Meet your Committee: Christine de Roo
I was born in Portsmouth, England. I moved to New Zealand in 1969 with my parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. One of my brothers is my twin and I am amazed at the number of people that ask if we are identical!
My twin brother and I have always been extremely competitive with each other.
I am married with 2 adult daughters who are both currently exploring other parts of the world.
My main interests other than bridge are croquet and textile art. I am the Wellington Croquet Association Tournament Convenor. I have had 2 garments in the World of Wearable Arts shows and a piece accepted into the Norsewear Exhibition. I am currently learning how to make bobbin lace.
I first played bridge in 2012 at the Mana U3A bridge group. I soon realised there was a lot to learn and joined the beginners lessons at Kapi Mana in 2013.

Welcome Pairs, 13 August 2014
Peter Dench was East, happily contemplating

when North, the dealer, opened 1NT.
Ever the optimist Peter tried 4C (always Gerber, he hopes).
John Avery, fresh from the lessons, owned up to two Aces and Peter bid
7H, though he acknowledges 7NT would be better.
Three pairs out of 9 bid slam - John and Peter were the only pair to bid
seven - well done.

DOUBLE TROUBLE or
When I said "Double" I meant "Double" not "DOUBLE".
A 1993 book by Sally Horton
On Monday 25 August at 7:30pm, led by David Morel, 27 bridge fanatics discussed the various meaning of "double" as espoused in Horton's book. Takeout doubles, negative doubles, responsive doubles, doubles of artificial bids - it was all covered.
Partnership agreement is the key - you and your partner must understand each other's doubles
If you're in the "protective" position (that's the last bidder following the opener, with no other bid) you can double on as few as 6 points!
As well as discussing when to double, how to respond to a double was also covered. Some responses can depend on how brave you feel when bidding, but, once again, partnership agreement is the key!
So, those who attended left with systems to help improve their doubling, and their responses to partners' doubles - and the wise advice : Don't be afraid to double!

If Your Partner Cannot Follow Suit
Written by Harry Dalmey
If your partner cannot follow suit Do not behave like a brute
Just smile, nod and chuckle While biting your knuckle
And next rubber give them the boot!
