Task 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution means putting the media text – in this case, our film in front of the audience. They help to promote films using the media.

Distribution windows are :• Theatrical release • DVD release/Online release through ITunes • Subscription TV/Pay TV • Free TV

Film Distribution Companies

This company is called ‘20th Century Fox’ and distributed the film ‘Taken’.

This company is called ‘Warne Bros’ and distributed the film ‘Inception’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

This company is called ‘DNA Films’ and distributed the film ‘Dredd’

Our Film Distribution Company

The picture on the left hand side is of our ident company and the picture on the right hand side the company that our film is associated with. Both of these companies will be distributing our film.

The distribution company ‘Warner Bros’ has distributed thriller films before and that also includes Crime thrillers such as ‘The Dark Knight’. I think that because of this, ‘Warner Bros’ may be interested to distribute our film because our film is also a crime thriller.

Audience We hope to promote our film ‘Inhale’ worldwide, not just

the UK. This is because if we have a worldwide audience, we are more likely to make more money.

People around the world will be able to view our film because we will include subtitles in the most spoken languages in the world. In real life films, they always have subtitles in different languages and we will be doing the same.

Marketing There are several different ways which we can

distribute out film. One way is by film festivals around the world. We can also make trailers and advertise on the TV to promote our film.

We can even use social networking sites such as making Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to promote our film. We can also have film festivals around the world and can have a film premiere in different countries to promote our film.

Self-Distribution Self-distribution refers to distributing your film yourself. There are many advantages and disadvantages on self-

distribution.Advantages: • You have full rights and control over your film• From the money you make, you don’t have to give some of it

away to your film distributerDisadvantages:• It’s very time consuming by chasing the buyers and sellers. There

is also a lot of paperwork involved.• Distributers have made relationships with buyers and so self-

distribution can limit your options for sales
