GEREPATRIEEROud-Dinamika leerling se lyk terug in SA

Lee Ann Palmarozza se lyk is op 28 Desember 2014 in ‘n swembad by Mauritius gevind.

Alberton High SchoolIn the early 1970s it became apparent that due to the growing number of English families in Alberton that there was a need for an English High School in Alberton. Up until this time the closest High School for English speaking learners was Germiston High School and many families sent their children to English medium boarding schools. It took a tremendous campaign by a group of involved English-speaking parents to have the province build a High School to serve the English-speaking community of Alberton.Associated with those first moves were Mr D Harris, Mr P Stathoulis, Mrs J Poltera, Mr J Scott and Mr R Greyling and a host of others. Alberton High became the first English medium High School to serve the Alberton community in 1974.Alberton High School opened its doors in January 1974 to about 230 learners. The school started with nine teachers and approximately three hundred learners, with Mr Tobias as the acting principal. For the first three weeks there were no desks and only nine chairs, which were kept in the

staff room. The learner had to sit on the floor around the class room walls.Learners of the school came mainly from Germiston High School. At this stage there was no set uniform and learners wore the uniform of their old school. It was from this very varied uniform collection that Mr Tobias decided on our school motto “Totumex Partibus” which means “The whole is the sum of the parts”. The four houses as selected by Mr Tobias were Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto and Vulcan; which were later changed to Walker, Struben, Harrison and Robinson in the 1980’s.Alberton High School was officially opened in 1975 with Rod Conacher as the first Principal. There was a staff of 28 and a learner enrolment of just 400. At this stage room E3 was used as a tuckshop and the rest of the E block was unused. There were no sports fields at all and sports practices used to take place on the piece of open ground two streets down from the school.By the start of 1975 such things as the

school badge and uniform had been designed and registered and the school began to assume its own character. The late Mr I J Joubert, a former Head of Department, Educational Guidance, designed our badge. The symbolism of the elements are: Key: Knowledge, the key to life and opportunity; Eland: The school stands on what was a portion of the farm Elandsfontein; Inverted V: The arch of heaven and a striving for ideals; Waves: The waters under heaven i.e. of the fountain. The first matriculants wrote the Senior Certificate Examinations at the end of 1976 and achieved remarkably well.During the next few years the school saw remarkable growth and touched on 1,100 learners in 1980. That was about the time Bracken High opened as the second English High School in Alberton, which took a lot of pressure off Alberton High School’s numbers and

our enrolment returned to reasonable proportions. In 1980 Mr Conacher was succeeded by Mr Gerald Kallman. After 14 years in the ‘hot seat’ Mr Kallman retired and Mr Minnie, took the post in 1994 until 2014.This year, Mr Olivier took over the reins. Mr Minnie has been on the staff at Alberton High since the 70’s. This year, 2015, sees Alberton High School celebrate their 40th anniversary.Alberton High continues to uphold the standards and traditions which began forty years ago, and will continue to do so right into the next century. As, in the past, the school has been committed to excellence and service, we trust that this will be the basis on which to build for the next 40 successful years.

{A note from the Editor}

I remember my first day of school vaguely. It was exciting, the entire Grade 1 class of Gnl Alberts Primary was amped and the parents’ tears were flowing. Some things seem to never change!2015 has officially kicked off and is now in full swing, the children are back in school, or started school, as you can see on page 4. The sports clubs are almost ready for new registrations, the last holiday makers are back at work and daily routines are back in motion. All of this is causing extra traffic, especially in Michelle Avenue. You can read more about the situation on Page 3. Our readers’ eye care is important to us and in that light, Werner Fourie has supplied us with an eye exam you can do at home. Go to page 10 to test you and your family’s eyes. The beginning of the year is also the time to lose those few holiday-Kilos - and we have just the solution - the tame TIMES 12-week Transformation Challenge. Report by SBV ServicesSBV Services has been providing business owners with end-to-end cash solutions for more than two decades and it knows what the dangers are – and how to minimize the risks that go with handling cash.“Criminals are working really hard to find more and more ingenious ways to rob hard-working, honest businesses, but there are a number of small steps that businesses can take to protect their cash and valuables,” says Grant Dunnington, the CEO of SBV Services. V i o l e n t a t t a c k s on South A f r i c a n businesses rose as much as 14 percent in the past year, according to police reports. Most of these attacks – in which a great many people were injured and e v e n killed – were aimed at one thing: relieving businesses of their cash on hand. For cash-handling micro, small or medium businesses, the consequences of these robberies (18 615 of them in 2013/14) are as obvious as they are often deadly – they can easily bring companies to their knees.

Tips to reduce your business’s riskAccording to Dunnington, basic cash-handling security measures should include these measures: • Use licensed cash-collection security companies to move and bank large amounts of cash, as opposed to sending

out vulnerable, untrained and ill-equipped employees to do what is a fundamentally dangerous job;• Keep minimal cash on your premises. If you have been robbed once, do not think that “lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice” – after your first robbery you are even more vulnerable than you were before;

• After hours, store valuable items that are normally on display in a

safe or vault; and• Make sure that your insurance provider is up to

date with your regular risk audits, upgrades or changes to your premises.

Tips for SMMEs• Do not let employees carrying cash wear uniforms or badges that can identify them with your

business;• If your staff have to move cash to the bank, keep educating them on the importance of being vigilant, even suspicious, at all times. Give them the resources that will save your cash – and even their lives – such as full tanks of petrol, cellphones and emergency numbers. Never let them take public transport or walk to the bank;• Use secure containers that disguise what your people are carrying, as opposed to the obvious canvas money bags; and • Continually vary the routes and times used to move cash from the business to the bank.

On 13 January at 09:40 a lone EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit member stopped a suspicious-looking VW panel van in Germiston. The officer followed the vehicle for a few hundred metres, when he heeded his cop instincts, closed in on the vehicle and stopped it on Jack Street. The dubious documentation that the driver provided, caused more suspicion and the vehicle was searched.A cargo of 1 152 fake ADIDAS tracksuits,

valued at more than one million rands, was found. A 28-year-old male Ethiopian national was arrested, although he tried to bribe his way out of the arrest by offering the officer R1 300 cash. The suspect was, however, taken to the Germiston Police Station, where he was charged for being in possession of counterfeit goods, as well as bribery. He is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

A reaction officer from Fox Security was shot in the stomach during a business robbery at the Engen Garage in Vermooten Street on 15 January. Two suspects entered the garage at around 02:30, demanding money and cigarettes. Fox Security sent out their reaction unit and upon entry, one of the suspects overpowered the reaction member and shot him, wounding him critically. One suspect was apprehended when he ran into the nearby veld. The other suspect is still at large.

A silver/grey Ford Fiesta was reduced to ashes on the N3 highway in Germiston on Friday 16 January. The 32-year-old driver’s vehicle had lost power and he managed to park it on a painted island with barrier lines, in order to investigate the engine. He wartched with horror as a spark came out of the engine and it immediately caught fire. He tried to flag down passing motorists for a fire extinguisher, while the flames became more aggressive, rapidly engulfng the entire car. In less than 30 minutes, the Fiesta was completely burnt out. It is not clear what caused the fire. No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.

The roadworks currently taking place on Michelle have caused many traffic delays, resulting in a few disgruntled road users. The section between the R59 and Johan van der Merwe Street has been closed after a part of the road collapsed.Rand Water is also busy installing new water main lines, resulting in only one lane being open for traffic.tame TIMES asked readers how the road closure had affected them.Loreen Fletcher said that everyone now goes through Randhart to get to Meyersdal and

Brackenhurst. She sat at the robot for seven minutes on Friday morning.Gary van den Heuvel said: ‘’I have avoided it. The other roads seems to be taking more strain. The Comaro Hill and Swartkoppies are clogged.’’According to Tersia Stroh, it is chaotic and Joane Licina says it has added an extra 10 minutes to her travels.‘’What usually takes me 7 minutes, takes me at least 20 minutes.” “I travel down Hart Avenue,’’ says Casey Wolstenholme.

OrionDag 1

Wian Muller is vanjaar Graad 1 toe. Sy ma, Tania Muller was 30 jaar gelede in dieselfde Graad 1 klas. Dit is Uncle Ben in Spider-Man wat sê: “with great power comes great responsibility”. Hierdie week wil ek graag saam met jou dink oor wat ons “great power” en “great responsibility” as gelowige Suid-

Afrikaners is. Dus lê daar “great power” en “great responsibility” in die liefdesgebod.Gryp saam met my die dag en leef aspris so dat ander mense deur my en jou aksies die reg om mens te wees kan geniet.

Carpoolinga great option

The New Year is in full swing and already you may feel that there are not enough hours in your day. One way of not only saving time but also money is by creating a carpool to make the school run easier. Carpooling is an arrangement among a group of parents in which each owner takes turns driving a group of children, including their own, to school.

Benefits of carpooling your kids to school:

ConvenienceOptimally, you could only be responsible for driving the carpool once a week which will save you some time in the morning.

Environmentally friendlyIt is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint and take better care of the environment. With fewer cars on the road, there is less pollution.

Saving moneyIt is no secret that petrol is expensive. With carpooling, you save money on petrol since you do not have to drive your kids to and from school every day.

Reliable transportNot every school has a reliable bus system. With a carpool, you know when the transport is going to arrive, and if there is a setback they will call you directly.

FriendshipsCarpooling is a good way to make friends, not only for the students, but for parents, too. For kids, they will benefit from being able to walk into school with classmates every day. For adults, the relationships established through carpooling can transition into very real and valuable friendships.

How to create a carpoolAfter identifying the interested parties, hold a meeting will all the parents to discuss and agree on the following:Pickup times and locations

Driving route It is a good idea to maintain a routine, with all parents driving the same basic route.

If there is an emergency, other parents will know

where to find you.Driver schedules These must be printed and distributed to all the carpool members.C o n t i n g e n c y

plans This is important in case

of sudden changes in driving schedules. If a driver

cannot make a day, it is his or her responsibility to swap with someone else.Vacation dates and arrangementsEmergency contact information and proceduresLate policyEstablish rules for late- comers and decide how long to wait.

Important Dos and Don’ts:Do not do errands when you are on duty - drive only from point A to point B. Pick up your dry-cleaning later.

Never use your cellphone when driving - if you must make a call, pull over.

Maintain your carMake sure your car is gassed up and ready for the road and keep it clean.

Lay down the law - on the first day you drive, spell out your road rules. Rules might cover such things as rough-housing, yelling and whether or not you allow eating and drinking in your car.

Password - if you are not going to be driving on a particular day, remind your own child who will be. Come up with a password. If every driver and child knows it, a stranger will not be able to trick kids into getting into the car on the pretence that he or she is filling in for the usual driver.

Pickup locationEstablish a pickup spot where all the kids wait together for the carpool driver.

tame TIMES is excited to announce our 12-

week Transformation Challenge, in partnership with Mr Martin Dewee. In the spirit of a healthy lifestyle, we will be publishing health-related articles, from nutrition to exercise. Remember to enter our competition and you could be one of the 40 lucky contestants to be part of this fantastic challenge. Who is Martin Dewee? I am a former four-times South African Natural Heavy Weight Body Building Champion. I took up boxing at the age of 10, relocating to Johannesburg nine years later where I turned pro. My boxing career was cut short, because I became a fashion model and actor, and eventually worked on 11 international movies. After winning my natural bodybuilding titles, I began my anti-drug road shows throughout high schools in South Africa, speaking to over 350 000 youngsters on the dangers of steroids and recreational drugs. One of the many highlights during this period was receiving the Alberton Senior Sportsman of the Year award, which was presented to me by Fanie de Villiers.

I published my fi rst book, Drug

Free Muscle Training in 2004, and my latest book Slowing Down Father Time and two training DVDs during 2014. [Check out Martin Dewee YouTube or Google]I am proud to say that I will be writing a variety of health and wellness articles on a weekly basis for the readers of the tame TIMES. These articles will cover subjects like nutrition, training, supplements, injury prevention and rehabilitation. The controversial use of performance-enhancing drugs by many young rugby players will also be discussed and there will be training tips for females, teenagers and senior citizens. I am very excited about the 2015 tame TIMES 12- week Transformation Body Challenge which will offi cially kick off on 16 February 2015. A number of private gyms throughout Alberton and the South have collectively agreed to allow members of the public a three-month contract at a lower than normal rate. This challenge is open to all readers of tame TIMES, and 40 lucky readers will be sponsored with a 3-month gym contract, a starter pack consisting of a male or female training DVD, training manual and health nutritional plan. For more details on this transformation challenge go to www.tametimes.co.za.

All boys school now open

St Declan’s School for Boys offi cially opened its doors on 13 January by hosting an inauguration ceremony where principal, Roger Looyen, cut the ribbon. All the boys had a special welcome, with each of their names engraved on a rock that was scattered down the aisle of the hall. Looyen later said these rocks would become sacred as they held the names of the fi rst boys who ever attended St Declan’s. Grace Trinity, their sister school, also added to the loving welcome as each Grace Trinity teacher wore a shirt with the words, “Big Sister to a little Mister.” Their big sisters in the Grace Trinity Glee choir even sang Katy Perry’s “Roar” to make them feel

valued and welcomed.Reverend Duncan Muller prayed over the children as well as the teachers and said a boy needs a true north and that goes hand in hand with St Declan’s chosen verse Proverbs 3:6: “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.”After all the formalities the boys went up to their classrooms to meet their teachers and get acquainted before school commenced the next day. St Declan’s focus is on monastic schooling, as owners Derek and Debbie Robertson believe the best academic results are achieved this way.

After all the sun, sea and ice-cream, it is time for your kids to go BACK TO SCHOOL. Your to-do list for 2015 should look something like this:• Eye exam• Backpack• Pens & Pencils• Crayons• BooksIt is said that up to 80% of the learning a child does occurs through his or her eyes. That is why good eye-sight is important and why it is suggested that children should have their eyes examined every year. Some of the things that will be tested at the optometrist may include, but not be limited, to the following:• Near vision • Distance vision• Binocular (two eyes) coordination • Eye movement skills• Focussing skills • Peripheral awareness• Hand-eye coordination • Ocular health It is good to be on the lookout for the following symptoms that may show your child may be in need of vision correction or visual training:• Frequent eye rubbing or blinking • Short attention span• Avoiding reading and other close activities• Frequent headaches • Covering one eye• Tilting the head to one side • Seeing double• Holding reading materials close to the face• An eye turning in or out • Losing place when reading• Difficulty remembering what he or she readIt is important to note that a child does not have to be able to read or write to have their vision assessed and eyes tested. For more information on children’s vision contact your optometrist or The Eyewear Boutique on 011 869 9705.

Distance vision screening instruction:1. Place yourself 3 metres (or 12 feet) away from the newspaper (chart)2. Test one eye at a time. 3. Start with the right eye, covering the left one without pressing on it. Then, examine the left eye by doing the opposite. If you are using correction glasses, you can cover the eye with a sheet of paper.4. Read the letters from the largest to the smallest. 5. To make the examination easier and faster, another person can help you by pointing at each line in turn.6. If you can read the letters of the 8th line, your sight is optimal (visual acuity 20/20).7. If your visual acuity is less than 20/20 or if you have doubts about your sight, visit your optometrist*NOTE: take the results as a recommendation. The results do not indicate any sort of diagnosis whatsoever. Performing the test does not mean you should skip regular visits to your optometrist, because you could easily miss signs that only a trained eye-care practitioner would find.

Getting your dream job…Prepare properly

Job interviews can be the most stressful part of the application process, but with a few key preparation strategies, anyone can shine in the hot seat. Good preparation is essential since you only have one chance to make a good first impression.

Pick what you are going to wear- Make sure your outfit is clean and pressed.- Try it on ahead of time to make sure it fits.

Practise greeting your interviewer- A friendly smile and firm handshake is a positive way to start the interview.

Study your resume- It is all your interviewer has to go by on order to get to know you. You may be asked to elaborate on some aspects.

Practise your answers to the most common interview questions- These include, “Tell me more about yourself” and “Why do you think you would be great for this job?” - Do not memorize answers to these questions since you do not want to sound rehearsed.

Research the company and job position you are applying for- Write down any questions you might have and do not be afraid to ask them during your interview.

Taking hands: Little Kickers and Rovers Football Club

Little Kickers and Rovers Football Club have taken hands in a bid to prepare children for their soccer careers.Little Kickers is a sports-orientated initiative that took off around the world with a programme carefully constructed to reflect their unique ‘’Play not Push’’ commitment. It involves a positive, fun-filled programme executed in a friendly, pressure-free environment.Invaluable social skills like listening, sharing, taking turns and teamwork are woven into an programme that places as much emphasis

on simple learning concepts like colours and numbers as it does on fine-tuning a child’s basic balance, agility and coordination.Children from the age of 18 months to 6 years can enjoy a safe, non-competitive programme which always stays within the student’s comfort zone.Rovers Football Club is a social junior club based at the ECW College in Brackendowns. Their vision is to provide a fun place for children to go and play soccer. Their focus is to involve people from the community in a structured, fun and energetic environment.

Rovers Football Club also takes part in local tournaments and encourages parents to get involved with their children’s football at match-days as well as tournaments.According to Warrick Atmore from Rovers Football Club, Little Kickers is a wonderful place for children to learn the fundamentals of soccer. By the time they reach a club like Rovers, these children will already know how to handle a soccer ball.Cristina Paul says that they are also taking on children with development issues, as the

Little Kickers Programme is excellent for motor skills development.Registration for both Little Kickers and Rovers Football Club will take place on Saturday 31 January at the ECW College grounds. Training will start on 2 February for Rovers and the Little Kickers will kick off on 4 February.

For more information, contact Cristina Paul on 079 701 8529, [email protected] or Warrick Atmore on 082 765 9225.
