LESSON 1
ORIGIN OF SICKNESSES
SATAN THE AUTHOR OF REBELLION IN HEAVEN:
“How are you fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, Son of the morning! How you
are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to
Heaven; I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit upon the mount of
assembly in the uttermost north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will
make myself like the Most High.”
FELL LIKE LIGHTNING FROM HEAVEN:
Jesus told His disciples of His memory concerning Lucifer’s (Satan’s)
rebellion: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven.” This event gives us a true
contrast between the power of God and the power of Satan.
SATAN THE AUTHOR OF SIN, SICKNESS, DEATH:
Jesus said, “He (Satan) is the author of sin, sickness, and death.” In other
words, these evil attributes did not exist until the rebellion of Heaven and the
successful temptation by Satan in the Garden of Eden.
MOTIVE OF SATAN:
Jesus gave the contrast between Himself and Satan: “The thief comes only to
4
steal, kill, and destroy: I have come that they (mankind) might have life and that they
might have it more abundantly.”
Satan’s motive concerning every man, woman boy, and girl is to keep them
from coming to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. If he fails to accomplish this,
he will then send his agents to attempt, on every hand, to restrain them from
becoming what God intended and to restrain them from doing that which God
purposed for them.
TYPES OF SICKNESSES:
· Physical sicknesses are attacks on the health of the bodies of men and
women, designed to rob them of that which God intended.
· Mental sicknesses are a category of sickness that can range from mental
incapacity to simply wrong thinking. God said to His Old Covenant people,
“My thoughts are higher than yours.” He was saying, “You don’t think like I
think.” Most Christians need healing of the mind because they have never
submitted their minds to the Word of God. The Word of God reveals the
thoughts of God and the intention of God for His people.
· Emotional sickness—Emotions generally have a habit of acting and feeling
in whatever manner in which they are accustomed. They (emotions) always
want to go their own way. Our lives and relationships are too important to
allow our emotions to dictate to us how we react to God and to those whom
we love. Therefore, emotions must be dealt with aggressively, that is, they
must be reined in—much like the reins on a wild stallion. They must not be
allowed to run free. Emotional sickness can be caused by hurts, rejections,
and disappointments that lead to discouragement and oppression by the agents
of Satan.
GOOD NEWS:
God has a plan of healing for every type of sickness, disease, and pain.

LESSON 2
PATTERNS IN SCRIPTURE
PASSOVER EXPERIENCE FOR THE HEBREWS:
The Hebrews had been slaves to the Egyptian empire for 400 years. God sent
a deliverer to them—a man named Moses.
There was not one person in the company of Hebrews that left Egypt who was
sick or even weak. The blood that was applied to the door-post delivered the
Hebrews from the oppression of the Egyptians, but it was the flesh of the sacrificial
lamb that appropriated health and wholeness physically for the Hebrews.
Years later, the Hebrews are still wandering around in the wilderness,
murmuring—complaining. At one point in time, serpents appeared all around the
Hebrews. Many were bitten and in danger of dying. Moses was instructed by God to
fashion a serpent from brass and erect it on a pole so that all could see it. His
instruction then to those who were bitten was simply to look at the serpent and they
would be healed.
The above Old Covenant example is a type or shadow of the healing that is
offered to New Covenant believers who would look to Jesus, Who would Himself
be lifted up on a cross. John 3:14-16
HEALING THROUGH THE PROPHETS:
The leper who came to the prophet was instructed to go to the Jordan River
and dip himself seven times.
The dead man whose body was thrown into a grave where the prophet had
been buried. When his body touched the bones of the dead prophet, the dead man
came alive. This is a testimony to the power of anointing that rested on the
prophets. 2 Kings 13:20-21
6
Elijah breathing on the dead Child
“Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the
house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was not breath left in
him…And Elijah said to her, ‘Give me your son.’ So he took him out of her arms
and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own
bed…And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord
and said, ‘O Lord, my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him’. Then the
Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came back to him, and he
revived.” 1 Kings 17:17-22
You and I have a better relationship with God through Jesus than did Elijah.
We have a better covenant with better promises. Why not meditate on the healings
and miracles that others have ministered through faith in God?
ANOINTED MUSIC DRIVES OPPRESSION AWAY:
David, the shepherd boy, would be called to come to the palace of the demon-
infested King, Saul, to play the harp for him. The anointed music would silence the
demons and drive away the oppression from the King.
JESUS BROUGHT HEALING TO ALL:
Acts 10:38— “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and
with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the
devil, for God was with Him.
2 Peter 2:24— “…and by His stripes (wounds) we were healed.” Please
notice that this is in the past tense. This means that Peter, by the Holy Spirit, was
looking back to the cross—the sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus took every sickness and every
disease and every pain, so that we would not have to bear any sickness—any
disease—any pain.
I often ask myself, when I start feeling ill, “why am I putting up with this
illness? Jesus has already been sick with this very illness. I cast it from my body in
the Name of Jesus.”
JESUS PASSES THE BATON TO BELIEVERS:
Jesus declared, “These signs shall follow those who believe—they shall cast
out demons…they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover…”
God has anointed believers with the Holy Spirit and with power. In addition,
we have been given the right (authority) to use the Name of Jesus. After Peter and
7
John had been anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, they said to the lame
man, “silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I to you—in the Name of
Jesus rise up and walk.” The man leaped to his feet and went walking and leaping
and praising God.
We, as believers, have been anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power
also. We, also, have been given the authority to use the Name of Jesus to cast out
demons and to lay hands on the sick and see them recover.
8
LESSON 3
GOD’S HEALING PLANS WAYS IN WHICH HEALING OCCURS:
1. God’s prescription for healing: “Proverbs 4:20-22
• Give attention to my words;
• Incline your ear to my sayings;
• Do not let them depart from your eyes;
• Keep them in the midst of your heart.
For they are life to those who find them;
They are health to all their flesh.
2. The basis for healing:
• Isaiah 53:5 But He was bruised for our iniquities;
• The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
• And by His stripes, we are healed.
• I Peter 2:24 Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we,
having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you
were healed.
Jesus became our substitute, in that he identified and even experienced every
sin and sickness and weakness that we could ever have. This is the plan of God—
that He would put upon Jesus all of our sins and all of our diseases and all of our
pains. We do not receive healing because of our goodness or because of our good
deeds. We receive healing because we simply believe His Word and thank God for
the healing.
9
3. Healing through deliverance:
• On occasion, Jesus expelled the “spirit of infirmity” from individuals. In
these cases, an agent of Satan had attacked an individual with a specific
sickness and the healing required that the demon is expelled. When the
demon had been expelled, the sickness was gone also.
• On a personal note: In a “healing clinic” that I was teaching, a woman
came at the end of the service for prayer for healing. She complained of a
constant pain in her shoulder. The Holy Spirit spoke to me, indicating that
it was a spirit of infirmity. I asked her, “whom do you need to forgive?”
She began to weep and named the person toward whom she had
unforgiveness. She forgave the person in the Name of Jesus, on the basis
that Jesus had taken the offense so that she would not have to bear it.
Immediately, the pain left. The spirit of infirmity no longer had a right to
be there, so he had to leave and take the pain with him.
4. GIFTS OF HEALINGS:
• When the gift of healings is present, the gift of faith will also be present.
God gives extraordinary faith to the believer who operates in a specific
area of healing. Often times the gift of healings will be directed through a
believer for a specific type of sickness or disease.
• For a period of time, in a certain Church, we had all of the ingredients for
healing and miracles. There was a real spirit of praise in all of the services.
There were believers present who were committed to the ministry of
healing. The Holy Spirit orchestrated the happenings. When the sick and
diseased came for healing, believers came also, ready to minister. As the
believers laid hands on the sick, I declared that the Name of Jesus was
above every name, including the name of cancer. At that moment, all of
the ingredients needed came together, and healings occurred. Over a period
of time, it seemed that every cancer patient received complete deliverance,
as confirmed by the medical community. The GIFT of HEALING was
definitely present. It was accompanied by the GIFT of FAITH.
5. Healing through the Gift of Faith:
• The gift of faith works together with the gift of healing and the working of
miracles. This operation of the Holy Spirit is similar to the gift of tongues
(other languages) working with the interpretation of tongues (other
languages).
10
• God allows for signs to follow those who believe. In order to help us to
achieve the ministry of healing and the working of miracles, God gives to
us, through the Holy Spirit, the gift of faith. This is extraordinary faith.
God gives us His own faith. That should be explosive knowledge for you.
6. Healing through Special Miracles:
• Aprons and handkerchiefs were taken from the body of Paul and
administered to the sick and diseased as God wrought special miracles at
the hand of Paul. There are, evidently, normal miracles and special
miracles. In other words, there are degrees of miracles. There have been a
few through the ages who seemed to have an unusual anointing for special
miracles: Paul; Peter; E W Kenyon; John Lake; Kathyrn Kuhlman; Oral
Roberts. Now the number of believers who seem to have that unusual
anointing is growing rapidly around the world. Glory be to God in the
highest.
CONCLUSION:
It is always God’s will to heal. However, not everyone is healed in the same
manner. God has a plan of healing for every individual.
The anointing breaks the yoke, including the yoke of sickness, disease, and
pain.
11
LESSON 4
TYPES OF HEALING
GRACE/FAITH CONNECTION: BY GRACE:
“We are saved (sozo) by grace through faith, and that is not of yourselves, it
is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Grace is God’s part. Faith is our part. Every work of grace is finished—
done—past tense. The provision for healing is done—finished. The provision for
removing our sins is done—finished. The provision for our deliverance is done—
finished. The provision for our sufficiency is done—finished. The provision for our
protection/safety is done—finished.
THROUGH FAITH:
God requires us to have faith. It is impossible to please God without faith.
Whatever is not of faith is a sin. However, for each thing that God requires of us, He
covers our lack by giving us His own nature—His love—His holiness—His faith.
So we use the measure of faith that God gives to us to believe in His promises to us.
Sozo—Greek word—Strong’s #4982—meaning to save; protect; heal; make
whole; deliver.
Every spiritual blessing and every spiritual experience is by grace through
faith. God’s part is providing all that we need by His grace. Grace is God’s finished
work for us. Grace is God’s part. Our part is to believe—to have faith—specifically
to have faith in His promises.
TYPES OF HEALING:
1.Healing from sin:
God put our sins upon Jesus. Hebrews records that in the Old Covenant the
12
sins of the people were merely covered by animal sacrifices. Their sins were pushed
forward year by year, depending upon a Savior coming to redeem their “credit-
notes”. However, in the New Covenant, Jesus died once for all the sins of all the
people. His sacrifice, which was the shedding of His own blood, eradicated sins—
took them away—erased them.
2.Healing from sin nature:
We in the human race (Adamic race) inherited from Adam a sin nature. When
Adam sinned, everyone sinned. He passed on his sin nature to every generation.
However, Jesus came and not only paid the price for the sins we commit but also
identified with our sin nature. “God made Him (Jesus) Who knew no sin, to be sin,
so that we might be the righteousness of God in Christ.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
Therefore, we who come to God through Christ, receive the gift of righteousness,
because Jesus became SIN. SIN singular causes us to commit sins (plural). If God
had not taken care of our sin nature, we would continually be committing sins
(plural).
3.Healing from sickness and disease:
Isaiah 53:5“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. The
chastisement of our peace was upon Him and with His stripes (wounds) we are
healed.”
The verb appears in the Greek language as past tense.
1 Peter 2:24— Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were
healed. Again, as in the above Scripture, the verb appears in the Greek language as
past tense. The healing of sickness and disease is past tense.
Legally, every sickness and every disease has already been healed. Jesus took
every sickness and every disease so that we would not have to carry them. So, if He
has already carried the sickness or disease that you or someone in your family is
carrying, why are you or your family member still carrying it? This question will be
handled in a later lesson in this Bible Course.
4.Healing from the curse:
Deuteronomy, chapter 28, is the blessings and curses chapter. There are 14
verses that describe the blessings of God. There are 54 verses that describe the curses
of God. The good news is that, in the New Covenant, God sent Jesus to be the curse
for us. Galatians 3:13— “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having
become a curse for us that it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’,
13
that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we
might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Genesis 24:1— “Now
Abraham was old, well advanced in age, and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all
things.” Jesus became the curse for us so that we could be blessed in all things
5.Healing from loneliness:
When God made Jesus to be sin, the unique fellowship that Jesus had enjoyed
with His Heavenly Father was cut off. Jesus had declared that His very life was His
union with the Father. Suddenly, He was cut off from the Father. This was the price
that He had to pay because He was our substitute. He took our place. So, Jesus was
alone on the cross. He was lonelier than anyone had ever been. He cried out, “Father,
why have you forsaken Me?”
He died alone. His body was placed in a tomb, but His spirit and soul went to
Hades, the place of the dead. Peter, in his sermon on the Day of Pentecost, revealed
to us that the prophetic Psalm was speaking of Jesus, Who would cry out from Hades,
“You will not leave My soul in Hades, neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to
see corruption.” Acts 2:27 Other Psalms: You have laid Me in the lowest pit. Terror
and darkness are my constant companions. Will there be a resurrection in the
morning?” Psalms 88
6.Healing from rejection:
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with
grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed
him not.” Isaiah 53:3
7.Healing from insufficiency:
2 Corinthians 9:8— “And God is able to make all (every) grace abound to
you, so that you, having all sufficiency in all things, at all times, may abound to all
good works.”
8.Healing from poverty:
“2 Corinthians 8:9— “And we know the grace of our Lord, in that, though
He was rich, for our sake He became poor, so that we, through His poverty might be
rich.”
9.Healing from spiritual death:
“Therefore, if anyone be in Christ, He is a new creation. Old things are passed
away. All things are new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 This is the new birth. “You, who were
dead in trespasses and sins, has He made alive. (Trespasses and sins) in which you
once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the
14
power of the air; the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom
also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires
of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
Ephesians 2:1-2, 4-5
10.Healing from physical death:
Jesus changed physical death for the Christian by going to Hades and leading
captivity captive: He died alone. His body was placed in a tomb, but His spirit and
soul went to Hades, the place of the dead. Peter, in his sermon on the Day of
Pentecost, revealed to us that the prophetic Psalm was speaking of Jesus, Who would
cry out from Hades because Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt Thou
suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:27 Other Psalms: You have laid
Me in the lowest pit. Terror and darkness are my constant companions. Will there
be a resurrection in the morning?” Psalms 88
Jesus had given the sign of Jonah, “For as Jonah was three days and three
nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three
nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40 This verse indicates that Hades, the
place of the dead, was in the heart (core) of the earth.
“Therefore He says: ‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive,
and gave gifts to men.’ Now this, ‘He ascended’—what does it mean but that He
also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the
One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all
things.” Ephesians 4:8-10
CONCLUSION:
God’s intention for you is that you abide in His health and His prosperity. He
made a covenant with you to prove that intention. He signed the covenant with the
blood of His Own Son.
In the Name of Jesus—BE WELL—BE WHOLE—BE BLESSED!
15
LESSON 5
DELIVERANCE FROM OPPRESSION BASIS FOR DELIVERANCE:
• 1.“For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God
unto salvation to every one who believeth, to the Jew first and also to the
Greek.” Romans 1:16
• 2. “How God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went
about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God
was with Him.” Acts 10:38
• 3.“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast
out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” Mark 16:17
THE GOSPEL:
The “Sword of the Spirit” which is the Word of God, was used by Jesus to
drive Satan and his temptations away. For each temptation, Jesus quoted a Scripture
and used it as a weapon against Satan. In the same manner, we, as believers, use the
Scripture as a weapon to drive away temptations, to drive away depression, to drive
away oppression, and to eliminate the attacks from the enemy.
PERSONALIZE THE WORD:
In order to activate the weapon, the Word of God, one must use the mouth or
one’s voice. As an individual personalizes the Word of God by confessing or
testifying to the “exceedingly great and precious promises”, he/she “escape the
corruption that is in the world”. “According as his divine power hath given unto us
all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that
hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and
16
precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having
escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
2 Peter 1:3-4 An individual personalizes the Word of God by simply inserting
his/her name into the Scriptures. Example: “God made Him (Jesus) to be sin, so that
[Bill Patterson] could be the righteousness of God in Christ.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
DELIVERANCE THROUGH BELIEVERS:
“And these signs shall follow those who believe: In my name, they will cast
out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall lay hands on the sick and
they shall recover.”
Believers will use the Name of Jesus and cast out demons, delivering
individuals from the oppression of the devil, in the same manner, that Jesus did. No
one cast out demons until Jesus came to Earth. After He was filled with the Holy
Spirit and power, He cast out demons on a regular basis. He passed on this ministry
to those who believe.
DELIVERANCE THROUGH PRAISE:
PRAISE ACTIVATES THE WEAPON OF THE NAME OF JESUS:
Psalms 8:1-3: “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the Earth!
You have set Your glory above the Heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and
unweaned infants, You have established strength because of Your foes (enemies),
that You might silence the enemy and the avenger.”
PLEASE NOTE:
• The Psalmist was speaking about the Name of the Lord;
• God established a special strength for His children;
• The strength that God established was so powerful that it silences the enemy;
• God’s people need to discover this source of strength.
Matthew 21:15-16 records the event that involved the children in the porches
and courts of the temple crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David”. The chief priests
and the scribes were indignant toward Jesus, and said to Him, “Do you hear what
these are saying?” And Jesus replied to them, “Yes, have you never read, ‘Out of the
mouths of children and infants You have perfected praise’?”
17
Jesus was not merely quoting the Psalm; He was giving a revelation—
identifying the source of strength that silences the enemy—namely praise that
glorifies or lifts up the Name of Jesus.
Summary—Psalms 8; Matthew 21:15-16:
• The Psalmist was singing about the Name of the Lord;
• The source of strength was praise toward the name of the Lord.
• When believers (God’s children) praise the Name of the Lord, the enemy
is silenced;
• The enemy who is the accuser of the brethren needs to be silenced;
• In this type of atmosphere, miracles often happen, because faith is not
contaminated or diluted by thoughts of unbelief or unworthiness that come
from the enemy [because he is silenced].
18
LESSON 6
HEALING FOR THE SPIRIT OF
MAN THE DEATH WITHIN ADAM:
When Adam sinned in the Garden, he removed himself from the meaningful
fellowship that he had enjoyed with God. God had restricted him from eating of the
Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil that was in the Garden of Eden. God had told
him, “The day in which you eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, you
will surely die.” When Adam disobeyed God and ate of that tree, he died in his spirit.
His nature was changed from righteousness to a sin nature. His entire life was
changed that day. Genesis 2:16-17
THE NEW BIRTH EXPERIENCE:
John 20:22 “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto
them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
REMINDER:
While on the cross, Jesus, who knew no sin, was made to be SIN, so that we
might be the righteousness of God in Christ. (II Corinthians 5:21) God, in His plan
for us, required Jesus, our representative, and sacrifice, to take on the sin nature of
mankind. Because of this, Jesus also had to be changed at some point in His spirit.
The sin nature would have to be changed to righteousness. This change took place
at the exact time that Jesus had fulfilled all of the requirements of God the Father, in
order that man could be redeemed and restored to the place that God intended. This
“change” is referred to in the Word as “you must be born again”. Jesus was the
sinless, spotless, Lamb of God, who never needed spiritual redemption. When Jesus
had finished the assignment of completing all that the PERFECT JUSTICE of God
19
required, God raised Him (Jesus) in His spirit. This is the new birth. Jesus, as our
representative, was the first to experience the “new birth”. The Word declares that
Jesus was the “first-born of many brethren”. For whom He foreknew, He also
predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the
firstborn among many brethren. (Romans 8:29)
The disciples of Jesus also had to experience the “new birth”. I believe that
this occurred when Jesus breathed on them and said, “RECEIVE THE HOLY
SPIRIT”. At this point the disciples received spiritual life—they “came alive in
their spirits”
NECESSITY OF THE NEW BIRTH EXPERIENCE:
Nicodemus asked Jesus “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied,
“you must be born again”.
“And you, who were dead in trespasses and sins has He quickened, (made alive)
…” Ephesians 2:1 This is the New Birth (being born again).
SPIRIT—THE REAL YOU:
When Adam disobeyed God’s instruction concerning the “Tree of Knowledge
of Good and Evil”, his spirit died within him. We inherited this spiritual death from
Adam. Because of this spiritual fact, Jesus had to come and cut off this inheritance
from Adam. He became the “Last Adam”, thereby cutting off the inheritance from
Adam, and issuing a new and blessed inheritance from God through His Son, Jesus.
JESUS WAS THE FIRST-BORN FROM THE DEAD:
1 Timothy 3:16— “…God (Jesus) was manifest in the flesh, justified (made
righteous in the spirit, seen of angels…” Jesus is the first-born from the dead as
having been Himself one of the dead.
Jesus was the first of many brethren. For whom He foreknew, He also
predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the
firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:29
HOW CAN ANYONE BE BORN AGAIN?
Anyone can be born again (saved) by making Jesus the Savior and Lord. This
takes place through belief and confession.
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart
that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (born-again). For with
20
the mouth confession is made and with the heart one believes and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10
PRAYER TO BE BORN AGAIN:
Father God, I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and I believe in my heart
that You raised Him from the dead. I ask You to be my God and I ask You, Jesus, to
be my Savior and my Lord. I thank You for loving me and coming to Earth to die in
my place. I receive You now as my Savior—in the Name of Jesus, my Lord, I pray.
Amen.
21
LESSON 7
HEALING FOR THE MIND SOUL
Psuche— (Greek word)—soul—Strong’s # 5590=mind, will, and emotions.
Whereas the spirit of man must be born again, the soul of man must be
transformed or radically changed. To accomplish this, the mind must be renewed,
the will must conform to the will of God, and the emotions must be retrained.
MIND
Romans 12:2: “Be not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind, so that you may be able to prove the good, the acceptable,
and the perfect will of God.”
God said, “My thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my ways.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways,
and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
God is saying, “You don’t think like I think. Our thoughts are incompatible.
You need to change the way that you think. In order to change your thinking, you
must submit your mind to my Word.”
The mind has been called by many Bible teachers a battlefield. “For though
we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our
warfare are not carnal (earthly), but mighty in God:” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
22
• Pulling down strongholds (of the enemy);
• Casting down imaginations;
• Casting down reasoning;
• Bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
Thoughts, reasoning, and imaginations are produced by the mind. This is the
area where most of the battles with the enemy of believers take place.
The mighty weapons are:
• The Word of God; God’s Word is powerful and alive, teaching men/women
how to live.
• The Name of Jesus; The Name of Jesus is higher than any other name.
• The Blood of Jesus—The Eternal offering for sins and the sin nature.
The mighty spiritual weapons are the only weapons available that deal
effectively with imaginations, reasoning, wrong thoughts, fears, depression, and
every strategy that the enemy brings against individuals.
The weapons are launched (activated) by:
• Prayer; Believers pray in the Name of Jesus; believers pray using promises
found in the Word.
• Praise: Believers praise the Name of Jesus, which drives the enemy away.
• Teaching; Pastors and teachers teach the Word of God, equipping believers
to have victory over the enemy.
• Confession or testimony—Believers confess what the Word promises to
them; believers confess what the Word declares that the Blood of Jesus has
done for them.
Please note that the mouth or the voice is used to activate each of the weapons
for use against the enemy.
EMOTIONS:
The experience of the new birth does not save or sanctify the mind or the
emotions. The emotions, as with the thought life, must be submitted to the process
of sanctification, that is, speaking the Word of God to the thoughts and emotions of
one’s soul. The emotions have been accustomed to “going their own way”, and must
23
be retrained, reigned in. The relationships and Christian service of the Christian are
too important to be determined by the emotions. The believer must not allow his/her
emotions to dictate how he/she lives or responds to others.
THE WILL:
The Bible gives us the example of Jesus as He prayed in the garden just before
His arrest, trial, and crucifixion. He prayed “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup
away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:42
Knowing full well exactly what He was facing, Jesus went through the
difficulty of conforming His will to the will of the Father. Christians will have many
opportunities in their life and service to the Lord to do the same, that is, to conform
to the will of God.
BODY:
Soma— (Greek word)—body—Strong’s # 4983
BODY=EARTHLY HOUSE:
Your body is your house in which the “real you” lives while on Earth. For the
Christian, when his or her earthly house (body) dies, the real person (his or her spirit
and soul) immediately moves into the visible presence of God.
2 Corinthians 5:1: “For we know that if the tent which is our earthly home
is destroyed, we have from God a building, a house not made with hands, eternal in
the heavens.”
2 Corinthians 5:6-8: “So we are always confident, knowing that while we
are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by
sight. We are confident, yes well pleased, rather to be absent from the body and to
be present with the Lord.”

LESSON 8
HEALING FOR THE EMOTIONS
COMMON CAUSES FOR EMOTIONAL TURMOIL
FEAR:
Fear is defined in the Scriptures as “the spirit of fear.” When you understand
that fear is an agent of Satan that is assigned to steal your faith, your trust in God
and His word from you, you will be more aggressive in being delivered from fear.
WORRY:
Worry comes from an inability to trust God for your life, your finances, your
health, and your family. Satan comes to put doubt and fear into your thought life.
“Be anxious for nothing, (don’t worry), but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; Philippians 4:6
REJECTION SYNDROME:
Christian counselors are working overtime, attempting to take care of all of
the Christians who are suffering from rejection. It is the strategy that is most used
by Satan. Why do you think that is the case? Because it has worked so well for him
and is still working well for him. If Satan can’t keep an individual from accepting
Christ as Savior, then his goal becomes to keep that individual from becoming what
God intended for him/her to become.
25
THE MOST COMMON CAUSES FOR REJECTION:
• ABUSE—VERBAL—PHYSICAL—SEXUAL;
• ABANDONMENT THROUGH ADOPTION, DIVORCE, OR DEATH;
• MISTREATMENT BY PEERS;
• LACK OF SELF ACCEPTANCE;
• GENERATIONAL CURSE
WRONG RESPONSES TO REJECTION:
• HURT
• ANGER
• FEAR
• INSECURITY
• WRONG THOUGHTS
• DISCOURAGEMENT
• DEPRESSION
• REBELLION
WRONG ADJUSTMENTS:
• SEEK ACCEPTANCE IN WRONG WAYS;
• FANTASIZE;
• PERFECTIONISM;
• WORKAHOLIC;
• FOCUS ON MATERIAL THINGS.
CONSEQUENCES OF WRONG ADJUSTMENTS:
• INFERIORITY COMPLEX;
• LOSS OF IDENTITY;
• SELF REJECTION;
• WRONG TREATMENT FROM PEERS;
• SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.
26
REMEDY FOR REJECTION:
1. CLASSIFY THE WRONG REACTIONS AND WRONG
READJUSTMENTS AS SINS.
Anything, any person, any relationship, any emotion or feeling that keeps you
from being who God intended for you to be or keeps you from doing what God has
called you to do, or keeps you from living as God intended for you to live is SIN.
2. CONFESS THE SIN—CALL IT BY NAME:
REJECTION/HURT/FEAR/FEAR OF FAILURE/DEPRESSION/ETC.
Thank God for the forgiveness and the cleansing that you have received
according to His promise in I John 1:9— “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and
just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
3. FORGIVE ALL THOSE WHO HAVE HURT YOU OR WRONGED YOU:
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you remember those who have hurt you or
wronged you. Make a list. For each individual on your “hurts” list, pray a prayer of
forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a decision. It is NOT an emotion. Do not let your emotions rob
you of this decision. Your decision is a powerful force. Your decision is a deliberate
act of your will. This decision to forgive each individual is based on the cross—on
the fact that Jesus took every hurt and every offense ever committed against you by
others. He did this so that you would not have to carry that load. He has already
carried them so that you would not have to carry them. Please understand that you
will need to remind your emotions of your decision to forgive. This reminder will
need to continue until your emotions come into line with your decision.
PRAYER OF FORGIVENESS: INSERT THE NAME OF THE PERSON YOU
ARE FORGIVING
“Father, in Jesus Name, I forgive____________. I forgive ________ on the
basis of the cross, on the basis that Jesus took this hurt, this offense so that I would
not have to carry it. I forgive __________ now by a deliberate act of my will in the
Name of Jesus. Amen
4. PERSONALIZE ROMANS CHAPTER 6—INSERT YOUR NAME AND
YOUR SIN INTO THE READING: Romans 6:1-14
27
Example: “What shall we say to this then? Shall ____________(name) continue in
______________(sin) that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall
_____________(name), who died to fear, live in it any longer….” (continue through
v. 14)
5. CONSIDER YOURSELF DEAD TO SIN—THAT SPECIFIC SIN:
Visualize Jesus nailing that sin to His cross.
6. REFUSE SATAN’S PACKAGES:
“Satan, I cannot receive your package of rejection, depression, grief, and
discouragement. That package was for the old ____________(name). He no longer
lives here. The new man, ________________(name), now lives here. The old
_____________(name) will not be back. He was crucified with Jesus on the cross.
The new ___________(name) only receives packages from the Father and the Holy
Spirit.”
7. CONFESS WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST: CONFESS WHAT YOU HAVE
IN CHRIST:
“I’m a new creation. I’m a brand new man. Old things are passed away. All
things are new. All things are of God.”
8. PRAISE GOD FOR HIS POWER TO DELIVER YOU FROM SIN.
9. PRAISE GOD FOR HIS PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE.
10. BASK IN GOD’S LOVE.
11. CONTINUALLY SEEK MEANINGFUL FELLOWSHIP.
28
EMOTIONS:
The experience of the new birth does not save or sanctify the mind or the
emotions. The emotions, as with the thought life, must be submitted to the process
of sanctification, that is, speaking the Word of God to the thoughts and emotions of
one’s soul. The emotions have been accustomed to “going their own way”, and must
be retrained, reigned in. The relationships and Christian service of the Christian are
too important to be determined by the emotions. The believer must not allow his/her
emotions to dictate how he/she lives or responds to others.
29
LESSON 9
PRAISE AS A FACTOR IN
HEALING PUT ON THE GARMENT OF PRAISE
“Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Lift up your voice to
God. Praise in the spirit and with understanding, O magnify the Lord.” This is one
of the great exchanges that God provides for us in His Word. As in every exchange
that He offers to us, one must be aware of the exchange and put it into practice for
himself/herself. “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
concerning you.” l Thessalonians 5:18
THE ENEMY IS SILENCED
The author of oppression, unbelief, doubt, and confusion is our enemy, the
devil. Jesus said of Satan, “He is the author of sin, sickness, and death.” “He has
come to steal, kill, and destroy.” If he and his assigned agents can be silenced, then
much more can be accomplished for the Kingdom of God.
PRAISE ACTIVATES THE WEAPON OF THE NAME OF JESUS
Psalms 8:1-3: “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the Earth!
You have set Your glory above the Heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and
unweaned infants, You have established strength because of Your foes (enemies),
that You might silence the enemy and the avenger.”
30
PLEASE NOTE: The Psalmist was speaking about the Name of the Lord;
• God established a special strength for His children;
• The strength that God established was so powerful that it silences the enemy;
• God’s people need to discover this source of strength.
Matthew 21:15-16 records the event that involved the children on the porches
and courts of the temple crying out, “Hosanna to the Son of David”. The chief priests
and the scribes were indignant toward Jesus, and said to Him, “Do you hear what
these are saying?” And Jesus replied to them, “Yes, have you never read, ‘Out of the
mouths of children and infants You have perfected praise’?”
Jesus was not merely quoting the Psalm, He was giving a revelation—
identifying the source of strength that silences the enemy—namely praise that
glorifies and lifts up the Name of Jesus.
Summary—Psalms 8; Matthew 21:15-16:
• The Psalmist was singing about the Name of the Lord;
• The source of strength was praise toward the name of the Lord.
• When believers (God’s children) praise the Name of the Lord, the enemy is
silenced;
• The enemy who is the accuser of the brethren needs to be silenced;
In this type of atmosphere, miracles often happen, because faith is not
contaminated or diluted by thoughts of unbelief or unworthiness that come from the
enemy [because he is silenced].
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
In the 1980s, Bill and Vicki Patterson, with a few friends, for the first time
knowingly used praise to launch the mighty weapon—the Name of Jesus. As a result,
people who came to our church with needs did not have to struggle and fight with
words of doubt and unbelief, because Satan, the enemy, and accuser, was silenced
within that gathering. Therefore, there were many miracles, many healings of
terminal diseases, and many signs and wonders—to God be the glory.
31
NOTES ON PRAISE
The meaning of the word “Psalms” is praise. The Book of Psalms is a book of
praises to the Lord. Because of the Book of Psalms, we can praise the Lord
intelligently, knowing that we are praising the Lord according to His Word.
WHEN SHOULD WE PRAISE?
The Psalmist declared, “I will bless the Lord at all times—his praise shall
continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord…”
The decision of the Psalmist was to bless or praise the Lord at all times. Then
he invites us to join him. “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name
together.” Psalms 34:3-4
WHO SHOULD PRAISE THE LORD?
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” Psalms 150:6
“The dead praise not.”
HOW SHOULD WE PRAISE?
• By “singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs—making melody in
your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19
• “O clap your hands all you people—shout unto God with a voice of
triumph.” Psalms 47:1
• “I will lift my heart with my hands to the God of the Heavens.”
• “Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my
hands as the evening sacrifice.” Psalms 141:2
• “I will praise You with my whole heart” Psalms 138:1
• “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise
You. Thus I will bless You while I live;
• will lift up my hands in Your name.” Psalms 63:3-4
• “Therefore by Him, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God
that is the fruit of my lips giving thanks to His Name.” Hebrews 13:15

LESSON 10
MAINTAIN YOUR HEALING TAKING DOMINION OVER DOUBT AND FEAR
1.CLASSIFY DOUBT AND FEAR AS SIN:
Anything, any person, any relationship, any emotion or feeling that keeps you
from being who God intended for you to be or keeps you from doing what God has
called you to do, or keeps you from living as God intended for you to live is SIN.
2. CONFESS THE SIN—CALL IT BY NAME:
REJECTION/HURT/FEAR/FEAR OF FAILURE/DEPRESSION/ETC.
Thank God for the forgiveness and the cleansing that you have received
according to His promise in 1 John 1:9.
33
4. PERSONALIZE ROMANS CHAPTER 6.
INSERT YOUR NAME AND YOUR SIN INTO THE READING OF Romans
6:1-14
Example: “What shall ____________ (your name) say to this then? Shall
__________ (your name) continue in fear of failure that grace may abound? God
forbid. How shall __________ (your name), who died to fear, live in it any
longer….” (continue through v. 14)
5. CONSIDER YOURSELF DEAD TO SIN—THAT SPECIFIC SIN:
Visualize Jesus nailing that sin to His cross.
6. REFUSE SATAN’S PACKAGES:
“Satan, I cannot receive your package of depression/grief/discouragement.
That package was for the old _________ (your name). He no longer lives here. The
new man, ____________ (your name), now lives here. The old ____________ (your
name) will not be back. He was crucified with Jesus on the cross. The new
_____________ (your name) only receives packages from The Father, The Son, and
the Holy Spirit.”
7. CONFESS WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST: CONFESS WHAT YOU HAVE
IN CHRIST:
I’m a new creation. I’m a brand new man. Old things are passed away. All
things are new. All things are of God.”
8. PRAISE GOD FOR HIS POWER TO DELIVER YOU FROM SIN.
9. PRAISE GOD FOR HIS PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE.
10. BASK IN GOD’S LOVE
11. CONTINUALLY SEEK MEANINGFUL FELLOWSHIP.
12. WIN WAR WITH SENSES
Study and meditate on the principles that are in the Word of God. Allow the
Word of God to develop mastery over your senses—what you see; what you hear;
what you feel. “For we walk by faith; not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
34
Be conscious of walking and living by faith—that is in the way that the Word
of God teaches you to live and to walk (lifestyle).
In any battle, fight your senses by the Word of God. To be able to do this, you
must know the promises of God that are found in the Scriptures. Living by faith is
the ability to simply believe and rely on the promises that are found in God’s Word.
FIGHT GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH
Paul was able to testify at the end of his life, “I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a
crown of righteousness which the Lord shall give to me on that day, and not to me
only, but to all those who love His appearing.” 2Timothy 4:7-8
The fight for believers is a fight of and for faith. It is a fight of faith vs.
unbelief. It is a fight of faith vs. doubt. It is a fight that is worth winning—every
time. Do not let the enemy’s words of doubt and unbelief win in your life.
