Thirteen braaiers, armed with meat in one hand and spice, braai tongs and bastings in the other, were ready to compete in the country’s biggest braai-off. It was Mike Poyiadjis from Senderwood, Deon Fourie from Sandton, Alan Ridley from Krugersdorp and Hanroe Erasmus from Norwood who were selected to be part of the eight-man South African team to compete in the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbeque on 26 October and the World Food Championships between 7-10 November. The team will compete in Tennessee and will then drive the 2000 miles to Las Vegas in 2 RVs for the World Food Competition. These four braaiers will join Borries, a mountain of a man and a proud Albertonian who recently won the popular Bring&Braai competition on DStv’s kykNET as well asBraaiboy, who entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2012 when he was awarded the world record for the longest continuous braai. Braaiboy has braaied every day for the past four and a half years. Borries and Braaiboy are the team captains. Sarel Loots, aka Sarel Van Sabie, a ChesaNyama representative and a celeb chef, and Jimmy Baptista, MD of Jimmy’s Sauces, form part of the team. tame TIMES managed to sneak in a chat with Borries between all the braaing and judging. Borries explained that braaing is not only about the meat but about the socialising. “It is not fun to braai alone,” Borries said. When asked what skills or technique makes for a good braai, Borries said that all you need are good ingredients, mature meat, you must know your butcher and have great side dishes. “That is where your wife comes in. Behind every good braaier there is a great woman,” Borries laughs. “If a man can’t braai, he is going to struggle to find a wife.” Hayden Quinn from Australian Master Chef was one of the judges. Die Alberton-erfenisvereniging het hierdie jaar nie op Erfenisdag, 24 September, soos baie ander Suid-Afrikaners gebraai nie. Om sy naam gestand te doen, het die vereniging by twee plekke bome geplant wat hopelik in die toekoms ’n heerlike koelteplekkie vir ’n aantal mense sal wees. Jaarliks word ’n “Boom van die Jaar” aangewys en daar is besluit om van hierdie bome by die Alberton-aftreeoord en die Alberton Tuiste vir Bejaardes te plant, om daardeur erkenning te gee vir dit wat die dorp se ouer inwoners vir die dorp gedoen en beteken het en wat steeds hulle
bydrae lewer. Lede van die Erfenisvereniging het die 2013/2014-Boom van die Jaar, die Wit-Melkhoutboom (Vepris lanceolata) geplant. Die woorde op die gedenkplaatjie gee duidelik die rede vir dié besluit: “Ons sê dankie aan die senior burgers vir hulle jarelange bydrae tot die erfenis van ons dorp, Alberton.”Mnr Dawie Botma, die bestuurder van die Alberton-aftreeoord, het die Erfenisvereniging vir die gebaar bedank en die hoop uitgespreek dat dit die begin is van ’n nou verbintenis tussen die aftreeoord en die Erfenisvereniging.

VLU makietieTydens hul 76ste verjaarsdag het die Moedertak van die VLU sommer heerlik ontspanne op kleinskaal gemakietie.Die volop heerlike tuisgebak het weereens die humor laat opvlam.Daarna was dit gelukwense aan twee taklede wat ook die maand verjaar en toe lekker Bingo Dingo.Baie geluk ook aan die Voorsitster Jeanette Botha, wie ‘n eerste prys by die Goue Suide Kongres verwerf het met haar wasgoedpennetjiesak. Sonskyntak het 3de prys verower uit 11 takke. Weereens het die jaartema, Bemagtig Vroue, onder bespreking gekom, aangesien dit die hoofdoel van die organisasie is. Dit het hulle laat besef dat lede op soveel lewensterreine opgevoed en verryk word, en dat geen lid ooit ‘n sukkelbestaan sal voer nie.Indien daar nog dames is wat hulself so wil verryk in ‘n aangename, uitreikende atmosfeer, kan hul vir Rosa skakel by: 011 868 2734.

Elkeen het ‘n mini-kaartjie gemaak om die verskillende metodes te leer.Hulle het ook meer geleer oor Spanje in hul internasionale afdeling en Rina Mowbray het hul meer vertel oor die bome van die jaar.Na afloop van die vergadering het hulle saam ‘n boom geplant om die lente te vier.VLU Dinwiddie vergader elke derde Donderdagoggend van die maand, en enige dame wat belang stel om te kom kyk wat hulle doen kan gerus skakel by 082 376 1900. Die dames leer so baie van mekaar en maak lekker nuwe vriendinne.
October is without a doubt my favourite month of the year. Spring is in full bloom, the weather is just right to hit the pool and the sun sets much later. When I think of October, all I see is pink – not only because it is Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is just such a happy colour.tame TIMES is dedicating all of the October editions to the cause and we will bring you all kinds of information on cancer and cancer awareness during the month. This week we explain what breast cancer is, what the stages of breast cancer are, and the inspirational story of Matuschka and the self-portrait she did in 1993 after undergoing surgery.Have a look on page 8 for a few other causes you can support, as it is not only Breast Cancer Awareness month but also Eye Care Awareness month. Werner Fourie again supplied us with some valuable information regarding eye care - this week the focus is on the effects of chemotherapy on your vision. Until 20 October, for every pair of spectacles you purchase at Werner Fourie Optometrists, a pair will be donated to a child in need. Four suspects were arrested after they initiated a shoot-out between them and the police in Wadeville Germiston, which claimed the lives of five people.According to SAPS spokesperson Lt Col. Mohale, three suspects and one member of SAPS crime intelligence were declared dead on the scene of the attempted robbery at a scrap metal establishment in Wadeville. The incident took place on Thursday 26 September as members of SAPS and EMPD
followed up on an anonymous tip-off. The operation also saw three suspects and one EMPD officer being hospitalised due to sustained injuries. Four others were arrested. At time of print one of the three hospitalised suspects had also lost his life.Unconfirmed reports make mention to other suspects fleeing the scene, however police could not confirm this as a fact neither could they confirm if any money was stolen.

How chemotherapy affects the eyes
This month is breast cancer awareness month and we would like to share some effects of chemotherapy on the eyes, just so that you know what to look out for. As you may gather, we are no experts in the field of cancer, but feel that we can highlight some symptoms that may be important.
These symptoms mentioned should not be ignored. Please inform your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms. Any sudden vision loss and severe eye pain should also be brought to the doctor’s attention.
Keep an “eye” out for the following symptoms:
Cloudy vision. This may be a sign that cataracts are developing. Cataracts are when the crystalline lens in the eye loses its transparency.red eyes. Conjunctivitis, some people call it “pink eye”, is seen as redness and inflammation of the white of the eye (conjunctiva).dry eyes. The tear layer’s integrity may be influenced by chemotherapy and causes the eyes to feel dry and you may even
feel a burning sensation.itChy eyes. Some medications could cause a slight allergic reaction and the eyes to itch.photophobia. Photophobia is more commonly known as light sensitivity. Some medications can cause you to become light sensitive, but it may also be caused by more serious secondary problems like glaucoma.

Celebrate Recovery
Daar is waarskynlik nie ‘n meer bekende ikoon vir diensbaarheid in die moderne wêreld as Moeder Teresa nie. Sy het in haar leeftyd min gepraat, maar baie gedoen. Moeder Teresa het in die strate van Kolkata oor alle grense heen nood verlig en in die liefde van God die Vader mense gedien. Een van die aanhalings uit haar lewe is: “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”Ek wonder baie oor die rol van nederigheid in die lewe van ‘n Christen. Nie oor ek van mening is dat nederigheid nie belangrik is nie, maar oor dit die skuiling kan raak waarin Christen (leiers) wegkruip en verlam word. Nederigheid word soms ‘n mooi woord vir kragteloos, moedeloos en onseker. In die hond-vreet-hond wêreld waarin ek en jy leef is dit belangrik dat die evangelie ruggraat en geloofwaardigheid sal hê. Daarom wil ek vandag elkeen aanmoedig om te hoor wat Moed er Teresa gesê het - moenie wag vir ‘n leier of ‘n aksie van iewers af nie. Doen dit self! Doen dit nederig, maar doen dit ‘bold’.

Ek kan nie glo dit is al Oktober nie! Nie net is dit die mooiste maand nie, dit is ook die maand waar ons almal herinner word aan daardie belangrike afspraak wat ons as vroue nie veronderstel is om ooit mis te loop nie – die mammogram. Ek kan nie genoeg vir julle vertel hoe belangrik dit is om seker te maak dat jou gesondheid nog is wat dit moet wees nie.Dit is wonderlik om te sien hoe almal betrokke is by hierdie saak. Oral waar jy kyk is dit pienk, van die tame TIMES tot die advertensies waar daar gewoonlik geel motors gebruik sou word. Mense loop rond met pienk strepies in hul hare, insluitend myself. Gysie was egter nie so braaf nie, maar hy het darem sy hare pienk laat spuit vir die dag. Volgens hom is dit minder permanent – net soos borskanker behoort te wees. Ou Gys raak soms sulke wyshede kwyt. Ek is bly dat ek vir my so slim man gekies het.
TIP: Dames (en here) – borskanker kan enigiemand tref, op enige ouderdom, van enige geslag, ras of geloof. Maak sommer vandag ‘n afspraak om jou gesondheid na te gaan.
My safety, my concernMinister to one of the most tormented ministries in the country, Nathi Mthetwa recently delivered the nation’s crime statistics and, in true South African style, the result thereof has been a mixed bag of Facebook and twitter statuses. I must say, if there is one thing that we are good at, it is letting everyone who can’t do anything to change the situation (because half the time they are also complaining about the same thing) know how dissatisfied we are.So what really is the problem with the crime statistics? Somebody please enlighten me. Will we ever get to the point where we are completely satisfied with the performance of the ladies and gents in blue? If yes, under which conditions will that be?Before minister Mthetwa’s announcement, I must admit, I paid no attention to crime stats. But even a passing glance at the stats reveals that in comparison to the downward trend we experienced over the past six years, we have some questions to ask ourselves. Now the question I’ve been asking myself is: Does this decline mean that there is a decline in the capability of the man in the uniform? Does it perhaps reveal that criminals are more slippery than ever before? Whatever the case, I believe two things – firstly, I cannot complain about the way police do their jobs unless I give them full cooperation. If we, as law abiding citizens, are not willing to be policed then the police
will never be able to properly serve us. For example, have you ever realised how irritated we get whenever we are randomly pulled over or encounter a roadblock? I was shocked once when at a community meeting one gentleman complained to Police General Mzwandile Petros, over the implementation of an initiative that was planned to increase police visibility by allowing them to drive with their lights on. If we see SAPS as an irritant, how do we suppose they will execute their duties diligently?Secondly, I am strongly against delegating my safety onto someone else. It’s my responsibility to make sure I am adequately protected. There are nowhere close to enough policemen and women to guarantee a crimeless South Africa. I don’t see us winning the fight against crime while we rely solely on the police. We have to actively involve ourselves on a personal and a community level. Rather than entertaining ourselves with rants, which ultimately take us nowhere but to the next issue we have to complain about, let’s get involved. Know your neighbour, support community policing forums and similarly aligned corporate formations. Share with us ideas of how we can, together with the men and women in blue, drive criminal elements out of our communities. Saving Grace
On the evening of 17 September a fire broke out in unit 19 of Brackenveld Villas, Brackendowns. The owner, Mrs Jewel Grace, was asleep when the fire broke out and woke up when she was unable to breathe. She rushed from her bedroom to the lounge, which was engulfed in flames. In a panic she ran to her bedroom, grabbing her cell phone trying to phone her son Steven. Unable to locate her keys or get in touch with Steven, and already suffering from smoke inhalation on top of a lung operation 3 months ago, she collapsed at the front door unable to free herself. Residents broke the front door open and manage to pull Mrs Grace to safety. Mrs Grace was rushed to the Union Hospital and remains in a stable condition in the ICU. Unit 19 was totally destroyed and 4 other units suffered water damage. Mrs Grace, who is on pension, unfortunately did not have any
insurance and therefore lost all they owned in the fire. It is unclear as to what could have caused the fire. We would like to call on the community to please find it in their hearts to assist with donations of any linen, furniture, or household goods, so that we are able to assist Mrs Grace and her son to get back on their feet. Taking Hands (a community-based project), who have assisted the Alberton community over the past 2 years and have helped over 90 families in need, will once again assist the Grace family, however cannot do this without the assistance of the Alberton community.

It is with regret that I announce that Maureen Ansett, President of Broken Wings for 15 years, has retired due to illness.Maureen and Lettie Bardone established Broken Wings in 1998 as a day care centre for adults with disabilities. She did all our legal negotiations and she worked effortlessly for Broken Wings. If she commits to doing something, you can depend that she will do it. She is a role model for us and we will miss her at the meetings. She will be an honorary member of Broken Wings and we wish her everything of the best for the future.

Run for your school’s benefit
The Johannesburg SPAR Challenge race at the Wanderers Club (13 October) offers schools the opportunity to test their young runners and stand a chance of winning computer equipment. The top three schools will each receive a Mecer laptop with Win7 Starter software and School image. The school with the most entrants will win a Brother Flatbed Print, Scan, Fax and Copy printer, and the school with the second highest number of entrants will win a Brother Mono Laser Scan, Copy, Print and Fax printer. Girls participating in the 10km challenge must be 15 or older, but there is also a 5km fun run, which means the schools competition is open to primary schools as well. Although some girls may want to emulate runners like Kalmer and van Zyl and try for the top spot, walkers are welcome in both events, and many girls may prefer to walk the routes, chatting to their friends and catching up on the latest news.
Many schools use the challenge to promote school unity and some organise competitions within the schools – house against house, or grade against grade.Entries for the schools competition should be submitted by 28 September. Since June 2008, tail docking has been declared illegal in South Africa as it is considered cruel. Most puppies are born with long tails; sometimes, albeit rarely, a puppy is born with a short tail as can happen with Corgi’s and some Australian Cattle dogs. Tail docking is a criminal offence, no matter who does it. There is no exclusion for breeders.The NSPCA has always been opposed to tail docking, as well as any other form of mutilation, such as ear cropping. Tail docking is a contravention of the Animal Protection Act. Before 2008, the SPCA movement did not have the support of the veterinary profession on this matter, but subsequent scientific research has shown that tail docking is a painful and traumatic experience for a puppy, even if performed under local anaesthetic. Even at a few days of age, puppies have a well-developed sense of pain and a fully developed nervous system. Skin, blood vessels, nerves, bone and cartilage are
cut during the procedure. If it is poorly done, problems such as nerve damage, neuroma, pain, bleeding, infection, problems with defecating and urinating and even death can occur.If a veterinarian is found guilty of tail docking, unless for justifiable medical reasons, they will be liable to prosecution. The same goes for breeders. Some breeders will do the tail docking themselves, but they are also liable to prosecution. If you are aware of anyone who is still docking tails, please report them to your nearest SPCA. If you do decide to buy a puppy from a breeder, ensure it has a natural long tail.Dogs use their tails to communicate with people and other dogs. When they are happy and want to be friends, they wag their tails wildly. When they are worried or scared, they wag their tails stiffly to say “back off, otherwise I’ll bite you”. Dogs use their tails to communicate just as they use facial
expressions, lips, ears and body posture to communicate feelings. Dogs with long tails can communicate better, so they get involved in fewer fights with other dogs and are less likely to bite people. Tails also help a dog to balance properly and puppies with long tails are much more agile than those with docked tails. It is easier for a dog with a long tail to climb, crawl and balance.Some people believe a dog should look a certain way, but this is merely satisfying a breed standard or human notion of what a dog should look like. Nature did not intend dogs to have short tails or cropped ears and it’s therefore totally unacceptable to mutilate a dog in this way.“Money will buy you a pretty good dog, but it won’t buy the wag of his tail,” Henry Wheeler Shaw.Alberton SPCA needs your 5c coins. A cautionary tail Dumped: defenceless puppiesRecently the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) received two puppies that had been dumped. Both are being bottle-fed and cared for by AACL kennel staff.The first, a three-week-old Chihuahua Cross, was brought in by a concerned JHB South resident who found the little pup wandering in the street. The second pup was collected in South Hills after a resident called AACL saying it had been dumped in her yard.It has been reported that someone wheels around small pups in a shopping trolley in the South Hills and Unigray area. The AACL would like to make the public aware that at three weeks old or younger, pups are far too young to feed themselves. At this age, they have yet to develop their own teeth and should still be suckling off their mothers. Ideally puppies should not be taken away from their mothers until they are at least eight weeks old.If you are aware of those who are responsible for dumping these pups, or know of the person pushing pups in a trolley, please contact Inspector Rulof Jackson on 011 435 0672 or 082 892 2776.

Recent events in Kenya have had the world talking, but at the centre of the unfolding saga is a story closer to home than anyone of us could have imagined. A ministry responsible for guarding national security, our home affairs, was exposed to have been hoodwinked by an international terrorist group. The women at the centre of the Westgate bombing, British born Samantha Lewthwaite managed to get a South African passport under the false name Natalie Faye Webb. Samantha Lewthwaite (29), nick named the White Widow, is the wife of Germaine Lindsay, one of four Islamist suicide bombers who attacked the London underground transport system in 2005, killing 52 people. According to South African Home Affairs, she attained her Webb passport in 2008. A year later, former US first lady Hillary Clinton issued a warning to local authorities of al-Qaeda and other linked movements, such as the al-Shabab movement, using South Africa as a recruiting station.Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor has confirmed Lewthwaite obtained her passport under the false name Natalie Faye Webb. The false passport was found in Kenya in 2011 and returned to South Africa. According to Pandor that was the last of Lewthwaite’s visits to South Africa, due to information from Kenya that linked her to terrorist activities.ENCA reported that Lewthwaite, who has now been classified as a danger to the world, had also used the name Natalie Faye Webb to rent at least three properties in Johannesburg and run up debts of R183 123.
However, none of the neighbours at all those properties could acknowledge ever seeing or interacting with her.The controversy around Samantha Lewthwaite leaves us questioning the safety of our nation and that of other nations. We all know of people who enter the country illegally, but when we legitimise them by allowing them to slip through the system, we run the risk of endangering the nation’s security.

Merging disabilities and transport monthOctober is National Transport month in South Africa. During this month, everyone is encouraged to use public transport on at least one day. Many politicians, celebrities and prominent business people abandon their private cars and heed the call.This year, South African Employers for Disability (SAE4D), an employer organisation that is committed to addressing issues confronting the integration of people with disabilities in the workplace, is issuing this challenge to those planning to get into the spirit on Transport Month: use a wheelchair. If you don’t have access to a wheelchair, make the trip with a large, very heavy suitcase.SAE4D chairman, Dr Jerry Gule points out that while inadequacies of the public transport system cause inconvenience for most commuters, it isolates people with disabilities. “It effectively makes it impossible for many potentially economically active individuals to get to and from work. And it hinders many businesses that sincerely wish to employ more people with disabilities from doing so,” Gule said.It has been estimated that only around one percent of people with disabilities in South Africa are employed. According to Dr Gule, a major issue is the fact that only a very small percentage of people with disabilities have access to private vehicles. In her 2005 thesis for her Masters degree in Town and Regional Planning, “Investigating the public transport system in Cape Town with reference to special needs passengers”, Deidre Ribbonaar stated, “Society suffers
in terms of costs due to (people with disabilities) not being able to function independently in normal daily activities. The costs in terms of what society has to give are included in tax increases so as to pay for special assistance to a (person with disability) not being able to access employment opportunities because of an obstructive public transport system.”Dr Gule notes that as a signatory to the 2007 UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, South Africa is required to develop a public transport network that accommodates people with disabilities.“South Africa also has a plethora of legislation relating to the need to include people with disabilities
into the country’s economic and social mainstream, starting with the Constitution. There have also been numerous policy and legislative directives over the years that emphasise the need to make our public transport system more accessible. But this is not being translated into action quickly enough. Indeed, SAE4D is concerned that the Department of Transport’s latest strategic plan for 2012 – 2014 makes no mention of the needs of people with disabilities,” he added. “It is therefore vitally important we use National Transport month to highlight the ongoing exclusion of one significant group of people from our public transport system – people with disabilities.”

The Curse of the Lost Forest
Catherine Santa Gadd is a writer from Alberton who recently published an e-book called The Curse of the Lost Forest. It is a fantasy novel aimed at young teens.

The National Children’s Theatre, in association with Wits Drama for Life, are excited to present a selection of plays by William Shakespeare in new and interactive performances. The selected romantic comedies and tragic dramas include Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Merchant of Venice.National Children’s Theatre Chief Executive Officer Moira Katz said she is delighted that Drama for Life students will be presenting Shakespeare in the new Wynnstay box theatre. She is also happy that the team of 14 Drama for Life students, under the guidance of Lali Dangazele, will be using principles of educational theatre to infuse their performances with educational elements, thus showcasing a new approach to set work presentation in South Africa. Guided by lecturer Lali Dangazele, founder and managing director of ShakeXperience and well-known South African actress, producer and applied theatre practitioner, Wits Drama for Life students have learnt not only to make theatre, but have also acquired practical knowledge and understanding of how theatre-making can be harnessed to
change lives and inspire new possibilities in education. ”I have seen the words being lifted off the pages of the play and brought to life in an invigorated way. I am very excited by the quality of engagement of Shakespeare in a contemporary setting,” says Dangazele. Off-roaders head to Balito Comfortable win for Springboks
Off-road enthusiasts had their eyes set on the horizon on 26 September in their efforts to raise funds for Quadriplegics South Africa (QASA).tame TIMES caught up with the off-roaders before they left for their 1000km trip to Balito.A delighted Corinne Andrews stated, “This idea came to us while we were sitting under a tree. We had approximately 200 people taking part in the first year. It is great to see how much it has grown. We raise an average of a million rand for QASA each year.” Andrews hoped to make this year their biggest year ever, since it’s the fund raiser’s
10th year anniversary.Ari Serlis from QASA said, “I am feeling proud, anxious, overwhelmed and nervous for this year’s trip to Balito.”“This is my eighth time doing this and I have learnt to never take it for granted. Always have a well-prepared bike with your mind focused on safety and fun. Remember that this is for a good cause.”Paramedic Steven Boyd from Events Medical and Security (E.M.A.S), situated in Bez Valley, will be accompanying the riders to KZN, encouraging everyone participating to “take it easy and enjoy the trip”.
“It is not a race. It is a four day ride that you can enjoy with your family and friends, so don’t endanger your lives but still have fun,” he added.Participants will be exploring places that most people who live in SA will never get to see. The ride changes every day and has a few new sections that previous participants have not ridden before.
From the rolling hills of KZN to thick indigenous forests, rocky mountain passes, dams, rivers and beautiful farmlands, riders will see it all on their 250km of riding per day.
On Saturday evening the Springboks ensured that the Wallabies’
dismal run continues, as they lambasted their Australian rivals 28-8. The Boks scored their three tries within the first and last quarters of the game. Unfortunately they failed to score a fourth try in order to obtain that vital bonus point. Now we will have to beat New Zealand in next weekend’s final showdown by scoring at least four tries and simultaneously winning by a margin larger than 7 points. This will be no easy feat, however we have everything in our arsenal to outplay and outsmart the Kiwis.A noteworthy positive is that our backline showed moments of brilliance with absolute superb handling and ball spreading. The second try from the Boks oozed with pure class and it is a certainty that all fans will be wanting to see a similar approach in times to come. Adriaan Strauss is one of the hardest working rugby players in the world, but one can hardly deny that Bismarck du Plessis is in a league of his own. We ought to see the Natal-based player wearing the nr 2 jersey on Saturday. It’s time for the Boks to put on their big-boy pants and show that they have that much needed big match temperament. The encounter at Ellis Park this coming weekend is one of the most anticipated rugby matches in South African history and we should see both teams go out from the first whistle with all guns blazing. Should the Springboks get their discipline in order and err more on the side of caution, they could have a firm grasp on this year’s Castle Rugby Championship trophy.

Lions feel the Sharks biteThe Golden Lions, coming off an impressive victory against the Blue Bulls, lost to the Sharks (31 – 25) in Friday night’s ABSA Curry Cup fixture at Ellis Park Stadium. With only two changes to the side which made light of the Bulls, no one could have predicted what the end of the 80 minutes of one of the toughest games this season would be. Going into Friday’s fixture, the Lions were third on the log and a victory over the Sharks, log leaders, would have meant a lot towards the goal of a home semi-final. The Sharks started the game on the front foot, applying huge pressure on the Lions’ forwards, creating gaps for their quick backlines. However, towards the middle of the first half the tide turned on the Sharks, whose early lead was stolen by the home team. At half-time the score was Lions 20 – 16 Sharks.The second half saw the visitors back in the driving seat and this time they would not take their feet off the pedal. Many of the Lions’ second half attacks were turned over due to poor ball handling at critical points. The Sharks’ only weakness was their line-outs, other than that they dominated. The Lions did however have a moment where they could have repeated the first half’s late st eal, but the ref referred a try decision to the TMO, which showed the Sharks defence hold the ball up preventing the try.

De Sa misses opportunity to shineRodger De Sa was on his way to his maiden local trophy at the helm of the Pirates ship, but his objectives were not met as Platinum Stars ended a seven year long trophyless run on Saturday when they beat Orlando Pirates in the MTN 8 Cup final at a rainy Moses Mabhida Stadium. The two teams braved the first half downpour and went back to the changing room goalless. Stars came out more determined and opened by scoring in the first minute of the second half
through Ng’ambi. The Pirates, who came into the game as favourites after beating Kaizer Chiefs (2 – 1 aggregate), found their equalizing late in the second half, forcing the game into extra time and eventually to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.Pirates coach Rodger De Sa should probably focus on his players’ composure and ability to shoot from the penalty spot, as three of his players (Mahamutsa, Mabena, Bacela) missed giving Stars a 2 – 1 victory and an R8m stronger bank balance.
