Geothermal energy harnessing methods:

• Water Rankine Cycles – Condensing steam turbine

• Dry steam

• Flash

• Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) – Binary plants

• Combined Cycles

• Flexibility of operation: partial loads effective matching

• No water consumption

• Easy maintenance: no need for costly and time consuming

service operations

• Easy operation: fully-automatic plant, no need for dedicated

personnel to operate it

• Adaptability: it is possible to produce electric energy with new

kind of resources never exploited before:

• Low temperature

• Low Enthalpy (liquid dominated)

• High NCG content

ORC vs. STEAM TECHNOLOGY

• In many geothermal plants around the world

the heat content of the brine is “wasted”

• Binary power plants can operate with the hot

liquid brine and produce more electrical power

out of the same wells

• The power production of the geothermal plants

can be enhanced without the risk of drilling

new wells

• Many of these plants are in operation around

the world

• Exergy has constructed the first and unique

commercial geothermal organic turbine

operating in Italy as a bottoming of a single

flash power plant in Bagnore, Tuscany

The current situation in MEXICO:

• At the moment only few MW of geothermal energy are produced with the binary

technology

• An average of 223 production wells were active in 2013 in Mexico producing 6.358

t/h of Steam, this represent the 45% w/w of the total amount of fluid extracted.

(Data: Geothermal proceedings WGC 2015) This means that, theoretically, there

are about 7.77 t/h of brine available for producing clean energy without major

drilling risks. Not all of this brine can be used but surely there are good

opportunities to exploit some of this.

• The binary technology can bring to Mexico a significant increase of geothermal

energy production

• More power can be produced with the binary technology by operating existing wells

that could not be exploited with the steam technology (low enthalpy wells, not

flowing wells by means of enhanced lift)

The Radial Outflow Turbine is capable

of converting the energy that is contained

in the fluid with higher efficiency than

competing technologies on the market.

Designed and patented by EXERGY, the Radial Outflow Turbine is unique in the ORC marketplace.

The idea was first conceptualized by EXERGY CEO Claudio Spadacini.

CONCLUSIONS

Page 34: Taller Internacional sobre Energía Geotérmica

All Rights Reserved© Exergy S.p.A. 2015Proprietary & Confidential

CONCLUSIONS

• The Organic Rankine Cycle has several advantages compared with the

traditional steam technology. With the developing of the ORC the

possibilities of exploiting the geothermal resource have grown fast

opening a new share of the market.

• The Exergy radial outflow turbine has demonstrated great technology

advantages and is leading the development of Exergy into the market

• Many binary power plants have been constructed demonstrating during

their operation the strengths of the ORC technology in exploiting the

available geothermal resource

• The future of the Geothermal Power industry might be in the ORC

technology and Mexico has the best chances to become the leader of

this growth
