I would like to nominate Helen White from Johannesburg South Furries as a community hero. She works nonstop to help the people and animals of the South – she picks up strays and has them spayed; she takes them to the vets in the South to get medical

assistance; she picks dogs up off the street and tries to re-home them, and she feeds dogs, with her own money, and makes a few donations. She is really one exceptional human and deserves a whole lot of credit.

NOMINATION

Letter by Debbie Dollery

Hi Candace, my father Christiaan Ludolf Mackenzie was admitted at the Union Hospital on 25 March 2015 and discharged on 07 April 2015.He had an ulcer on the heel of his foot and we were concerned as it wasn’t getting better after administering various antibiotics. We took him to casualty where he was admitted. The wound was dressed and Dr Block and a Dr Savides were the doctors that attended him. While in hospital he even got dehydrated and was put back on a drip. Family members went to see him at least two to three times a day, giving him bottles of water as he was constantly thirsty. He has dementia and cannot ask for water himself which we had told the nursing staff. We never even saw the wound, as it was always covered. There was an indication that he would be discharged over the Easter weekend but they were concerned that no one would be able to come out to the home in Brakpan he is staying in. On discharge we were informed that a wound sister would come out on Friday 10 April to dress the wound which didn’t happen. After more than 20 phone-calls to different people on Friday we were informed that we must contact someone in Springs to do the dressing. Being Friday, no one could come out on the weekend and we were told to wait for Monday or to do it ourselves. I frantically phoned a friend whose daughter is a fourth year UJ nursing student to help. We were horrified when we took the dressing off to see how black the foot was. We immediately took him

to Sunward Park Hospital as I wasn’t going back to the Union. The doctors were horrified to see the foot and admitted him again. They operated on Sunday morning to cut away the black skin to see if they could save the foot. We were informed on Monday 13 April that they would have to amputate the foot, which was done on 14 April. We contacted Anneline Bester at the Union on 13 April and they said they would have to investigate. We were told that outside wound sisters are affiliated to the hospital and a Sister Michelle would have to be contacted. We were told this morning that the wound sister did see that gangrene had set in. None of the family was ever informed that this was the case and surely they shouldn’t have discharged him? I am very upset. In this country the service is deteriorating and we are paying the medical aid exorbitant fees that increase every year.

Letter by Linda Marshall

Dear Editor, I would like to wholeheartedly endorse the letter from the Goodwins regarding the car guards that have been dismissed with barely any notice – it’s disgraceful. Some of these people have worked there for 10 years and to be treated in this manner and be left jobless is totally heartless and despicable when all they want to do is an honest day’s work to provide for their families.

I am very distressed about this and will definitely not be doing my shopping there anymore. It just does not have the same feel. I got to know so many of these gentle-men on a personal level discussing their futures, hopes and aspirations and families – heartbreaking stuff. I hope whoever decided on this move can sleep well at night with full stomachs and not a care in the world for these great people.

Letter by Karen Pace

RYAN LOCKWOOD That is a difficult question

for me to answer and depends entirely whether

it refers to the laws concerned with the offence itself or the sentencing. In the UK, it was proposed recently to place a burden of proof on the male party that any sex was consensual. Whilst this is

well-intentioned I believe it would increase instances of malicious accusation which cannot be a good thing. As regards the sentencing of properly convicted rapists? I believe they should do the hardest time there is.

PATRICIA PEARSON Yes without a doubt!

COLLET KHAN Yes very, very strict! They take your life when they rape you, you have to live with it

MADELYN JANSEN VAN VUUREN Yes chop it off so they sit like girls to pee. No one will rape if that rule is instituted.

DEBBIE CLEENWERCK Definitely.

TANYA SLATER YES.

JODI-LEIGH PRETORIUS YES.

THERESA JANSE VAN RENSBURG Yes!

Should stricter laws be implemented for rapists?

One of my favourite novels is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice – a tale of just that. In short, out of pride and prejudice love is found. A man of wealth and pride, the dashing Fitzwilliam Darcy, falls for an intelligent woman, Elizabeth Bennet, beneath his class who feels prejudiced against him. With the latest xenophobic attacks, Austen’s 1813 title comes to mind and speaks volumes. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word xenophobia is described as “Dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries”. While I highly condone xenophobia, it’s a matter of complex proportions that includes issues of politics, tribalism, culture and socio and economic concerns. What’s sobering is that many people living in South Africa are calling for peace – just recently, up to 5,000 people took part in a rally against xenophobia in Durban following attacks on foreigners. Like in Austen’s novel, if one looks past their pride and prejudice they will find kindness and love. In light of this, I admire the Bahá’í Faith which proclaims an underlying oneness that binds all major world religions – all are connected through the unity of their originating source, and the similarities in their core teachings. Let’s all show some love despite our backgrounds, cultures and creeds.

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele has called for calm and tolerance. Speaking during his visit to some of the areas where the violence was threatening to flare up, Gungubele condemned the senseless attacks on at least three people in the areas of Makause and Marathon Informal Settlements in Germiston - calling these acts of crime. The people were attacked when a group of people tried to rob their shops on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. They were all taken to hospital. The community must work closely with the law enforcement agencies to put the perpetrators behind bars. Ekurhuleni was the most affected area in the country by the xenophobic attacks in 2008. It was in the area of Ramaphosa in

Ekurhuleni where a man of Mozambican origin was assaulted and later set alight in broad daylight and in full view of the public. “What is happening in the country right now is completely unnecessary. As a city we are determined to work hard with our communities to ensure that we put concrete plans in place to deal with any violence perpetuated against foreign nationals in the area,” said Gungubele, adding that the metro had already activated a joint operation centre to deal with the status quo. In 2011 the city held a cleansing ceremony at the Ramaphosa Informal Settlement in memory of those lost during the Xenophobic Violence of 2008. Other activities that have been hosted by the metro include a xenophobia summit, games against xenophobia

pitting locals against foreign nationals. “Communities must join us as government and NOGs in frustrating the efforts of those in our communities who are hell-bent in fermenting the flames of crime, hatred and intolerance,” called Gungubele. Gungubele added that to win the struggle against xenophobia communities must learn to live ‘in unity instead of tolerance’. “Unity is what must drive us. It teaches us to live in harmony with the acceptance that we all need each other to survive.” He went on to warn that the ongoing violence is not good for the economy of the country ‘because no investor would want to settle in an unstable environment’. “At the end of the day we are threatening the future of our country and its people.”

Joburg Theatre is proud to announce the star casting of award-winning musician Lloyd Cele in the international production of Let’s Get It On – The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye on The Mandela stage for a limited season from 07 to 16 May 2015. Cele recently won Best R&B single for All I Need Is You at the Metro FM Awards and says this is a perfect fit for the show. “Marvin Gaye has always been one of my idols, and I’m extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to portray this music icon on stage,” says Cele. Let’s Get It On – The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye is produced by Helpman award-winning producer Simon Myers and Moira Bennett from Room 8 Productions whose recent shows include The Man In Black – The Life and Music of Johnny Cash; At Last – The Etta James Story and Take Me Home Country Roads – The John Denver Story. This is their first production in South Africa. The producers were very keen to cast a local singing personality for the show and found their star in Cele. Cele shot to fame as the runner-up in Idols in 2010. He has since won numerous awards, including the SAMA award for Best Pop Album as well as being a Metro FM, Channel O and Wawela nominee. He’s also a crowd favourite at all major festivals nationwide. He is an executive producer and a diverse artist who plays guitar, piano, bass and saxophone. The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye is a two-hour narrative concert that celebrates the life and music of the multi-talented musician, singer and songwriter

acknowledged as The Prince of Motown – The Prince of Soul. The show features some of Gaye’s most beloved songs including I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, his stunning spiritual masterwork What’s Going On, the Grammy Award-winning Sexual Healing and many more. The show explores Gaye’s humble beginnings, his troubled relationship with his father, his search for meaning and the music that defined a generation. The voice that formed the soundtrack to countless liaisons in the 60s and 70s was tragically silenced thirty years ago – and the scale of that tragedy

is reinforced through the retelling of his story. From the opening number to

the finale, the show channels ‘the main man’ in a tribute that is more

music than musical, more lyrics than script. Cele will

be backed by some of Australia’s finest and funkiest musicians, The Funk City Band, and introducing Vika Bull.

Bull’s character is an amalgam of the three main women in Gaye’s life: Tammy Tyrell, Diana

Ross and Anna Gordy. Bull is firmly established as one

of Australia’s most powerful female voices having supported legendary musicians such as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Sting and Joe Cocker. Tickets range from R180 to R350.

On Friday 01 May 2015, Johannesburg will see the return of the Holi One Colour Festival, which brings together partygoers of all ages, races, cultures and personalities to experience an unforgettable festival of light, love and, of course, colour. Sharing the same message of hope and positivity as the Hindu holiday of Holi, this non-religious festival aims to unite thousands in an event that blends music, dance, visuals and performance art. Festivals are held around the world in every continent, including Africa, Australia, America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Partygoers dressed in white soon find themselves united through a rainbow of colours as every hour on the hour, a countdown begins, signalling the throwing of brightly coloured, eco-friendly powder that fills the air. Along with powder in five different colours, food and drinks will also be on sale, while a host of facilities will be provided to ensure that revellers are kept safe and comfortable for the duration of the festival. This year’s line-up promises to be even bigger and better than ever before,

with a selection of local and international talents in the electronic dance music scene taking to the stage. Setting just the right tone for this year’s festival are your MCs Morgan Beatbox and K@$his King along with several artists including DJ Fresh, Mark Stent, Ricardo Da Costa, Essential Groove, Vin GrooVin, Houseshaker, Royal K, Household Funk, SauBomb, Paul Bingham, Rocca & Martini, Jade Hanna, Eugene Le Grand, Sammy Dee, Peter Booth, JC, Jason La Roux and more. Tickets start at R250 per person for general access, with special colour packages also offered at R350 per person for general access plus five bags of powder. Doors open at 12:00, and the celebrations will continue until 22:00. Festivalgoers are advised to wear white clothing that can withstand a bit of colour infusion (getting covered in glorious colour is, of course, what this event is all about).

champions Day at turffontein on saturday 25 April is fast approaching and at the recent launch event the eagerly awaited champions Day charity Draw was held shortly after the release of the final field for the gr 1 sA Derby. The draw paired each horse running in the derby with one of the 11 communities who will be showcased on the big day in the popular on course Intercontinental Village. The communities will in turn each be representing a charity and a media partner. The derby runners will earn money

for the charity partners based on their finishing positions. Three other entities that will have a strong presence on the day, Ferrari, SOJO and Racing It’s A Rush will also each be representing a charity and media partner and were also included in the draw. There was much anticipation ahead of the draw and the representatives of the Ivory Coast were delighted when they drew the likely SA Derby favourite French Navy which tame TIMES was paired up with.

The money donated to charity will be allocated as follows: R45, 000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby winner; R30, 000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby runner -up; R15, 000 for the charity partner of the third-placed horse; R10, 000 for fourth place and R5,000 for any other finishing position. The 11 different communities in the Intercontinental Village will be showcasing their cultures through food stalls, craft, costumes and on-stage dancing. The dancing is always a hit and the vigorous Zulu dancers of South Africa always draw much applause. However, all of the on-stage performances, ranging from the graceful dance of the ancient Chinese culture to the energetic rhythm and bravado of the Scottish Highland dancers, is always much appreciated by the festive audiences. The food, such as espetada and pregos from Portugal and chicken satay, prawn tempura and curry and rice from India, is invariably mouth-wateringly delicious and adds to the rich vibe in the Village. There is also much to look

forward to on Champions Day from a racing purist point of view as the meeting features five Gr1 events and four Gr 2s, including the Gr 1 R2-million SA Derby and Gr 1 R1-million SA Oaks, which form the respective last legs of the SA Triple Crown and the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara. The connections of the Sean Tarry-trained SA Oaks contender Siren’s Call will be on tenterhooks because by winning the race she will become only the third horse in history to land the Triple Tiara and this feat earns the horse a R1-million bonus on top of the already lucrative prize money. The Intercontinental Village will not be the only sideshow entertainment on offer as there will also be trackside stalls and music, a mechanical bull, slides, a rock wall and a jumping castle and there will also be fine fare and excellent viewing facilities available in the various rooms in the huge Turffontein grandstand. Gates open at 11:00. Entry and parking is free.

pareto limited launched the NuMiracle maths lab at southgate Mall shopping Centre in Mondeor on 01 April 2015. This is the third NuMiracle maths lab in the country, following the launch of the first two maths labs at The Pavilion Shopping Centre and Westgate Shopping Centre. Pareto Chief Executive Officer Marius Muller officially declared the maths lab opened, with Department of Education, Johannesburg South, District Director, Chriselda Makhubela in attendance amongst other dignitaries. Pareto is South Africa’s premier shopping centre investor and one of the country’s leading retail property players. The NuMiracle initiative will see promising learners from selected high schools attending daily computer-based maths lessons after school at no charge, at Pareto’s shopping centres. The initiative is expected to help change potential into reality for young people, particularly in previously disadvantaged communities within the footprint of Pareto’s shopping centres. The NuMiracle initiative will work closely with Master Maths, a well-known and established mathematics tutoring organisation, to provide quality individual tutoring for disadvantaged learners who would otherwise be unable to afford private after-school lessons. Learning at the NuMiracle labs is reinforced and evaluated through a combination of a computer-based teaching system and constant tutor supervision and guidance. The learners will work at their own pace and at their own level of ability. The progress of these youngsters will be monitored and there will be certificates and prizes for students who show improvement in their maths skills. The NuMiracle labs have been designed to nurture a love of maths from 12 brand-new computers, which will accommodate the personal tuition of around 36 learners. Learners from Letare Secondary School and Letsibogo Girls School in Soweto have been selected to participate in the programme at Southgate Shopping Centre. In total, 36 learners from these schools have been chosen to be part of the programme. Matias Ncube, maths tutor, looks forward to welcoming the learners into the lab.

YOUR WORLD NEWS THIS WEEK

XENOPHOBIA IS CAUSED BY DEEP-SEATED ISSUES

‘’The intermittent xenophobic violence in South Africa is a result of deep structural socio-economic problems and often manifests itself in the big cities that have undergone a post-apartheid character change.’’This is the view of Dr Sagie Narsiah from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s School of Social Sciences, regarding the xenophobic attacks, reported The Star.“Unemployment, poverty, inequality and increases in the price of basic commodities, all those issues are now being used in a superficial level to legitimise attacks on foreign nationals,” Narsiah said.Narsiah alluded to King Goodwill Zwelithini’s statements that could have been the spark that ignited the recent violence. Without mentioning Zwelithini by name, Narsiah said: “Over a period of time, these tensions have been building up and we had some statements made by people in power legitimising violence to ‘get rid of these people’.“So I think it’s a manifestation of a deep structural crisis in the South African social fabric and economic formation. That’s why we now see this phenomenon of finding a scapegoat.”Meanwhile, the Royal House of Nelson Mandela and the Mvezo Traditional Council called on traditional leaders to avoid inciting violence against foreigners.Said Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, without mentioning Zwelithini’s name: “We call on traditional leaders to desist from inciting such shameful acts.

In Pongola King Goodwill Zwelithini makes controversial remarks at a moral regeneration event, by saying“We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries.” Soon after, attacks begin against foreigners in KwaZulu-Natal.

WORLD’S MOUNTAIN BIKERS HEAD TO SA

Over 100 foreign mountain bikers from 20 countries will be among the field of 800 for a nine-day tour across South Africa, the Old Mutual joBerg2c, which starts just outside Johannesburg on 24 April. The 900km fully serviced stage race will cross four provinces, more than 100 remote farms and the well-known Drakensberg mountain range en route to the Indian Ocean at Scottburgh, south of Durban.According to race organiser Craig Wapnick, there will be a dice upfront among the pro field but for most it will be an eye-opening ride across South Africa.“Aside from having the ride of your life through this amazing country, many people also ride to raise money and awareness for causes that are close to their hearts,” said Wapnick.Leading by example, he said, were the continent’s own African adventurers Douglas Sidialo and Sibusiso Vilane. Kenyan Sidialo was blinded in the US Embassy bombing in Nairobi in 1998, which left 250 people dead and thousands injured. With a few mountain bike stage races under his belt, Sidialo is now aiming to be the first blind person to complete the Old Mutual joBerg2c and inspire others to overcome their personal challenges. The 45-year-old will ride on a tandem piloted by his friend and Team Seeing is Believing partner John Mwangi, 20, who is also a former junior national champion.South African Vilane will ride in his capacity as a global ambassador of the 46664 Mandela Day Bangle Project. The Mandela Day library project, which is supported by riders under the Participate for Good fundraising initiative, has already seen R1.4-million raised and seven container libraries established at rural schools along the route.According to project Chief Executive Officer Robert Coutts, the libraries have already had a major impact on literacy ratios in those communities.Wapnick said the race was proud to have been involved with a range of community upliftment initiatives such as these since its inception six years ago.For more information, visit www.joberg2c.co.za, follow @joberg2c_journo or find the race on Facebook.
