Known | I medically as " organic brain syndrome , " the condition I translates less formally to " giving up ". The day-to-day j routine of an acute , general care hospital is not on a time schedule with the lonesomeness of geriatic dailiness. In developing the geriatic visiting program with the young volunteers , each girl learned from Mrs . Hrynus that a shortage of nursing hom e accommodations made it necessarv fnr nlri nationfc m .-ary, * .. -* ;•*. ^u« u„„„;f„i i * I - ,, ( / av. v.. w ,,„ 4 milium ui lut nua^ilal uc^ unu the acute period of an illness or injury initially responsible for admission to Brookhaven Memorial. They learned that as many as 50 or 60 patients fell into this category and their stay in the hospital often drifted into months. The volunteers learned that social awareness could be esta blished through simple eye contact, through ad- I uressing the patient by his or her proper name ~ Mrs Jones...Mr. Smith. Through reading, letter-writing tnrough caring for a plant together , through the amenities of applying toiletries , attention to the hair , doing a manicure , selecting nail polish color . The greatest treat of all has proved to be " going out to eat" which very simply has been a trip down one corridor , up another , or to an elevator and down to the employee cafeteria . One patient had such a marvelous time , she thought she was lunching in A&S once again and j " wouldn 't it be nice to do some shopping while we ' re j here?" j Some days the patients are taken out , in their wheel- i chairs , for rides along the hospital walks -- which are ^ limited . A lawn concert is planned for this month . ^ >/PMFJtW.lTB i..— ¦ ¦ ¦ um «..,miBn«wnMHii.ilu»M !¦»¦ ill I I IIMIIF UJMUHIIIH .!— nHU' .'nimunrwcT ^ !
