world to this internationally prominent center of medi-

cal research excellence.

Another Year of Excellence in Medicine

A Solid Foundation for a Secure FutureFurther major steps forward were taken in 2012 with respect

to planned construction and renovation projects. Four of

these numerous projects should be mentioned here:

The most important collaborative project between Charité

and Vivantes is now taking shape. In February, the corner-

stone was laid on the Virchow Hospital Campus for the

Labor Berlin - Charité Vivantes GmbH building. This major

hospital laboratory center – the largest of its kind in Europe

– will provide high-performance diagnostics for more than

10,000 hospital beds in Berlin and surrounding areas, yet

another impressive success story.

The results of the architectural competition to redesign

the main hospital tower on Luisenstrasse on the Charité

Mitte Campus were quite impressive. The jury selected the

design proposed by Schweger Architects in Hamburg. The

82-meter-high hospital building features a white facade with

brick-red base. This distinct Charité structure will continue

to dominate Berlin‘s skyline and serve as a model for suc-

cessful urban renewal schemes. All 18 submitted designs

were displayed in a public exhibition.

The demolition of the health care center on the Mitte cam-

pus built in the 1980s has now made way for the new Charité

Campus Hospital, which was completed in the summer of

2013. Most of the clinics in the hospital tower will move to

this facility until the renovation work is completed. The

Campus Hospital provides space for 339 patients.

Hospital Block I on the Benjamin Franklin Campus is a modern

and user-friendly medical center: in late 2012 the building‘s

water and sewer lines were refurbished and handicapped-

accessible baths and additional sanitary facilities were ins-

talled. 3,320 linear meters of pipelines were replaced.

National Scholarships for 68 Students

Last year again, the coveted national scholarships (Deutsch-

landstipendium) were awarded to select students in the

fields of human medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine

and health science education. The grantees receive support

in the amount of 500 euros per month for at least two se-

mesters. This scholarship program is funded equally by the

federal government and by private sponsors. In 2012, the

Charité attracted the maximum amount of grant funding

and was able to award scholarships to a total of 68 students.

“Long Night of Sciences” Draws Large CrowdsIn June, for the first time Charité organized the opening

ceremony for the “Long Night of Sciences” on its historic

Mitte campus. More than 184,000 visitors saw this ‘smartest

night of the year’ as an opportunity for a behind-the-scenes

look at Berlin‘s 73 academic and science institutions. With

more than 6,000 guests that night, the Charité was one

of the most visited venues. All three Charité campuses

presented colorful programs including information booths,

guided tours to laboratories and clinical facilities, as well

as lectures for young and old. The Charité has now suc-

cessfully participated in this popular event format for the

twelfth year in a row.

ProfitabilityThree hundred years after its founding, Charité – Univer-

sitätsmedizin Berlin now comprises more than 100 medi-

cal facilities and institutes distributed across four separate

campuses: Benjamin Franklin Campus, Berlin Buch Campus,

Charité Mitte Campus and Virchow Hospital Campus. A total

of approximately 13,200 staff members are employed in

the areas of medical care, research and academics, service,

administration and external funding. This makes the Charité

one of the largest employers in the German capital.

With an overall turnover exceeding 1.4 billion euros and more

than 140,000 inpatient and 615,000 outpatient cases, the

Charité achieved revenues amounting to 801.4 million euros

for the 2012 reporting period. This breaks down to 713.4

million euros of revenues from inpatient care, 55.2 million

euros from outpatient care services, and charges for elective

procedures and fees for medical facilities used by private doc-

tors in the overall amount of 32.7 million euros. The Charité

received grants and allocations from the State of Berlin in

the amount of 191.7 million euros. Other operating income

amounted to 345.8 million euros.

Staffing costs were the largest single expenditure item

amounting to 741.4 million euros in 2012 and corresponding

to an increase of 36.1 million euros when compared with the

previous year. This item was offset by 26.2 million euros in

revenues generated by staff provided by Charité CFM Facility

Management GmbH (CFM). The cost of materials rose by

19.7 million euros in 2012 to a total of 370.4 million euros.

Other operating expenses amounted to 184.4 million euros,

including 66.0 million euros for maintenance needs.

Net earnings amounted to 5.2 million euros for the overall

2012 reporting period, despite 118 fewer beds in this fiscal

year. As a result, the Charité has again surpassed its ambi-

tious economic objectives, thereby ensuring a sustainable

fiscal consolidation of the losses incurred in the years prior

to 2011. The annual net profit will be used to strengthen

liquidity. This improvement in Charité‘s economic under-

pinning was made possible by the hard work of our staff in

furthering Charité‘s economic reform process, which in turn

facilitated the implementation of an extensive portfolio of

improvements in structural efficiency. Based on this success-

ful package of measures, we were able to balance and even

overcompensate for these losses, despite a further increase

in expenditures due to tariff agreements and inflationary

effects occurring during the financial year.

InvestmentsOver the course of the 2012 financial year the Charité inves-

ted a total of approximately 81.3 million euros in both tangible

and intangible assets. A major portion of these investments

was financed by the State of Berlin in the form of subsidies

for health services and research and teaching; the regular

investment subsidies of the State of Berlin amounted to 33.7

million euros.

Human ResourcesThe Charité saw a slight increase in the number of its active

full-time staff during the 2012 financial year. On average,

9,720 active full-time staff were employed during 2012. Six

full-time staff were added to the workforce in 2012. More-

over, an average of 1,617 full-time staff were financed from

external funding sources.
