WPSINTELLIGENT SENSITIVE WIRE FENCE

Page 3: Technical Characteristics alone/WPS_UK.pdf · Technical Characteristics ... It is also possible to connect a personal computer to perform the set up, troubleshoo-ting and recording

The WPS system was developed from the requirement to create a perimeter security system that had both improved tole-rance to sabotage and detection of intrusion. It is a perimeter fence comprising sensitive wires run parallel to each otherat a distance of about 15cm apart and supported by posts arranged along its length at a distance of about 2.5 – 3.0m.The resultant fence is sensitive to the disturbances (cutting, climbing, ..etc) generated byintrusion attempts. The WPS system is a modular system, which can be installed on any size or shape peri-meter. The installation can also be on top of or in front of an existing perimeter wall.

The sensitive cable of the WPS is made with a stainless steel core and an active effectbased on the electro-constriction phenomenon. The stainless steel core makes thecable very robust and ideal for creating the desired fence. The active characteristic ofthe cable (ELCOS) is uniformly distributed throughout the entire length of the cablemaking the fence sensitive at every point. Following a mechanical disturbance (movement in the cable) caused by attempts toclimb or push it apart, the cable generates an electrical signal, which is amplified by anamplifier unit and then sent to a concentrator unit together with any cable cut or tamper signals. The concentratoranalyses the signals from up to 8 sensitive wires.

Control Unit (UCP)This can control from 1 to 64 remote peripheral (concentrator) units. The analyser generates all the alarm output signal-ling via associated relay boards. It is also possible to connect a personal computer to perform the set up, troubleshoo-ting and recording functions on the system.

ConcentratorThis is the microprocessor unit that performs the intelligent analysis on theinformation provided by up to 8 amplifiers and, after the analysis, to generatethe alarm signals. The analysis can discriminate between common modesignals (wind, hail, rain, ..etc) or temperature effects and genuine alarms.

Amplifier UnitThis unit contains the first stage of pre-amplification and is directly connectedto the sensitive wire, receiving the electrical signals from the wire and after amplification, sending them to the concen-trator. It can also generate a signal to indicate a cut of the sensitive wire.

Sensitive W ireThe sensitive wires are connected directly to the amplifier units. Each wire can have a maxi-mum length of 300m and can be installed in many different configurations dependent on theheight and length of the zone to be protected.

By connecting a PC and running special management software (Multiplex2000) it is possible to see the signals detectedby the wires in a graphical format. This display is particularly useful during installation as it can show the level of back-ground noise on the system. It is also possible to set up the system parameters while viewing on the monitor the signalscorresponding to different mechanical disturbances. In cases of nuisance alarms (not caused by a genuine intrusion) it is possible to use the computer to record the events.By setting a minimum threshold the computer will memorise all the signals that are above the threshold, together with the4 seconds preceding the event. The date and time of the event are recorded with the signal. This allows accurate analy-sis of the recorded signals and will give a better identification ofthe cause of the false alarms.

The Multiplex 2000 system is a communication network designed to integrate and control many different types of perime-ter detection systems on a single network. All the GPS perimeter systems can integrate directly into the network while thenetwork is also capable of monitoring the output contacts of any other form of detector or monitoring device. At the heartof the system is the Universal Communications Processor (UCP) which controls and manages all of the communicationsreceived from the remote sensor systems and then, based on the data received, transmits data to associated local or remo-

te output devices. It has two mainserial data buses, running at115kbaud, using a proprietary pro-tocol GPS COM115 to communica-te with the remote devices. Thesetwo buses can be independent orcan be connected in a loop so thatin the event of a single failure in theloop all the remote peripherals willremain in communication. Any sin-gle UCP can manage up to 64remote peripherals of up to 16 dif-ferent types, distributed in anycombination on the two buses. Insystems with a requirement formore than 64 peripherals up to 64UCP can be linked. Up to 24 outputdevices can be associated with any

particular peripheral, for signalling of pre-alarms, alarms, pressure warnings, faults, etc. The assignment of an output to aparticular function is controlled by software and is totally flexible. The UCP can be connected to a personal computer run-ning a Windows™ based software package, which gives access to real time sensor monitoring, sensor and relay outputconfiguration as well as save and view functions relating to the analogue signals from the field sensors.
