Intermediate W5H Tournament By: Anthony G.

The intermediate W5H team was very successful in their participation in the divisional tourna-

ment held at St. Mark‟s Catholic School. Unfortunately, our team did not advance and finished in fourth

place. However, despite the tough competition, we were not far behind the others. This year‟s team

consisted of six members: Matthew W., Matthew T., Anthony G., Joseph B., Nicholas M., and Brianna

M. As team captain, I would like to thank Ms. Pontes, Ms. Fernandes, and Ms. Lisco on behalf of our team for being this

year‟s coaches as they used their spare time to practise with us. As we progress into next year, you are all

encouraged to try out for W5H as it is a friendly competition which is a lot of fun and which challenges your mind.

Spring Fling a HUGE success!! By Amanda M., Cassandra H., and Julianna G.

On Friday, April 19th we had a wonderful family dinner at the Holy Angel's Parish hall. We walked in and we were all welcomed by the parents from C.S.A.C.! Then we saw all the silent auction prizes and we bid on

many of them. We even had some kids working at the silent auction tables. Everyone was working together to make it a great evening. After the grade 7 and 8 students served all the families at the tables an

amazing dinner of delicious pasta, chicken and salad. During dinner some musicians played instruments for

us. They were so entertaining. Then we danced the night away and had a ball! We danced to "Beauty and the Beat" Gangnam Style, the Cha Cha Slide and much , much more. Then at 8:30 C.S.A.C. people announced the winners of the

kids' auction. At 9:00 they announced the winners of the adult auction. We danced and laughed all night long! The SPRING FLING was a huge success and we hope that we will have another one next year!

Thanks to everyone that helped make it so wonderful especially Mrs. Medeiros and her committee!!

A word from Mrs. Medeiros—Our Spring Dinner Dance was a huge success!

The Holy Angels School community gathered together for a fun-filled night on April 19th for the first Spring Dinner Dance. Over 160 people enjoyed a delicious dinner and danced the night away with friends and family. The silent auction was a great draw as well, with many taking home fantastic prizes! The school and CSAC would like to thank you for making this night possible. Whether you donated a prize, your time as a volunteer, or bought a ticket, this event wouldn’t have been successful without your

contributions. See you all back next spring!

On April 8, 2013 Kenneth Oppel, a well known Canadian author, visited our school. Grades 4-8 had the op-

portunity to listen to Kenneth Oppel speak about his amazing books! One of the books is called Dark Wing

which is about a creature who lives in a pack of bats and he is the first one to learn to fly and all the other bats

wonder how he learned to fly so quickly. It was a great book because it was like an adventure you could visual-

ize in your mind. Kenneth Oppel also taught us that writing a book takes a lot of time. In order to be successful

as an author you need to put in a lot of time and effort! What also made the presentation so amazing was that

he made a PowerPoint of his presentation so that we could see pictures of his characters. He also made a few

really funny jokes, like when he said he loves the smell of books. Also, he joked that one of his creatures is made up of 7 pounds

of Kentucky Fried Chicken. He also spoke to us about some of the other books he wrote and showed us pictures of his office.

His office was stacked with manuscripts! And that was only for one book! Kenneth Oppel showed us some of the previous books

he wrote and we also saw a sneak peak of his new book which is about a speeding train. It was an amazing experience and we

can‟t wait for another author to visit us at Holy Angels! By: Sarrah H., Simona L., Amanda N. Thank you to CSAC for providing

funding for this presentation.

Reptilia by Luka P Grade 4 Mr. Sloan’s class

On Tuesday April 2nd, 2013, grades 4, 5 and 6 classes listened to a presentation from Reptilia, an organiza-tion that works with reptiles. The first reptile he showed us was a box turtle, no bigger than 15cm. The next animal was a baby alligator who, even though was a baby, was about 1m long. Nick had to put tape around his mouth because he might have bitten someone while we were petting him. The third reptile he showed us was a milk snake. Nick said that the milk snake is not venomous. However, the milk snake tries to look like another snake that is venomous. They look the same except they have a different colour pattern on their scales. The fourth reptile Nick brought in was a python. It was not venomous either. Instead, it was a constrictor. A constrictor is a snake that wraps around its prey and squeezes it until it cannot breathe and then eats it. A milk snake is also a constrictor. The last amphibian he brought was a fire salamander. Nick likes to bring in a bonus animal every time he visits a school and the bo-nus animal is usually not a reptile. It is called a fire salamander because when Europeans set fire to stuff, fire salamanders come out from the fire. The Reptilia presentation was great and I hope we have it again next year. Thank you Mr. Nick for the presentation and thank you to the TCDSB for the presentation!

Author Visit - Kenneth Oppel

The Good Shepherd by Alison A., Madison B.-D., and Lauren M.

On April 11, 2012, the Grade One and Two students were introduced to the parable of

the Good Sheppard through a presentation from Susan Whehelen

During the Good Shepherd presentation, we liked talking with Susan the presenter, about

the special meanings of our names. Some people‟s names meant flowers like daffodils

and lilies. We also enjoyed talking about countries we were from, most people were Ital-

ian. Some students were chosen to play a game called follow the Shepherd. One girl

was a shepherd and they picked 10 sheep and she had to herd the sheep. Finally we got

to listen to a story called The Lost Sheep. It was about a shepherd and his 100 sheep.

One night when the shepherd was counting the sheep, there were only 99 sheep. He

went looking for the lost sheep but couldn‟t find it. The next day he went looking again and he finally found the sheep!

We learned that God is our shepherd and always takes care of us. The presentation was fun and we enjoyed it!

Thank you to CSAC for funding this presentation.

Track It Down

In September, Mrs. Weston's class participated

in the Terry Fox run at their

school. They ran laps on the two tracks in the

school yard, a 400 metre track and

a 750 metre track, keeping a tally of each com-

plete lap. The combined tallies of

laps run by the whole class gave a total of 303

laps.

One proud class member claimed that the class

ran a total of 151.72 km.

Is this claim true, or false?

Explain your reasoning.

E - I - E - I - O \ Old MacDonald had a

farm, E-I-E-I-O", says the old children's

song. But Old MacDonald did have a

farm! And on that farm he had some

horses, cows, pigs and 69 water troughs

for the animals to drink from. Only horses

drank from the horse troughs, exactly two

horses for each trough. Only cows drank

from cow troughs, exactly three cows per

trough. And only pigs drank from pig

troughs, exactly eight pigs per trough. Old

MacDonald's farm has the same

number of cows, horses and pigs.

How many animals does Old MacDonald

have on his farm?
