I. Introduction The Student Chapter at Tec de Monterrey was founded in October 2003. Located in the city of Monterrey in Northeast Mexico, Tec hosts important research efforts in Optics and Photonics. Currently the chapter is formed by nearly 40 active members, mostly undergraduate and graduate students from the physics, optics and other engineering programs at Tec, such as biotechnology, electronic systems, and mecatronics.

Since its foundation, the chapter has been very active in the promotion of the optical sciences in our institution, and maintained research activities in very good standing. This semester our chapter renewed its commitment with Tec de Monterrey student community, and worked hard to achieve the goals stated at the beginning of the semester. This report summarizes the most important activities and major achievements during this period (July-December 2005).

II. Chapter Activities Different activities took place during this semester with the aim of promoting optical sciences in our local community, and seeking to satisfy our chapter members’ interests. These activities can be grouped into the following main categories: Recruiting and publicity, Technical Workshops, Science Seminars, and Leadership. Research activities deserve an additional section a. Recruiting and Publicity Promotional Stand

One of the most important activities is recruiting new

members. In accordance with our mission, every semester we look forward to get more students involved into science, and become part of the international optical community. To this end, a promotional stand was set during the first week of classes. All students that stop by the stand are informed of the benefits of becoming SPIE members, additionally brochures with this information are distributed to passing by students. Each membership is accompanied by an optical souvenir such as a key chain laser, magnifying glass, diffraction grating, or a hologram. In addition, the new members are encouraged to take one or two of the past and current issues of OE Magazine available for free. This strategy has proven to be very successful. This semester 17 students became new members during recruiting.

Promotion of the chapter was also supported by

faculty from the physics department and optics center, who generously allowed us to visit their classrooms for a few minutes to invite more people to join us.

2nd Scientific Photography Contest

Another major event that took place this semester was the Second Scientific Photography Contest, which works as a double purpose activity: stimulate scientific creativity and interest toward science, and publicity for the chapter. On this second edition of the contest we had a very good response from the students; more than 40 works were received, including photographs from other campuses. Prizes for the first three places in the two categories, traditional and digital photography, were awarded to graduate and

undergraduate students coming from different areas such as physics, computer science, chemical engineering, industrial design, and optics. Funding for the contest came from different sources, for instance Student Chapter funds, and two sponsors: KOSMOS, which is a local supplier for astronomical and scientific equipment, and Dr. Luis Lauro Cantú, professor of the Physics Department. We were also generously sponsored for a second year by SOLGAR, our local supplier of darkroom materials, who donated over one thousand dollars in prizes.

Student Chapter Web Page Finally, the home page of the chapter was completely

redesigned. We launched the new version of the site this semester, although it is hard to keep it up to date, we think it is now friendlier, and it can be browsed more easily. We strongly recommend to those chapters, who still do not have a web page, start working on it. It is a primary vehicle for the dissemination of information regarding your activities and upcoming events, and it also helps other chapters to know who you are. You can visit our web page at:

b. Technical Workshops Graphing with MATLAB This semester our chapter members had the opportunity to attend the workshop on MATLAB Graphics by Dr. Gustavo Rodríguez. Students learned how to generate complex and fancy graphics using MATLAB, as well as how to format them to be included in a scientific article or report. The workshop was given as a 3 hours lecture with practical examples. Participants brought their own laptops, and we provided a printed manual prepared by Dr. Rodríguez. There was an excellent attendance of 16 participants, who pre-registered for the workshop through an online-registration form available in our home page.

Writing Scientific Documents with LATEX

The second workshop offered to chapter members was intended to introduce them into the world of scientific writing with LATEX. Hipólito García Gracia was the lecturer of this workshop, offered in two sessions of 3 hours each. Just as in the MATLAB workshop, participants were required to bring their own laptop, with the required software previously installed. Many interesting topics were covered, ranging from the preparation of a simple assignment report, to the more complicated ones like preparing an article for submission to a scientific journal, or creating interactive presentations. We had 9 registered attendees to the workshop, primarily undergrads from the 3rd or 4th years of

the physics program. It is worth mentioning that registration for these two workshops was completely free for chapter members.

c. Science Seminars Local Seminars Activities related to the promotion of science within our local students community include the organization of seminars with invited lecturers from different institutions. This semester the student chapter participated in the following seminars:

“Theory and Application of Optical Tweezers” Rubén Ramos García, Ph.D. Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Optica y Electrónica (INAOE) Puebla, Mexico (March 26, 2005)

“Ince-Gaussian Beams find the Middle Ground”

Julio César Gutiérrez, Ph.D. Photonics and Matehmatical Optics Group Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterey Monterrey, Mexico (November 4, 2005)

Attendance to Meetings

Optics and Photonics 2005. This year, 12 members of the chapter attended to the SPIE's 50th Annual Meeting, which took place in San Diego, CA. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of the chapter as a whole. We had the opportunity to share and learn from other student chapters, and witnessing their enthusiasm and commitment toward the development of the optical sciences was really motivating. Attending this meeting helped us to better understand our function as a chapter, also to become aware of the high responsibility upon us to serve our local community, and contribute to its development.

Educational Outreach

• Workshop on Liquid crystals The objective is to introduce K12 to the topic of Liquid Crystals by implementing the "mood patch" activity, using the materials kindly provided by Stephen Jacobs, from the University of Rochester.

• Open House at Optics Center

The Open House is a traditional event that encompasses several activities: junior-high school students take a tour of the Optics Center and usually graduate students (all Chapter members) prepare a series of short courses on scientific photography, holography, interference and several demonstrations. This event is intended to encourage the interest of pre-college students in Optics and in Optical Engineering.

• Research posters’ contest

The Chapter awards a portable computer to the best research poster presented at the senior undergraduate research project exhibition. If suitable, the students are encouraged to submit their work to and attend and international conference with the support of the Photonics and Mathematical Optics Group.

Community Activities

• Social Activities Contest • Physics Experiments demonstration at 16th International Book Fair, Monterrey,

Mexico

• Summer activities for high school students

• First Summer workshop on solar telescope construction (pilot) The most recent outreach project idea is intended to provide children of ages 6-9 the opportunity to make solar observations with the aid of a safe instrument they will build by themselves. The design of the telescope was developed by Chapter, and is based on a magnified image of the sun projected onto a screen. The solar telescope is suitable for observations during eclipses as well as ordinary sunny days. The workshop is divided into 3 sessions of 4 hours each, one for an introductory safety lecture, one for the actual construction of the telescope and one more for field observations. Construction is made under the supervision of trained chapter members.

• Chapter’s stand at 16th International Book Fair.

The Book fair is an international event of large proportions with an estimated attendance of 5000 people every year. Tec de Monterrey is the main organizer of the event, and we traditionally ask for space where we can showcase our activities and contribute to optics awareness in our community.
