Advertising Industry

Photography is one of the most important elements within the advertising industry. Examples of that will be in magazines, posters, newspapers and billboards. The purpose of advertisement is to sell the product to the target audience. A lot of money is spent producing advertisements. Generally, the more money you spend in an advert the more money you will make out of the product. In terms of photography adverts, the advert has to be appealing to the target audience. The target is to get it stuck in their heads. The advert has to be eye catching. On some of these examples, the photos are very eye catching. The techniques is to make it very memorable for the specific target audience.

A famous photographer that specialises in advertisement is a person called Jonathon Knowles.

Fashion Industry

The purpose of fashion photography is mostly to show off all the trends within the fashion industry. They will be mostly seen in fashion magazines, newspapers, etc. Fashion designers can get their products recognised worldwide. You will also see posters outside retail stores such as Vogue, Louis Vuitton, D&G etc. Models tend to be the most common way of advertising in the fashion industry. The models tend to wear the products. Fashion shows are also a common way of advertising products, in terms of fashion. In terms of photography, sex appeal is used a lot during advertisements in the fashion industry. The photos tend to be eye catching towards the audience.

A well known fashion photographer will is a person called Sebastian Kim.

Music Industry

Photography in the music industry is used in album covers, posters, gig posters, festival covers and also in the internet. In a way photography in the music industry involves a lot of advertising as well. The reason for that is when you want to promote a band for example or advertise certain gigs or even producing album covers. All of these things and events will need a source of photography advertising them and the product. Solo artists and bands always have a target audience in which they can advertise to. This is how photography in the music industry is very effective. Photos of artists will also be used in photography to help advertise themselves. These photos will tend to be eye catching.

Sports Industry

Sport photography is mainly used in sport magazines, newspapers, and even posters. Photography is used in sports to promote athletes. From football, basketball, tennis and so on. Not only do they promote athletes, they also promote other sport events as well. From what we can see in sports in terms of photography, the shots that are taken tend to be close up shots, medium and long shots. Shots that really in a way, advertise the athletes. Different sports, differs from different shots, for example, boxing would tend to have close up shots of the athletes, where as football shots tend to be more medium to long shots. In terms of the shots, they are very much detailed. They are very eye catching to the target audience.

An example of a famous sport photographers would be Bob Martin. Bob Martin is multi-award winning sports photographer specialising in shooting action, graphic and editorial pictures for advertising, corporate and editorial clients

Photo journalism

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism. It involves collecting, editing and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast that creates images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography, for example documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or even celebrity photography. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media.

Ken Regan, a photojournalist whose reputation for discretion earned him a backstage pass to the private realms of rock ’n’ roll stars and other celebrities, including Bob Dylan and Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Mr. Regan was the official photographer for the Rolling Stones on several tours in the 1970s, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975 and the Live Aid concert in 1985.

Fine Art Photography

Fine art photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as photographer. Fine art photography stands in contrast to representational photography, such as photojournalism, which provides a documentary visual account of specific subjects and events, literally re-presenting objective reality rather than the subjective of the photographer and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services. A lot of fine art photography are usually kept in museums and galleries for people to view and admire.

A famous person that specialises in Fine Art Photography is Ian Bramham. Ian's first love is black and white fine art photography and he has been deeply inspired by famous fine art b&w photographers such as Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna, Richard Avedon, Edward Steichen and Bill Brandt.
