Xerox Bringing 500 Jobs to Greater rochester, n.Y. region

Xerox has announced that it will invest $4.3 million to renovate and equip a 23,000-square-foot state-of-

the-art call center facility at its Webster campus in Monroe County. the expansion will create 500 new jobs,

including 350 in 2012 and an additional 150 jobs by 2013. Plus, 70 local jobs are being retained as a result

of the expansion. Renovations are expected to begin in February and Xerox plans to begin hiring employees

in March.

“Xerox’s decision to expand its operations in Monroe County speaks volumes about our region’s signifi cant assets,” said Monroe County Executive

Maggie Brooks. “Our highly skilled workforce and rich intellectual capital played a large role in Xerox’s decision to grow its footprint in Monroe County.”

In a collaborative effort, the County of Monroe Industrial Development agency (COMIDa) and Empire State Development (ESD) worked with Xerox to develop

a benefi ts package that includes job creation tax credits and a local tax abatement.

Xerox Corporation has been contributing to the strength and vitality of the Greater Rochester, N.Y. Region for more than half a century, employing 6,400

residents in Monroe County and approximately 10,000 statewide. With sales approaching $23 billion, Xerox is now the world’s leading enterprise for

PresidenT’s MessaGethere has been a lot of national media coverage lately about the Greater Rochester Region’s economy and the impact Kodak has on our long-term economic sustainability. Despite Kodak’s recent bankruptcy filing, I have faith in the resiliency of

our community because we have been transforming our economy for three decades. Gone are the days where we are dependent on any one company. We are now a small to mid-sized business town with a number of successful firms driven by the quality of our highly educated workforce.

at the height of Kodak’s success in the 1980s, 400,000 people were employed in our region. today, that number is 600,000. Successful local companies such as Itt Exelis, Carestream Health and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics are Kodak spin offs that maintain a strong presence in our community. Plus, emerging businesses such as Logical Images can trace their roots to Kodak.

the new story about Rochester is beginning to take hold around the country. We are known as an innovation hub thanks to our smart workforce, new emerging businesses, entrepreneurial spirit and high volume of accepted patents. We lead New York State and the nation in terms of job growth over the past year. the Labor Department’s recent report showed Rochester, N.Y. accounted for more than half of all private sector jobs created in Upstate N.Y.

Our transformation is not limited to one or two sectors but rather includes many industries from higher education and health care to optics and energy innovation, from advanced manufacturing and professional services to agriculture and food processing. that diversity and high output of goods and services are why Brookings Institution recently named Rochester, N.Y. the third-best economy in the United States.

One national article referencing Rochester said in 2012, “Smart is Hot.” Smarts, and stability, are a couple of the reasons why theStreet.com just named Rochester one of the top ten cities “poised for greatness” in 2012. and I believe it – we are poised for greatness in 2012 thanks to our talent, our diversity, our consistency and our resilience.

Go Trade!the Greater Rochester, N.Y. region is consistently ranked as a top exporting region per capita in the U.S. and the largest exporting region in New York State. In 2010, our region exported nearly seven percent of all

U.S. exports, and this is largely due to small and medium-sized exporters (SMEs) who account for more than 97 percent of all exports. an impressive stat, for sure. However, there are thousands of companies that are not yet exporting. a recent statistic from the International trade association (Ita) indicates that only one percent of 33 million companies that are able to export are currently doing so, and of those companies, 30 percent are exporting to only one country. With programs such as the National Export Initiative, which has a goal to double exports by 2015, providing grants for small businesses to export, my question is, why aren’t more companies exporting?

With the power of the Internet today, every company is global. a few years ago, Liberty Pumps in Bergen, N.Y. realized exporting was going to be the key to sustaining its success. However, no one internally had any export knowledge. that prompted the owner to invest in a full-time, experienced international sales manager. One by one, the company devised a spreadsheet of all its products and pinpointed what had to change in order to be able to export its pumps. Utilizing Free trade agreements, programs from the U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC), and by establishing relationships and a distributor network, the investment has paid off. Liberty Pumps has exported its products to more than 20 international markets in less than two years, adding jobs and continuing to expand.

the Greater Rochester, N.Y. Region boasts a sophisticated international business sector that has services right here to help you succeed internationally.
