what is the difference between a vertical carousel and a vertical lift module ?

iin a vertical carousel, the trays move on rails, in a cyclical manner. in a vlm, the trays do not move

on rails. the trays are extracted / retrieved from the bays by an extractor-cum-lift. the latter

moves the tray to window where a person loads / unloads the trayy.

Some manufacturers make vlms that can work in 3 directions (depth, height and width), instead

of the standard 2 directions (depth & height). Example : multiplex sold by intech auto stores &

conveyors pvt ltd. See pic below.

When

the items are small enough to be carried manually and

the items are light enough to be carried manually and

manual labour is cheap and

simultaeneously, you wish to utilise the height optimalthen one should use multi-tier (more than 2 levels) racking.

As the number of tiers increase, the pickers have to climb that many levels and will be more tired.

Hence, in such a manual-access racking system, the max no of tiers is generally three. (there is no

technical constraint to have a greater no of tiers)

note that the storage systems shown in above pics, cannot store pallets.

Advantages of carton-flow over standard horizontal shelving

a.cartons do not have to be manually moved along the shelf (in case of horizontal shelving, the

cartons that need to be accessed, have to be moved forward manually). Hence, labour as well

as time consumption.

b.the depth of the shelves may be 5 times the depth in case of horizontal shelving.c.helps to implement fifo system of stock-consumption (ideal for an item having a shelf-life, for

an item having a limited warranty period provided by the manufacturer)

d.Keeps cartons within reach of the picker (picker is the person who accesses the shelves from

the front)

e.Picking (accessing for consumption / despatch) is done at the front of the shelf while re-

stocking is done at the rear of the shelf. Hence, there is no interference between the 2

operations.

f. An empty front immediately indicates zero stock {in a horizontal shelf (say of substantial

depth), the carton might be placed deep inside the shelf. The picker has to peer##

(look) into the

shelf if a carton is placed deep inside. If the lighting is insufficient and the cartons, the shelving,

the walls and floor are approximately of the same colour, the probability of the picker missing

the carton, despite peering, is higher than in normal situation.)

disadvantages of carton-flow over standard horizontal shelving

a.More expensive than standard horizontal shelving

b.Individual items having a large* flat bottom surface (*large as compared to size of the rollers

and the gaps between the rollers) can be stocked on these shelves, without the cartons. Items

having uneven / small bottom surface or parts that might get entwined with the rollers, cannot

be place on these shelves. standard horizontal shelving does not have this constraint.

c.Fragile items (glassware) might break while moving forwards jerkily.

d.A big carton following a very small carton (ahead of it) might slide forward angularly.

e.Cartons having open bottles / containers and thus having a risk of spillage of their contents

while moving jerkily forward, cannot be stored in this warehousing system.

f. Cartons can be placed over each other in standard horizontal shelves. In carton-flow shelving,this should not be done; else, while moving forward, the carton(s) above the frontmost carton

(x) might slip off x and fall to the ground.

g.Shifting of a carton from one row to an adjacent row by simply sliding over the shelf is not

possible.

h.The incline consumes some percentage of the height of the shelving. So, carton-flow shelving

has one / two shelves less than standard horizontal shelving of the same height.

i. Carton flow shelves require two aisles, one in the front for picking and one behind the shelvesfor re-stocking. Conventional horizontal shelving requires one aisle.

j. The rollers if jammed, need to be repaired. There are no moving parts in standard horizontal

shelving; hence, no need for such repair work.

Nilkamal bito offers to build automated pallet-flow and carton-flow racking systems for its

customers. The automatic replenishing / picking is implemented using stacker cranes. In pallet-

flow system shown in pic a, replenishing is done automatically by a stacker crane while picking is

manually done with the help of a forklift. in carton-flow system shown in pic b, both replenishing

and picking are done automatically by stacker cranes. in carton-flow system shown in pic c,

replenishing is done automatically by a stacker crane while picking is done manually.

Load house

Load house is a structure installed next to loading dock of a warehouse. It facilitates loading /

unloading of the vehicles. Thereby, space within the warehouse is now freed for other uses. A

complete loading house consists of a pedestal with dock leveller, wall and ceiling cladding, as well

as a loading opening with dock seal/shelter.

Dock shelter

It seals the gap between the rear opening of truck / trailer and the dock edges. Hence, it is also

known as dock seal.
