NABERS is a national rating system that measures the environmental performance of Australian buildings, tenancies and homes.

Zener drives1 provide an energy consumption metering (kWHr readings) feature that may be used to record energy usage of equipment within the associated building for NABERS rating assessment purposes. Zener variable speed drives (VSDs) are fully compliant with the accuracy requirements of the NABERS scheme Rules for collecting and Using Data, Version 3.0, February 2013 and provide an attractive alternative to installing additional electricity meters.

The energy usage may be read directly from the drive’s control console or more conveniently read remotely via a connection to a building management system (BMS).

In the case of remote reading (via a BMS), it is essential to validate the BMS and verify the correct functioning of the BMS in collecting and reporting electricity consumption, in the same way as other BMS inputs are substantiated.

This validation process is identical regardless of the data source, whether it is a Zener drive or a stand-alone electricity meter.

The NABERS website is invaluable for understanding the process: http://www.nabers.gov.au

Using the inbuilt electricity consumption reporting feature of a Zener VSD can be a convenient and cost effective solution that avoids installing separate, additional electricity meters with their associated BMS communications nodes and field wiring.
