Before ReadingBefore Reading Preparation

• Engage students in the historical context of Mexico and Texas in the early to mid-1800s.

• Bring real life objects, items from daily life, images, photographs, and clothing to class.

• A few things you could bring might include a feather quill, some old maps or letters on yellowed parchment style paper, an antique oil lamp, shiny metal buttons to represent Mexican infantry uniforms, coon skin caps, a powder horn, and other items from the period.

• Use these items to decorate your classroom and as props to set the stage for the entire unit.

Geografía Look at a map of Texas. Point out the location of San Antonio. Then, look at a map of San Antonio and locate the site of the Battle of the Alamo.

• Alternatively, place students in two concentric circles so that they are facing each other (i.e. inner circle faces out, outer circle faces in). Move the inner circle one person to the left after a minute so that every student has a different partner.

Extension activity:

Have each student identify the student who had the most similar or different prediction to his

own prediction. They can raise a hand and have the other student join hands in the air to

visually indicate that they have found one or more partners.
