cube or square based pyramids)

! Student will be able to produce a plan/design of a rocket using some of

these 3D shapes

Assessment:

! The activity allows students to contextualise the 3D shapes into their

inquiry unit. Assessment is on the design they produce, and the

content they say during discussion.

Teaching focus

A: Chosen By Associate Teacher

The skill my associate teacher wants me to focus on is engaging the

classroom through out the lesson. She wants me to focus on using projecting

my voice and being confident while teaching the lesson I have prepared.

B: Your Personal Choice of Skill Development

The skill I want to focus on during this lesson is classroom management. I

want to clearly set boundaries and behaviour expectations at the beginning of

the lesson so that I can be in control of the class and if needed use

appropriate discipline strategies.

Background to the learning

A: Teacher

In order to teach this class I have used my prior knowledge of 3D shapes. I

have also used the resource of the 3D shapes from the classroom. I have also

used my prior knowledge of rockets and their formations.

B: Pupil

The students have been introduced to 3D shapes and have been completing

their inquiry unit on space.

Content of Lesson

A: Introduction

Begin the lesson by making connections with the 3D lesson they did

yesterday. Show students the following 3D objects (cone, cylinder, cube or

square based pyramids) and ask the students to identify them by name.

B: Development

Explain to students that today in class we are Rocket Scientist, and we are

designing rockets for NASA. In order to design a rocket for NASA we need

know the structure of a rocket. On whiteboard draw a rocket and label key

features such as nose, body and fins). Facilitate a discussion with students,

how we can use 3D shapes to produce a rocket. Model the design process

you want the students to use.

C: Consolidation and Practice

Students are completing the design of their rockets individually. Encourage

students to collaborate. Explain to students that they are to design and justify

their designs using the following process.

Name of Rocket:

Labelled diagram of rocket:

3D shapes in my rocket:

________: Why have I used that shape?

________: Why have I used that shape?

________: Why have I used that shape?

Early Finishers- Extension Activities

! Students can begin to cut out their 3D shapes, which they will turn into

a rocket.

D: Closure

Bring all the students to the floor and share the ideas students had for their

formation of their rocket. Encourage students to justify why they are using

particular 3D shapes.

EDFX316: Professional Experience- Lesson Plan

Lesson Topic: 3D Shapes (Building rockets) Date:

VELS Domain(s):

1. Mathematics

2. Personal Learning

3. The arts

Grade(s): 3

VELS level: 3

VELS Dimension:

1. Space and Working Mathematically

2. The individual learner

3. Creating and making

Duration of Lesson: Learning Outcomes/ Standards:

At the end of the lesson students will have built at least 2 different 3D shapes,

and creating a model rocket, which they designed, in the pervious lesson.

Indicators:

! Student will be able identify and name the 3D shapes, they are using

! Student will be able to make the 3D shapes and create a model using

those shapes

Assessment:

! The activity allows students to contextualise the 3D shapes into their

inquiry unit. Assessment is on the design they produce, and the

content they say during discussion.

Content of Lesson

A: Introduction

Begin the lesson by making connections with the 3D lesson they did

yesterday. Discuss with student that today in class they are making the

rockets that they designed in the pervious lesson.

Page 15: Task 4- Unit of Work · "#!$%&'(!)!*+&,,!-(%(!./!01(!2.''+(!34!&!5.6!7/.0!34!,8&*(9!-1.*1!:!*3/0./7('! (;8&/'./6!01(.%!

!"##$%&'()#*"#+&#((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((,--.-/001( 2"##34(56&4(

B: Development

Show students the 3D shape models (templates) and explain to them that

they are to cut out around the template, fold on the dark lines and glue on the

shaded area. Explain to students that it is important to concentrate and work

slowly, as it can be a tricky task.

C: Consolidation and Practice

Students are to decorate and make their 3D shapes using the 3D shape

model. After constructing their 3D shapes, students are to form their rockets

based on their designs, which they did in their previous lesson.

Early Finishers- Extension Activities

! Students can decorate their shapes

! Students can help other students with their 3D shapes

D: Closure

Bring students to the floor (with rockets), get into small groups for sharing time

of their rockets. Encourage students to compliment each other’s work and

discuss the 3D shapes they used.
