A neighbour told tame TIMES that, after hearing her domestic worker scream, she went outside and, on seeing flames, thought her neighbour’s house was on fire. So she ran next door and found Jenny standing in the driveway, with her face blackened and her hair singed. According to the neighbour, Jenny told her that it was the gardener who had set her alight because he blamed her for being fired earlier that week. Jenny is a tenant who lived in the house with owner Milly Clark. Jenny’s landlady Milly Clark explained to tame TIMES that they had had problems with the gardener for a few weeks. “We had a temporary agreement that he could stay on my premises, as he had nowhere else to go. This was almost a year and a half ago,” she said. On 15 July Jenny told Milly that he swore at her, and that she was very concerned. The following Saturday, 19 July, Milly asked him to leave the premises, and he asked her to give him three days to find another place. When Milly found him drunk on her property on Tuesday 22 July, she asked him to leave before the end of the day. According to Milly, he came back on Wednesday evening. On Thursday morning Jenny was about to leave for work when the gardener approached her with petrol and blamed her for getting him fired, then poured the petrol over her vehicle and set it alight. Neighbours phoned the Fire Department and SAPS, and another resident took Jenny to hospital. She suffered severe burn wounds to her face, chest and arms; her throat and lungs were also damaged. Milly said that the suspect had called and threatened her, saying that if she did not give him money he would do the same to her and her car. After a two-day search, SOG Security tracked the suspect down in South Crest on Friday 25 July. He appeared at Palm Ridge Court on Monday. 13-year-old found through diaryA minor, who went missing at the end of June, has recently been found in the company of an older man.It has been confirmed that the man appeared in court on charges of abduction and statutory rape. The minor has been placed in a place of safekeeping. It has been reported that the minor had

been planning to run away from home for the past few months. Notes in her diary assisted in leading search teams to the property where she was found. It is alleged that the man whom she had contact with, was involved with a satanic group and was in possession of ritual candles and pornographic material.

Sisinyane Gleanar Ndumo celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday 17 July, a day before world icon Nelson Mandela’s birthday, at her home at Nhlapho section in Katlehong.Ndumo was very happy to share her birthday with Ward Councillor Londi Nkosi who turned 39 on the same day. The two were also honoured by the presence of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele, who wished them both a happy birthday and gave Gogo Ndumo a blanket as a gift.Speaking on her birthday, Ndumo said, “If people are taking care of themselves they will also reach 100 years.”Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni Mayor said, “We are honouring Ndumo because she is an

inspiration to us, as she represents resilience that she has finished 100 years. Ndumo is also reminding us of the importance of taking care of ourselves by eating well and living healthy lifestyles. We have to remember the elderly people by looking after them, because if we don’t we are contributing to a distorted history”.

EditorA Note from the

Sometimes we wonder why certain things happen in this world. What drives people to make the decisions they make? I suppose we will never understand everything, but some questions did bug me the past week. Why did the gardener decide to set a person on fire in a car, and why did the young girl decide to run away with a much older man?I always try to be a positive person, but the past week got to me and I had to remind myself that my happiness depends only on myself, and, of course, my faith in God. No matter how hard people try to get you down, it is still up to you to not let it get to you.

of good foodA promise

Established for 35 years, the Promise Grill in Meyersdal has found the recipe for success. It is one of the oldest restaurants serving the Alberton community.

This well-known restaurant, with its sophisticated décor and home-style atmosphere, has been owned and managed by Yianni Fotou and his wife Androulla for the past 27 years, and tame TIMES recently had the opportunity of experiencing their delectable Sunday Buffet. On our arrival we were greeted by the friendly and helpful staff and we noticed that the restaurant was already filled with satisfied guests enjoying the perfectly cooked buffet. This consisted of roasted beef, pork, lamb and chicken, as well as chicken livers, fish, rice, potatoes, pumpkin, spinach, pasta and - of course – some really great desserts.

The Promise Grill offers all of this for the great price of R99.95, and you can eat as much as you like. The rest of their menu most definitely lives up to their motto of “Promise good food” with their specialities of seafood, steakhouse grill, glazed duck, burgers and more. They have now also added various game dishes to their menu. You can choose from a variety of good quality wines from their temperature-controlled wine cellar. The Promise Grill restaurant offers a private function room seating 60 to 80 guests at no venue cost. They also have a licensed bar area for an afternoon drink and delicious bar lunches.

The Promise Grill is situated on the corner of Michelle Avenue and Hennie Alberts. They are open Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 22:00 and on Sunday from 12:00

to 20:00. Contact them on 011 867 6571.

Make food security possible

Nelson Mandela believed in the power of women and in the crucial role they play in creating change and developing communities. The Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) strives to honour his legacy by empowering, growing and encouraging young women from all corners of South Africa through environmental education about sustainable lifestyles and by harnessing their passion for this country’s future.

“It starts by turning the talk into action. Young women are the movers and shakers of our community and the mothers of our future leaders, it is our responsibility to nurture them,” said the Executive Director of the Miss Earth Africa leadership programme Catherine Constantinides. The MESA team spent their Mandela Day working in Orange Farm at the four-year-old school Solwazi Primary School. Constantinides had initiated this project

with one goal in mind: Make Food Security Possible. So, on 18 July, joining hands to plant a food garden and paint classrooms was the objective. The vegetable garden was set up using old tyres donated by Imperial Toyota, Lombard tyres and Redisa. Redisa has to date saved 26 388 tons of waste tyres from landfill sites and burning, saying; “We’re all happy to use tyres, but don’t give any thought to what happens to them when they reach the end of their useful life.” The MESA team and the Mandela Day volunteers found a use for these tyres with contributions from the Fourways Farmers Market, GroMor and Earth Outdoor Living Nursery. The vegetables will be used in the school’s feeding scheme. Classrooms were upgraded and painted to create a conducive learning environment with non-toxic, non-flammable paint sponsored by Green Coat Eco Paint. Meals on Wheels provided a hot lunch for community members; and food hampers and fruit packs were collected by each of this year’s MESA National Finalists.

For more information please contact Earth House at [email protected] or call Georgina Cost on 082 505 0664.

Mind, body and soul with God in it“It is paramount to keep these three quadrants in ones life “equally happy” and in sync,” says Desiree Oliphant, Mrs UN SA finalist, who also practises Hot Yoga.“It is absolutely important for me to know and understand how to be one with Christ my Lord and Saviour (as I am a Christian) and through any journey you travel on, on this road called life, you must be able to embody the mind, the body and the soul ‘spiritually’ first,” she explained. For her, it is vital to be rooted and grounded in her spirituality, her religion and her local church, so the mind, body and soul is fed and stays connected to God.She also feels strongly that it is imperative to renew one’s mind daily by reading the Word of God, as this way the soul and spirit stay connected to the Holy Spirit, and the body is the vessel that houses all of the above and needs to stay physically active, healthy and whole. Hot Yoga is her favourite outlet. As a finalist for Mrs UN SA 2014/15, given her hectic schedule, as mom and business woman, it is

in the “stillness of this specific exercise that her mind, body and soul re-connect.” “I communicate with God at a much deeper level every time and through it all I ‘hear’ my soul breathe a breath of fresh air,” she said.

SPIRITUAL: Desiree Oliphant, Mrs UN SA finalist.

No pity for copper thiefDanny writes:

‘Darwin Award’ writes:

Helen Malin writes:

With reference to the article Copper thief electrocuted (22 july). I personally agree that that person should have not received any medical attention at all. He knew exactly what he was doing was wrong and dangerous so therefore he

made his own bed and he should lie in it. These thieves must deal with the pain and suffering that they cause other residents by continuously stealing cables. I feel no pity for what happened as I hope next time he will think twice before stealing cables again.

lewe.Dink vandag bietjie oor die openingswoorde van Dawid se gebed: “U ken my”. Hoeveel anders sal my persoonlike gebed wees as ek begin bid met hierdie bewustheid?

ag shame. if they (probably illegal immigrants) don’t want to get electrocuted, then they must stop stealing electric cables. To crown it all, my tax money is then used to pay for their hospitalisation. Drive along the N17 highway towards JHB. If you pay close attention, on your left you will notice parts of the fencing has been stolen to be sold as scrap metal. On your right you will notice that large portions of the concrete palisade fence (Eskom property) have been stolen. At the bend near Wemmer Pan road there used to be a very effective safety barrier system made of steel wire rope - no longer there. If the traffic lights are working for a change, this means that the cables haven’t yet been stolen. Turning right, you go past stormwater drains with up-ended plastic barriers in them, yes you

guessed correctly - the metal surroundings have been chopped out and stolen. On the M2 highway, portions of the steel barrier on top of the concrete barrier - missing. On this portion of the highway (passing the old John Vorster) some years ago, a fatal accident occurred when a bus transporting schoolchildren during the rainy season hit a drainage channel from which the covering grill had been, shall we say, removed.New legislation should be passed declaring crimes such as these acts of economic sabotage, and the death penalty re-instated as punishment. But, hey ho, this will never happen. We will just keep losing all our infrastructure. Now if only they could find out who mislaid the approximately 25 km of railway tracks reported missing near Nigel.I will leave that one to your imagination.

Theft all over our cityIn response to the article Copper thief electrocuted:

Letters in response to the tame TIMES article, “Copper thief electrocuted”

Appalled by SPCA robberyi was absolutely appalled to read the article about the armed robbery which took place on 14 july at the sPCa. How despicable of people to target such a well-respected and needed charity – one very close to my heart. The SPCA works hard to provide and care for

stray and homeless animals and how anyone could steal from them and their hardworking staff is beyond me. Both my dogs are SPCA “specials” and I feel very strongly about this horrible act of theft. All I can hope for is that the criminals are eventually caught and get their just deserts.

Beverley Moyake, a grade 11 pupil at Marais Viljoen, achieved SA colours for the U/17 SA netball team. She is Marais Viljoen’s seventh SA netball player since 2000. Despite this great achievement, Beverley remains very humble. “I felt nervous when I got there. When they announced my name for the team I was really shocked and excited. I didn’t expect such a great achievement, but I really hoped for it,” she said.

TOP PLAYER: Beverley Moyake achieved SA colours in netball.

I am a 16-year-old grade 11 student from Waterstone College and recently I had to do a two day job-shadowing assignment for school.I chose tame TIMES newspaper specifically because they are based in my area and they contribute so much to my community. There is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the local newspaper we all know. It is very busy and there is not one moment that passes by when someone is not doing something in order to connect with the community. My experience at tame TIMES was an eye-opener. It expanded my knowledge of the path that I would some day like to go into.Getting to spend time with everyone who plans

the newspaper was interesting as there are so many thoughts and ideas that go behind a typical newspaper. I got to experience Mandela Day in a very different way. We went to Resthaven Baby Sanctuary and seeing so many people contributing their time to a good cause was touching and put a smile on my face. Seeing and getting to hold the babies was heart-warming because they had gotten something that they are not given much of.I would like to thank everybody for making me feel welcome and for giving me more positivity and optimism about this career choice.

OUR LADY OF LEBANONMARONITE CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Early child development is a complex process, with many lessons learnt at this fundamental phase having far-reaching effects, including a child’s aptitude for certain subjects. One of the most important skills that will have a significant impact on an individual’s life is mathematics – the ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. Depending on the profession one pursues in life, mathematical skills are vital in problem-solving, which is why the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), through Engenius, is encouraging an appreciation of maths in the nation in order to prepare more citizens for a career in engineering. Engenius has gathered some pointers for

parents who want to develop a love for maths in their children from an early age. Sandisa Maqubela, who facilitates Engenius, recommends a few simple, yet effective ,activities that parents can do to increase their children’s love and understanding of maths, to reinforce the skills learnt in school.

LooSE changEMost families have a jar or a container in which they collect loose change. Over time, this container can become quite full and a task you can get your children to do is to count the money in the jar. This will give them a practical lesson in addition, and it will increase their understanding of money and

denominations. They may also be allowed to buy a treat with some of the money.

PaTTErnS arE IMPorTanTPatterns are a great way of learning, and they are all around us, in art, furnishings and even paving. You can also increase your child’s interest in patterns through activities such as jigsaw puzzles, dominoes and tanagrams. When you are in the mall, you can count the different coloured tiles as you walk between aisles.

a faMILy ThaT PLayS TogEThEr STayS TogEThErFamily games such as snakes and ladders, Uno, and Connect 4 can help children learn valuable skills in a fun and enjoyable way. These games help develop children’s counting skills, as well as addition, subtraction and division. As the children get older, as a means of developing strategic thinking skills, parents can introduce Monopoly, backgammon, chess and even Jenga. These can be competitive, so be prepared for some sibling squabbles.

BuILdIng BLockSFrom a very early age, children like to stack things on top of each other. Let your child play with mathematical shapes such as blocks, Lego and even Meccano.

These are very helpful as they provide the child with a concrete perception of shapes and space at an early age.

rEad ThEM BookS ThaT IncorPoraTE MaThSMake the kids connect with maths even in story-time. Read them books in which the main characters solve a problem using maths, such as One Hundred Angry Ants by Ellinor J. Pinczes, The King’s Commissioners by Aileen Friedman and Socrates and the Three Little Pigs by Tuyosi Mori. You will be increasing their aptitude in maths subliminally, especially if they struggle with it.

Show ThEM ThaT MaThS IS EvErywhErEIncorporate maths into their everyday experience; show them symmetrical shapes in nature, pricing in supermarkets, and geometry in buildings. Make up games linked to vehicle registration numbers on long trips. Count the number of certain models of cars on the way home from school. Teach them about time while baking – they can count the minutes while their cupcakes bake. Make simple tasks like boiling eggs fun, by letting them set the egg-timer. “As parents balance their cheque-books, buy shoes, measure distances and check their time, they should include their children in these activities, to get them excited about maths,” concludes Sandisa.

The two-month long tournament commences on Saturday and for the first time in the history of the competition these young super stars will have the opportunity to play some of the knockout matches under lights at the Joburg Cricket Stadium. While the final champions will not be known until 21 September, the top four teams of each group at U/13 level and top two teams of each group at U/15 level, will qualify for the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, thus marking 13 September as a red letter day. The introduction of the Youth LPL – an U/21 tournament which is co-sponsored by the Carlton Centre - will be welcomed this year. This will showcase many talented up-and-coming cricketers who fall under the six LPL franchise banners and enable them to pit their skills against each other. This tournament will take place on 22 August under lights in a festival atmosphere at the Joburg Cricket Stadium. Each of the senior franchises has taken

these U/21 lads under their wing and will hope to mentor them on the way to future stardom. A quick look at the history books of the tournament shows just how quickly the tournament’s motto “where stars are born” can become a reality. SA sevens makes history

On Sunday 27 July the South African Blitzbokke made history when they were the first team to beat the New Zealand sevens team in a Commonwealth Games match since 1998, earning South Africa a gold medal. After the Blitzbokke defeated hosting country Scotland 35-12 in the quarter-finals, they gave a sublime performance and demolished Samoa 35-7 in the semi-final.The finals against New Zealand was a great showdown between the two Sevens sides that are currently the best in the world.Despite losing their captain Kyle Brown after only two minutes, due to a shoulder injury, the team remained focussed, and a try from Seabelo Senatla ended the first half with a 7-all tie. South Africa kept their fighting spirit throughout the second half, with two more tries from Seabelo Senatla and Cecil Afrika, one converted by Branco du Preez.Without the conversion, the score stood at 17-7, but the Kiwi’s Declan O’Donnell broke through and scored another try for the New Zealand team, changing the score to 17-12, the final score on the scoreboard.

On Sunday evening, South Africa had won 18 medals in the Commonwealth Games - these include 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 8 Bronze. The Commonwealth Games 2014 will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 24 July to 3 August. 6 500 athletes from 71 countries will be competing, vying for medals in 17 different sporting codes.
