Ummeed-e-MilaapWith the vision of uniting the young minds of India and Pakistan,

Techfest in association with LUMS Lahore, AIESEC Karachi and FAST Karachi launched the first of its kind student

campaign “Ummeed-e-Milaap – Indo Pak Unity”. We believe that the removal of common misconceptions that exist in the minds of the people could be achieved through an idea, technological and cultural exchange.

The initiative was conceptualised in 2 parts – Diary campaign and a Pakistani contingent coming to IIT Bombay. The Diary Campaign saw the enthusiastic participation of over 30 colleges in Mumbai, Lahore and Karachi with the youth unmuting themselves on their ideas of how Peace could be achieved between both countries. Competitions were held in LUMS Lahore and FAST Karachi which served as the qualifiers for the contingent coming to IIT Bombay. With a participa-tion of over 70 teams in both the centres, it set the tone for the success of the initiative. The impact of the initiative was there to be seen with a Pakistani robot participating with an Indian Flag flying over it.

Ummeed-e-Milaap has been successful in touching the hearts of many in both countries. Seeing the success of the concluded events, the initi-ative expanded and grew to emcompass the SAARC nations to build an era of partnership between the youth of all neighbouring countries. The final event would be held in IIT Bombay on 5th February. The events would include a Panel discussion, SAARC student conference, Technical Competitions involving the champion students of all these nations. With the kind of response Ummeed-e-Milaap received from the youth of both countries, we could definitely tell that the future is definitely in the correct hands and this initiative has been an effort in the correct direction and could strike a chord with the young minds.

Wave: An electric odessey in IndiaThe WAVE-India was born with the

mission of spreading awareness about electric vehicles in Indian metros. It

is a matter of disgrace that in spite of being a technological powerhouse, India ranks 123rd in the World in the Pollution Control statis-tics. The booming automobile industry is one of the largest contributors to the increasing air pollution in India. It is in this scenario that

electric vehicles are arriving on the scene to rescue the situation.

The WAVE is a road-trip of electric vehicles, covering over 2500 Kilometers through south-ern India. The cars taking part in the WAVE are, the Twike, the Twingo, two Th!nk City vehicles and the Mahindra Reva. They will begin their journey at Mumbai and stop at

major Indian cities like Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and also Goa. They will visit schools, colleges, malls, and places of impor-tance along the way. Interactive sessions and exhibitions would be conducted at the venue covering a host of topics like the various benefits of electric cars over IC-Engine cars and the future of green technology in the automobile industry

Ideate

iBorn with the vision of inspiring innovation among the Indian youth, Ideate, as the name suggests invited ideas that hold the power to re-shape the world we live. With hundreds of teams working relent-

lessly, with our pool of experts from academia and industry, towards their goals of societal welfare, Ideate has truly been the road from “Idea to execu-tion”. Ideate comprised of four independent events, namely, Earth, Elixir, Utkarsh and Inspire India.

While Earth has brought together hundreds of innovative ideas from every corner of the country and turned them into green technological innovations, Elixir has been nothing less than the magical potion that promises to save the lives of millions. Maintaining the belief that a social and economic revolu-tion in the country shall follow industrial and technological revolution in the rural areas, Utkarsh brought together grass-root innovators and turned their ideas into working rural technologies.

Here is your one chance to meet the Einstein’s of tomorrow as they present their innovations that might just change the world you know, forever and for the better, at Techfest 2012.

Techfest 2012 tried to take a step towards generating social good by moti-vating the entrepreneurial spirit among the Indian youth and encouraging them to work for the Bottom of the Pyramid. In its endeavour to help the true impact of these social ventures reach the society, Inspire India provides for its best entries mentoring support to get them on ground apart from the oppor-tunity of being funded.

Aldebaran Robotics is the world leading Company in Humanoid Robotics.Since its foundation in 2004, Aldebaran Robotics is famous as the crea-tor of the Humanoid Robot Nao. More than 300 Universities in over 30 Countries use Nao for Research and Education. The various applications of nao extend from Home Assistance to Psychology. In the summer of 2010, Nao made global headlines with a synchronized dance routine at the Shanghai Expo in China. Nao Robot will be exhibited for the first time in India. Catch the Nao robot dancing and performing vari-ous tricks at Techfest 2012.

Robocup was started with the vision: By mid-21st century, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer play-ers shall win the soccer game, complying with the official rule of the FIFA, against the winner of the most recent World Cup T’n’T Robotics is the 2 times World Champion of Robocup Soccer and is undefeated for 3 continuous years in Europe. The high speed Robots manufactured by this organisation can score more than 20 goals per minute in the Standard RobSoccer match.

ILeveraging the ubiquity and advanced hardware of mobile phones, EyeNETRA grew out of collaborative research at the MIT Media Lab to develop and dissemi-nate hardware apps – affordable and easy-to-use mobile phone attachments that allow anyone to measure their eyes and get a recommendation for treatment with the same ease as we use a thermometer. Having won many prestigious awards like Vodafone Wireless Innovation Project 2011, NASA LAUNCH Health Innovation Award this low cost health care device can cause a huge change in eye care for the poor in a developing country like ours. The University of Adelaide Diwheel, affectionately known as EDWARD (short for Electric Diwheel with Active Rotation Damping), employs the latest drive-by-wire technology (used in modern aircraft) and control theory to aid the driv-er in piloting the vehicle. It has additional functionality lacking in other models, including inbuilt dynamic lateral stability and slosh control to prevent “gerbiling” or tumbling in aggressive braking or accel-eration maneuvers. The diwheel also incorporates a unique feature that allows the rider to drive the vehicle when “upside down” – keeping the vehicle in its unsta-ble state is achieved using a combined swing up and inversion controller. For the first time a complete mathematical model of a diwheel has been derived, which will enable extreme maneuvers and tricks to be performed at the press of a button.

Full ThrottleThe roar of the IC Engines with the smell of the

nitromethane everywhere on the track. Your car in your hands as you set it at the starting

grid. Your heart thumping at a rate greater than the Revolution of the engine.

The competition involves remote controlled cars making laps around a track and aiming for the least time. The car will be judged by both it’s ability to overcome fierce obstacles and be agile at sharp turns.

Watched by thousands, the sidelines of the track are endlessly packed. A standing ovation is always visi-ble for recognition of a risky manouvre. Full Throttle need nerves of steel, the brain of an engineer and the pedigree of a champion at the same time.

ROBOWARSLoved Russell Crowe in gladiator? Budding engineer at

heart? Then Robowars was designed especially for you. Come out on top in this gory death match and assert

your supremacy as the most ruthless engineer all over India.

This competition involves designing your own killer robot with a balanced offense and defense. But don’t forget, the best offense is limited only by your defense.

The arena here is as impressive as the Colosseum of Rome. Fiberglassed, and extremely punishing on even a small error by the operator. The arena is cleverly sized, enough room for bots to move around, but less enough for lots of interaction, and literally, sparks will be commonplace!

Weapons include Burners, sharp rotors, pointy axe hammers and even flipper that get under your bot and overturn it. And the crowd just loves it again and again when a ruthless bot destructs upon a lowly. The crowd is so enthusiastic that barri-cades have to be erected to keep them at a safe distance.

This year Techfest promises to get Robowars to a whole new dimension!
