Newsletter Tips and JudgingDesign & Layout Fundamental Elements and Principles of Design are:
- Line - Shape - Volume -Texture - Color - Format
- Balance - Emphasis - Rhythm - Unity - Space
Why do we need creative design and layout?1) To make boring material more interesting
2) To have a visual representation of something
3) To draw attention to our work
4) To communicate an idea
About Color – Suggestions1) Choose colors appropriate for your design concept
2) Make sure the colors will enhance the readability of the type
3) Examine the amount of color in your design. Create visual impact?
4) Create color sketches (i.e. change colors used in the project) see which look best
5) When designing on a computer that colors may appear differently when printed
6) Keep complimentary colors in mind
Complimentary Colors – Those located directly across from each other on the color
wheel: Red – Green Orange – Blue Violet – Yellow
Balance- Equal distribution of weight
- Holds together, feels harmonious, looks unified
- Imbalance can make us feel uncomfortable
Emphasis ways to make something a focal point1) Make it the brightest
2) Make is a different color
3) Make it in a color if everything else is in black and white, or vice versa
4) Make it go in a different direction
5) Position it differently
6) Give it a texture or a different texture than other elements
7) Arrange all the elements to lead to it
8) Make it a different shape than the other elements
9) Isolate it
10) Make it clear and the other elements hazy
Pg. 16 Education ProgramsEducation Programs
11) Reverse it
12) Make it an opaque color and the other colors transparent
13) Make it glossy and the other elements dull
To Establish a Visual Hierarchy1) Decide on the importance of the elements
2) Use factors such as position, size, value, color and visual weight to make sure your
audience sees these elements in the order of importance
3) Create a flow of information from the most important element to the least
UnityThe elements in a design look as though they belong together. Viewer wants to see unity
rather than unrelated parts.
Correspondence: repeat an element (like color or shape), or establish a style
Continuity: create similarities in form (website, newsletter, etc. match)
Variety: can have continuity but variety (i.e. the layout is the same, but you use a variation of
the colors)
Alignment: visual connections can be made between and among elements, shapes and
objects when their edges or axes line up. The eye can pick up the relationship between the
forms
- Flush left / ragged right: text that aligns to the left side and is uneven on the right
- Justified: type that aligns on the left and right sides
- Flush right / ragged left: text that aligns on the right side and is uneven on the left
Centered
- Flow: elements should be arranged so that the audience is led from one element to
another through the design. Remember the ‘Z’ or backwards ‘S’ idea… your eyes
scan a page in a ‘Z’ pattern so the elements create flow and movement.
Typeface• Carefully consider the format; if type is designed for a poster is should be readable
from a distance.
• Design type in a visual hierarchy. People tend to read the biggest elements first; they
tend to read headlines or titles first, subtitles or pull quotes second, then captions and
finally text type.
• Type arrangement or alignment should enhance readability.
• Letter spacing, word spacing and line spacing all factor into readability,
communication and expression. Never depend on automatic spacing.
• Color should enhance the message and expression and not hinder readability.
• Typography should be appropriate for the message and audience.
Pg. 17 Education ProgramsEducation Programs
• Rather than mixing fonts, consider using variations of one font (size, color, italics,
bold, underline, etc.).
• Avoid novelty or decorative typefaces
Factors that enhance legibility1) Positive and negative space relationships
2) Distinctiveness of individual letters
3) Thoughtful letter, word and line spacing
4) Strong value contrast between letters and background
5) Word placement to encourage eye movement in the correct reading
sequence.

Collections and ExhibitsExhibits and Visitor Experience:
Car-Toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: the Art and Influence of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth featuring the story of Ed Roth, his creations, and a few of the automotive greats he has inspired, including Tom Peters will run through Bash 2021. The next exhibit to be installed will be Corvette Powered, which will focus on non-GM production vehicles (such as the Iso, Gordon-Keeble, and Avanti II), high-end Corvette powered hotrod and custom cars, and other unique vehicles powered by Corvette engines/drivelines.
Complete renovations of both the Performance Gallery and the Design and Engineering Gallery were completed this year and have entirely new exhibits. The Performance Gallery has been developed to be a highly interactive experience for guests, allowing them to guide their way through the stories they want to hear/learn about.
The “Entombed Corvette” that was donated at the end of 2019 now has a permanent exhibit in the Nostalgia Gallery. A full recreation of the tomb was created to exhibit the car at the NCM.
Collections:
The work to move, reorganize, and reconcile our collections continues. Collections Building 1 (old FOP building) and Collections Building 2 (old Multi-Purpose Building) have been heavily focused on over the last few months. Numerous small and medium sized artifacts have been moved to CB1 already and the vehicles in CB2 are being rearranged with new Titan lifts in place to double stack the collection.
The Library & Archives continues to collect documents related to the history of Corvette. We are also culling the collection for items that should not be housed in our L&A and during the 25th Anniversary celebration we began selling books and manuals that do not fit the collection. The funds raised from these sales will go back into the Library & Archives budget to aid in preserving the collections we do house and possible acquisitions through purchase in the future.
We continue to develop the collection and have added numerous artifacts over the last few years.
Deaccession Process:
In 2019 the Collections and Exhibits Department led by the Director of Collections began the
process of deaccessioning artifacts from the collections of the National Corvette Museum.
This has, to date, included two Corvettes. This is in no way a process that any Museum takes
lightly. The decision to remove objects from a collection is a slow process that involves
Pg. 23 Education ProgramsEducation Programs
numerous discussions within not only the Department, but also with the Collections
Committee.
The deaccession process has numerous steps to ensure that the objects being removed
from the collection do not fit the needs of the Museum, are duplicates, or cannot be properly
cared for by the Museum. We also make this process completely transparent, as required by
AAM ethical guidelines.
Any vehicle or other object removed from the collection of the Museum is also restricted in
the way in which it can be sold. The most common option to sell the vehicle/object from the
Museum is to put it through an auction, this will ensure the object reaches fair market value.
Deaccessioned objects can also be used in trade for other acquisitions that are more fitting
for the collection or can be transferred to another non-profit entity. Whatever method of
disposal is chosen for the object, it is fully documented within the deaccession file for that
item and kept on permanent record at the Museum.
Pg. 24 Education ProgramsEducation Programs
Education ProgramsThe NCM is actively building our reputation as an educational facility. Below are a few of the
programs we offer and ways you can be involved:
MEchanics $20 per student (includes admission)A two-hour class where students of all ages will learn basic car care from changing a tire, to
checking fluids in an engine, changing a headlight bulb and more.
Special Emphasis Tours Group tour rates applyCareer Awareness – During this tour, students meet with our professional staff and discuss
their career, requirements and job opportunities.
Musical Performance- We provide an outlet for choirs, bands and ensembles to not only take
a tour of the NCM, but to showcase their musical talents Scouts- Includes Museum tour and
scavenger hunt with a “fun” patch for completing it.
Classroom OutreachThe Museum takes to the road to visit the classroom in one of our NCM Corvettes. We speak
about the NCM and teach students how to be safe passengers with our “Backseat Driver”
program.
Teacher ResourcesWe provide not only automotive related activities for the classroom, but also lesson plans for
our always changing exhibits and displays.
Ways You Can HelpFund A Field Trip It’s become increasingly difficult for schools to fund learning opportunities outside the
classroom. With your help, it is possible to send students on a field trip to the Museum that
cannot afford to take fieldtrips. Your contribution goes towards admission, boxed lunches
and/or transportation. $300 funds a single classroom. $1,000 funds an entire grade.
Hot Wheels/Matchbox CarsThe future of Corvette starts with the kids. What better way to spark that excitement than to
send kids home with a toy Corvette? Whether you donate a few or a hundred, we appreciate

them all, and we make sure they get in the hands of excited children to take home from their
day at the NCM.

Development and Donations
Ways to Support the National Corvette Museum
The National Corvette Museum is a not-for-profit foundation under section 501(c)(3) of the
Internal Revenue Code, which means that we are eligible to accept tax deductible donations.
We provide a donation receipt via letter or email for every cash gift made.
Cash GiftsA financial contribution to the Museum can be made at any time. Gifts can be designated to
a project or department at the museum, or they can simply provide support for the greatest
area of need at the Museum. Please contact Amy Hardin, Development and Sponsorship
Manager to make a gift to the Museum.
Additionally, twice a year we mail a solicitation letter to our current and former donors and our
current members. This letter asks for continued support for the Museum. Sometimes our
plea is for a specific project and sometimes for general support for upkeep of the Museum.
We offer commemorative gifts with specific levels of donations.
Multi-year Giving Commitments
A multi-year, major gift pledge agreement can also be discussed. Multi-year commitments
allow the Museum to predictably plan for future revenue streams that will lead to upgrades
and enhancements, while allowing you to give at a level and on a schedule that fits your
needs and preferences.
Gifts can be designated to a particular project or department at the museum, or they can
simply provide support for the greatest area of need at the Museum.
Dedication Opportunities
We offer many opportunities to recognize or commemorate a special occasion or person.
Donations for these opportunities are also tax deductible.
Flint Wall Donations – Several years ago the Flint, Michigan Plant was torn down, and
General Motors saved the bricks for us to use for fundraising. Our facilities team built three

walls by the Assembly Plant display, and enthusiasts may make a $250 donation to place a
name on one of these bricks. The first two walls are full, and we have several bricks named
on the third and final wall.
Chevrolet Theater Seats – The seats in our Chevrolet Theater are available for naming for a
$1,000 donation.
Club Parking Lot Banners – Clubs may sponsor banners in the Museum’s parking lot for a
$500 donation. These are changed out each year, and clubs are notified via eNews when it
is time to change the banners out.
Efli’s Silver Pearl Sisterhood
Elfi’s Silver Pearl Sisterhood is a group of women with a shared passion for Corvette, who
enjoy celebrating the Corvette experience, uniting with other Corvette enthusiasts, promoting
the traditions of America’s Sports Car, and collaborating to advance the mission of the
National Corvette Museum. Members pool their financial gifts and allocate the funds to a
project or program at the Museum to maximize the impact of their philanthropy. Members
have an equal voice on how the pooled funds are utilized annually. A member may be as
involved as she wishes, from serving as an ambassador to simply making a financial gift.
Each member commits to a gift of $1,000 per year (paid by August 1, annually). All donations
are deposited into a restricted fund. The full membership of the group will meet at the NCM
Anniversary Celebration each year and will vote on distribution of the funds. Each member
has one vote.
Club Based Fundraising
As the National Corvette Museum continues to grow its Collection and begins planning for
future capital campaign projects, we will continue to rely on the support of Corvette Clubs and
their members to financially contribute to the Museum. NCM recently partnered with several
clubs on a project based fundraising campaign, and we are planning to do more of this in the
future. The NCM Development and Sponsorship Manager will be in communication with Club
Ambassadors as opportunities arise that may interest your Club and Members
Required Minimum DistributionsFor Museum members and supporters who have reached the age of 70.5 years, there is an
opportunity to make a gift to the Museum without taking all or part of your required minimum

Duntov SocietySeveral years ago we formed our Duntov Society to honor those who have included the
Museum in their estate plans. To date we have about 80 estate gift commitments from
individuals or couples who plan to leave the Museum a car, cash, or real estate.
Spire SocietyOur Spire Society recognizes donors who have contributed $25,000 or more to the Museum
cumulatively. Cash and estimated estate gifts are counted as part of the Spire Society total.
Recognition for Support
To say thanks to our supporters, we annually host our Winner’s Circle, Duntov Society and
Spire Society evening on Friday night of our NCM Michelin Bash Event.

with a special Duntov crystal.

a special Spire Society gift and again when they move to the next cumulative giving level.
