On behalf of the board of directors of the Southern Alberta Technology Council I would like to welcome you to the 2017 Lethbridge Regional Science Fair and Science Olympics – SciFusion! Over 80 students have worked very hard to bring you the best of youth science research taking place in Southern Alberta. These projects represent a milestone of achievement in the lives of these young scientists. In addition to our participants, seventy-plus top scientists and community leaders join us Friday evening to evaluate the work of our young scientists and engineers and to mentor them; helping to show how their work can take them on an amazing life-long journey of scientific discovery. If you ask a past participant what the best part of the fair was for them, most often you hear “judging day”! This is because they get one-on-one attention with an engaged and attentive expert who simply “gets them”. This contact is both affirming and challenging, and is the heart of the fair. Many of the judges and scientists who will be taking part in this year’s fair recount their own memories of past science fairs where they were participants. They tell how it was a formative event in who they later became as scientists, business people and community leaders. Please join us in honoring each project in the fair by stopping by a station and encouraging these amazing young people to keep doing such excellent work!
We would also like to thank all of the people in the lives of these wonderful participants who made their work possible through late night poster making, material gathering, mentoring, scheduling, crying, laughing, building and tearing down! Without your support these talented young people could not do what they do – Thank You!
Please enjoy the fair and join us in celebrating youth science in Southern Alberta!
Enjoy the Fair!

Kevin M. McGeoughDepartment of Geography (Archaeology)
The ancient Greeks are often credited with being the first scientists but the roots of science and scientific thinking are evident in many ancient cultures from many locations. In this talk, Kevin will explore the kinds of science that were practiced in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Iraq). He will give examples of early biology, geography, and astronomy, explaining some of the logic behind ancient approaches to these subjects. Kevin will show how these and other scientific values lay behind the construction some of the monumental architecture of the ancient world, like the Great Pyramids at Giza. Throughout the talk, Kevin will emphasize how archaeologists know what they know about ancient science and will model some of the methods archaeologists use to study long vanished cultures.
Kevin McGeough grew up in Lethbridge, where he participated in the Lethbridge Regional Science fair on many occasions. He completed his BA at the University of Lethbridge in 1996 and after that continued his graduate studies at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. He currently teaches archaeology in the Geography Department, where he specializes in the ancient Near East. the author of many books and articles, he has excavated in Israel, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt.
