BLOOD RELATIVES AND A LONELY PRINCEDespite blood relatives and locals being told there was not enough space for them to attend, an hour into the funeral soldiers were still being drafted in to fill the empty chairs.

“It makes us feel like outcasts,” said Mandela’s niece Gloria Mkwedini, 38, daughter of his last-surviving sister and her family of 16, whwas among the family members unable to attend..The Prince of Wales cut, at times, a lonely figure. The heir to the throne was relegated to a seat a number of rows back from the front position that a senior member of the Royal Family would expect to occupy on such an occasion.

It had been suggested Charles would deliver an address to the more than 4,000 guests at the funeral but in the end no speech was made. Instead, Britain’s future monarch was treated to speeches decrying the evils of colonialism in Africa, of which this country was a leading exponent. The positive role played by the modern Commonwealth was mentioned not once during the funeral service, despite South Africa being one of its key members. The temperature of the occasion could be gauged by the fact that when the name of Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein leader, was read out as one of those attending it provoked applause from the audience.

The prince’s name was greeted with indifference when it cropped up, and that was only late in the day, af-ter batches of other names had been read out between speeches and hymns. The future King had to content himself with a trailing position behind the prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis, a Caribbean microstate. The protocol people at Buckingham Palace, to whom orders of precedence are bedtime reading, were no doubt ap-palled by this lax approach to international status, but there may have been more to it than simply a mistake.David Cameron received similar low billing when he attended the main memorial event celebrating President Mandela’s life in Johannesburg’s World Cup stadium on Tuesday.

GERRY ADAMS JOINS ANC GUARD OF HONOURSinn Féin President Gerry Adams has formed part of the guard of honour for Nelson Mandela at a ceremony in South Africa on Saturday.

He stood alongside members of the African National Congress at their farewell memorial service in Pretoria.

Mr Adams, the former MP for west Belfast, said he was honoured and privileged to take part in the tribute to the former South African president.

He was joined by party colleague Richard McAuley.

Mr Adams had been invited to the public memorial service in Johannesburg on Tuesday but was unable to accept due to prior engagements.

Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson will not be attending the former South African president’s funer-al on Sunday. A spokesman for Mr Robinson said he “was looking after executive business”.

Adams tweeted yesterday that Mandela was his hero and that he was honoured to be in South Africa.“We were honoured and privileged to be part of [the] Guard of Honour for Madiba today,” Adams said.

In the 1980s Commons Speaker John Bercow was chair of the Federation of Conservative Students which produced “Hang Nelson Mandela” posters. Bercow was secretary of the immigration and repatri-ation committee of the far-right Monday Club and wanted a halt to Commonwealth immigration. With the death of Mandela Bercow, Cameron and Osbourne all hailed him an inspiration.Mr Bercow, showered praise on Mr Mandela: “He was Tata, father, to us all. His extraordinary com-mitment to democracy, peace and the fight against injustice has motivated generations to stand up for freedom.”

In 2006, Mr Cameron apologised and denounced the Thatcher record on South Africa saying she was wrong to have branded Mandela’s African National Congress “terrorists” and to have opposed sanctions against the apartheid South Africa.Yesterday Mr Cameron led tributes to Mr Mandela a “hero of our time”. The PM added: “Meeting him was one of the great honours of my life.”But he did not mention how he had gone to South Africa as a 23-year-old in 1989 on a jolly while Mr Mandela was locked in jail fighting the country’s apartheid shame.

But former Tory MP and serving councillor Terry Dicks compared Mr Mandela to an Al-Qaeda terror-ist.He said: “They were just terrorists. No different from the Irish terrorists. Perhaps no different to those we’re fighting now.“Just a different background, maybe a different religion, but that’s all.“And a terrorist is a terrorist. I don’t accept this view of freedom fighters one day - terrorists one day, freedom fighters the next. No. No.“And if they had wanted to they could have executed him. Seriously. And then you wouldn’t have had all this fuss of ‘I can live 27 years in prison’.He was asked by Channel 4 News if it might have been better if they had executed him. He replied: “Well he was a terrorist.”

UKIP poster girl Alexandra Swann retweeted messages calling Mr Mandela a “terrorist”.Ms Swann, whose speech to their 2012 Spring conference was introduced by leader Nigel Farage, said: “Mandela is dead. Sympathy for his family but let’s not deify one who condoned terrorism.”She added: “Imagine if we sang ding dong the terrorist’s dead. Death of Mandela is sad but he did con-done violent, terrorist attacks. #Hypocrisy.”Ms Swann then retweeted a message to her followers saying: “#Mandela The dead terrorist.”The British National Party leader Nick Griffin managed to plunge even lower saying: “Ding dong, the beatified Communist terrorist is dead.”His remarks came after he sparked outrage earlier this year, as Mandela’s health worsened, when he called him a “murderous old terrorist”.

DEAD SIX MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED“The family must have known that Mandela would soon be gone from this earth, and indeed, as we re-ported in June, he passed away six months before the “official” press announcement of his death today.A court document revealed that Mandela was in a “permanent vegetative state,” on the same day, June 26, that the family was quarrelling in court over where Mandela should be buried. The court document said “The Mandela family has been advised by the medical practitioners that his life support machine should be switched off.”His family has always been extremely concerned over money, so much so that they refused to switch off Mandela’s life support back in June even though they were instructed by doctors to do so. In this way, they kept Mandela tethered to machines while they pursued lawsuits against him.Mandela’s funeral was planned over a year ago and he has been deceased for the last six months. Finally he will be allowed to rest.
