University to Work Initiative
Brief Description
I. Introduction
Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) launched the University to Work (UTW) Initiative in April 2010 as an initiative aiming at integrating the role of universities, private sectors and community institutes to provide the market with high-quality, efficient vocational education and skills development to induct engineering students to be qualified for the labor market in accordance with the national Egyptian goals and priorities.
II. Context of the Initiative
This initiative aims at producing world class skilled students among Egyptian universities and qualifying them by developing their technical and soft skills and molding their character to cope with market needs.
Under the umbrella of corporate responsibility, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG), The Egyptian European Organization for Training and Development (EEOTD), The Egyptian Corporate Responsibility Center (ECRC) and Rotary Clubs in Egypt agreed to implement the University to Work initiative. The list of universities participating in the Initiative includes but does not exclude Cairo University, Ain Shams University , Benha University ,Helwan University , AUC, El –Sherouk Academy ,The 6th of October Higher Institute for Technology ,Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Applied Arts .
Engineering Consultants Group ECG founded in 1969 by two highly qualified professional engineers, ECG has grown to become one of the world’s leading engineering companies (ranked 168 by ENR in 2012). Today, ECG enjoys a powerful workforce of over 2100 professionals covering the full spectrum of E/A consultancy firms’ services that span from project identification & design to project & construction management. The firm’s multidisciplinary expertise has allowed it to leave its mark on many Middle East development projects including airports, buildings (such as residential compounds, office buildings, banks and financial institutions, commercial and recreational centers, hospitals, educational complexes, hotels, and resorts), infrastructure, oil & gas, industrial, power, and transportation.

This initiative aims to produce world class skilled students among Egyptian universities and qualify them by developing their technical and skills and soft molding their character to comply with market needs.

III. Targeted Students
1- Full Scholarships target 140 students 2- Partial Scholarships target 60 students 3- Advanced Program targets 120 students
IV. Program Description
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between the academic education and the market needs in the field of engineering. This initiative is based on providing group of selected students with technical skills that help them to acquire the skills required by market needs.
The Program is divided into different phases; Phase one is the recruitment of trainees to the Program, phase two is the technical on the job and professional skills training. The final stage is the recruitment of the best performing team in ECG.
The ECG cup for the best performing University is also given to the University with the top performing teams and the University that will win the cup Consecutive years will keep it forever.
V. Program Outlines
100 hours Technical sessions for each department cover:
The technical sessions consist of 6 modules focusing on Structure, Electrical, Mechanical, ,Infrastructure , Interior Design and Architecture engineering fields.
50 hours Technical Workshop among all departments:
The workshop coordination's meetings between all departments to be aware of what happen in real work

80 hours Professional skills sessions cover:
The professional sessions consist of Ten modules.These modules focus on Leadership, Communication, Team Building, Negotiation, Innovation, Strategic Planning, Interviewing (grooming), Writing Professional CV , Mail Writing and Presentation skills.
20 hours Community service :
The Community service targeted to encourage UTW students to help others by participating in the Charity services like Ramadan packing , painting poor houses ,blood donation , etc.
25 hours Coordination meetings :
For the first time we had arranged coordination meeting between all Departments to be aware of the real work between disciplines by Designing an Administration Building.
International Interim Opportunity: (2 weeks)
This year, 2 UTW students will be given an international interim opportunity in March 2013. Later on 6 students will be targeted every year.
Why Students Join UTW? Developing their communicative, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Getting exposed to real life situations and problems they might face in the future.
Making new friends with students of the same major and widen their social network.
Turning all their theoretical studies into actual work where they can see how things are done in practical life.
Being trained on using all the state of the software and techniques to prepare them for the labor market.
Facilitating and supporting program graduates in finding jobs through our CV pool on UTW website and through the different Chambers of Commences in Egypt and outside Egypt.
ECG will help them in starting their career by sending their CVs to other engineering firms we deal with.
VI. Procedure of joining the Program
All students from the targeted universities have the chance to apply for the program.Qualified students have to pass technical, English, and PST tests. Qualified students will attend professional and technical sessions. The best 10 students have chance to attend advanced training course and number of vacancies at ECG will be offered for the top students

Phase one is the recruitment of trainees to the Program:
This phase is divided into different stages; Stage one is signing of protocol, Stage Two Registration, Stage three Exams, the final Stage Students selection.
Stage one - signing of protocol
In a magnificent ceremonial signing of protocol "from University to Work" has been with the attendance of number of Rotarians, Ministry of investment representatives, Deans & vice deans of engineering faculties & Engineering Consultants Group representatives.
Stage Two – Registration
In collaboration with Students' bodies we made info desk in all universities to answer all students' questions and then students filled the application form for project and took the exams schedule.
Stage Three – Exams
To ensure transparency Students selection divided into 3 stages, English test, PST test and technical test For all students.
Final Stage – Selection
Selection of trainees from all divisions was based on their results in a number of technical, English and PST tests. Then the results of the exams were announced in the initiative website and congratulations' mails were sent to them.
Phase two is the technical on the job and professional skills training: After selection stage, a schedule was made that fits all students and their date of exams in universities.
ECG conducted a training course in collaboration with Six Universities (Cairo, Ain Shams , Benha ,Helwan , AUC, El Sherouk ,6th October ,Fine Arts and Applied Arts).To ensure transparency, selection of 200 trainees from Structural, Architectural, Mechanical, Interior Design , Infra Structure and Electrical divisions was based on their results in a number of technical ,English and PST tests. The Training were consisted of three Programs :-

Go Environment :
evening with H.E. Dr. Laila Iskandar the Minister of State of Environment Affairs and Eng Amr Alloubathe chairman of Engineering Consutants Group (ECG) and Dr. Nevine Abdelkhalek and UTW team launching the ECG Academy and University To Work Initiative Environment competition for youth from the age of 15 to 25 ... the competition is taking place with Schools, Universities and Rotary Clubs in Egypt. The compatition aims at raising awarness about solid waste management and the segregation of solid waste from the source ... the evening included presentations from MES school, Ain Shams University and UTW team as well as the minstry of environmnt office. The Minster has highlihted the initiative and shared the latest views and initiatives of the minstry. The students of Ain Shams University shared as well a project that deals with renewable energy
