T irunelveli is the land of karisal soil which is known for its water retention capacity making it fertile. Thiskarisal land has groomed many art formsin Tamilnadu. Proud of the rich heritageof this soil, we the Department of Com-munication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, consciously in-clude the traditional art performancesin our department programmes. For the

rst time, the departments KarisalThirai Vizha introduced intercolle -giate folk competitions in 2010. Kari-

sal Thirai Vi zha is one such programthat grooms the traditional folk formsamong the student community.

Chenda Melam, is a type of folk music of Kerala which is played

by a group of people. In Kerala this wasused in temples to wake up Gods (Palli-yunarthal) while opening the temples.The Chenda is a cylindrical percussioninstrument used as an accompanimentfor Kathakali, Koodiyattam and Kan-nyarakali among many forms of dancesand rituals in Kerala. The Chenda, asymbol of prosperity is known for itsloud and rigid sound rhythm. For the pastthree years for Karisal Thiraivizha we

had organized the Chenda Melam for

the inauguration. Kotheshwaram SreeMahadevan Chenndamelam troop fromKanyakumari is the team that has been

playing Chenda Melam introducing thisfolk form to many of the students in theKarisal Thirai Vizha. In Karisal ThiraiVizha, Chenda Melam is used to give agrand welcome to the delegates from theMedia and to entertain the participants.In 2008 we focused on Thol PaavaiKoothu in the cultural session. TholpaavaiKoothu is one of the most ancient formsof entertainment which is a real challengeto the imagination and creative ability of

i n d i -viduals.Besidese n t e r -t a i n -m e n t ,Paava iKoothus e r v e sas anappliedart, con-veyingm e a n -i n g f u lm e s -sages of all artforms.

Parai has always been part and parcel of Karisal Thirai Vizha. Parai has been a powerful tool to assert the rightsof the oppressed people in Tamil Nadu.Parai is now retaining its lost glory chal-lenging the caste hegemony. For thelast two years, we arranged street plays,drama, Silambattam, Parai and Kaliyal. Aspecial drama we conducted in a highly

professional manner by the studentsof the Department of Performing Arts,Pondicherry University. The body ex -ibility and vibrant sounds of performershad fascinated the viewers.

This year we have arranged asimilar programme from Shankarankoil,

Tirunelveli district. This wouldinclude Tamilnadus traditional folk forms like Oyilattam, Mayilattam, Kara-kattam and Silambattam. Thus, throughKarisal Thirai Vizha, the department is

being playing a vital role in promoting

the traditional folk forms which is atthe verge of destruction. In a generationwhere western dance and music gains

prime importance this gives us thehope that through students there alot of possibilies to revive it.
