Zak Scally joined Prospects College of Advanced Technology at 16 after completing his GCSEs at The Basildon Academies. Zak decided in school that he enjoyed making things and preferred manual work to more academic subjects, so saw engineering at PROCAT as the ideal route for him. He started on a Level 2 Further Education Engineering course and having completed this and the first year of Level 3, has successfully obtained an apprenticeship with Rodwell Engineering Group, a leader in precision engineering.

Zak didn’t have the grades to start on an apprenticeship when he finished school, so enrolled on a Level 2 Further Education Engineering course at PROCAT. He studied functional skills as part of his course in order to improve his maths and English so that he could access an apprenticeship in the future. Though he successfully managed to pass his functional skills exams at the end of his course and despite attending several interviews arranged by PROCAT, Zak was unable to secure an apprenticeship. Zak said “I get really nervous in interviews and I think this is what let me down”.

Not put off from his aim of accessing a career in Engineering, Zak decided to enrol on the Level 3 Further Education course the following year. During this course, Zak attended the annual Engineering assessment day. On the day, employers that have potential apprenticeship vacancies are invited into the college to speak to and assess students on full-time courses that are looking to move onto apprenticeships. Zak’s practical and team skills stood out on the day and he was shortlisted for several interviews but again was unsuccessful, with confidence being the main factor.

Zak’s ability and work ethic meant that PROCAT persevered in helping him to find an apprenticeship. The college helped him to work on his interview skills so that when he got an interview with Rodwell Engineering, he was finally successful and is now getting on well with the company and enjoying his work.

“We’re very pleased with Zak. He was very nervous on interview but he has come out of his shell now that he has got to know everyone. Zak fits in very well with the rest of the

team. His attendance and attitude are both very good. As he spent a few weeks with us in the summer before returning to college, he worked in Stores first which helped to familiarise him with the parts. He’s now getting his hands dirty in the workshop and is really enjoying it. We’re very happy with our new Apprentice.” – Rodwell Engineering Group

Zak said that he is enjoying all aspects of his work and that it makes a change from studying full time in college. He hopes to be kept on by Rodwell Engineering once he finishes his apprenticeship as he still wishes to pursue a career in engineering. In the future, Zak said that he might like to become a servicing engineer and would also consider the possibility of studying his HNC Level 4 Engineering with PROCAT if the opportunity was available to him.

In the summer of 2013 after I had just enrolled on my college course for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, I decided to search for a part time job to earn some extra pocket money and that’s when I found an apprentice vacancy for Rolls Royce.

The apprenticeship was full time which would clash with my current college commitments and it was located in Derby, over 150 miles from me! I looked into the Rolls Royce apprenticeship more and I was definitely interested. No doubt about it, this is a real alternative to going to university. Especially as you’ll be earning and learning and have full support in your training and development. So my goal was set. I decided that once I had finished full time education at college I wanted to be a Rolls Royce apprentice.

The Prospects College Aviation Academy does theory for 9 weeks followed by practical work also for 9 weeks, and then they swapped around four times in the whole year. I started off with theory which consisted of Maths, Health and Safety, and Aircraft Maintenance. The information we were given was quite advanced such as the maths being AS maths! Maths was my favourite, and Aircraft Maintenance was easier when I had subconsciously learned the notes from the slideshows we had used for information.

I finished my 9 weeks of theory and went down to the workshop to start my practical work and my first job was the Drill Drift. We had started a module called “Bench Fitting” where we made small tools. We also made a Drift Gage, a square in a square, and Tap Wrench before we got on to the Aeronautical module which consists of making parts which

would be inside an aircraft. Because I’m moderately weak I disliked the filing side of all these jobs, and quickly realised I would need to work on my arm strength so I joined the gym.

I have just completed my first full week of work experience which the College organised. I enjoyed this very much and it involved lots of hands on experience such as working on an aeroplane cockpit, the wings and all the way to the tail and even the engines!

Everything is moving along so fast and it is a great feeling to now know what I really want to do and not feel lost in my path. I have made some great friends at the college and I’m feeling focused.

The challenge is to keep going!

Felix Bateman is a second year railway apprentice, employed by Bombardier Transportation. He joined PROCAT straight from school and progressed through the college onto his apprenticeship. Felix became PROCAT’s first ever Student Governor this year after winning the student election. He is now the representative voice of students at the college.

Felix joined PROCAT from Castle View School after completing year 11. He always had a passion for engineering and constantly found himself interested in finding out about the way things work, particularly engines. When in year 10 at school, he did his work experience at the CNH Tractor Plant in Basildon and very much enjoyed it. It was at this point that Felix started to consider engineering as a possible career option.

After looking at routes into engineering careers, Felix was driven to apply to PROCAT and enrolled on Further Education Level 2 General Engineering course. He quickly took to the course, enjoying the practical nature of the programme over the classroom based learning that he was familiar with from school. Felix said that the course provided him with “a broad understanding of different types of engineering and was a good foundation for progressing into an apprenticeship”.

Towards the end of his course, Felix decided that he wanted to continue in engineering so started to look at apprenticeships. Following his progression interview in college, he was put forward for the Bombardier Transportation assessment day. Equipped with his passion for engineering and the skills he had learned on his previous course, he successfully completed the application process and was offered an apprenticeship. Felix said that the skills he acquired on his college course were very advantageous when going through the recruitment process.

Now in the second year of his apprenticeship, Felix is on a block release programme which means that he spends most of his time out at work and comes in to college one week in every six to study. He follows a work schedule, moving between depots, enabling him to do a variety of different types of maintenance work on the trains. The main depot in Ilford focusses on heavy maintenance but when going other sites he also performs lighter and reactive maintenance.

Felix thoroughly enjoys his work, observing that Bombardier really look after their staff with regards to training and support and that everyone he works with is always keen to help and provide support and guidance when required. He is really keen to continue working at Bombardier after the end of his apprenticeship and would like to build a career there.

FELIX BATEMAN – STUDENT GOVERNOR

“Equipped with his passion for engineering and the skills he had learned on his previous course, he successfully completed the application process and was offered an apprenticeship”.

Joe Gurney, with the support of Prospects College of Advanced Technology, has landed his dream job, earning and learning through an apprenticeship in Bricklaying. Joe has attended PROCAT full time since leaving school at 16 and, progressing through the college route, now finds himself at 18 in the final year of his bricklaying apprenticeship with a bright future in the construction industry ahead of him.

Joe’s first experience of the construction industry came when in year 9 he visited a trade school run by PROCAT. Joe was instantly attracted to the practical nature of the construction trades on display, and explained that “I liked the hands on work and it appealed to me more than being in a classroom all day”. Joe then opted to join the PROCAT Schools to Careers programme in years 10 and 11 enabling him to try out several different trades including carpentry and painting and decorating, but it was always bricklaying that stood out to Joe.

With this in mind, after his GCSEs, Joe decided to take his bricklaying interest full-time, enrolling on a Further Education Level One Bricklaying course with Prospects College of Advanced Technology. Joe’s tutor for the course was Section Head for Bricklaying, Bill Guiver. Bill said that “Joe was a natural and the quality of his work stood out in the group”. Joe’s talent and commitment to his course meant that by the end of his level one programme he was being recommended to Technical and Apprentice Advisor, Steve Healy as a suitable candidate for an apprenticeship.

PROCAT provide a full recruitment and matching service to employers and students, not just training students in the trade of their choice but also working with them to help them find a suitable apprenticeship so that they can become fully qualified whilst gaining experience and getting paid for the work that they do. It was in this way that Joe managed to obtain his apprenticeship.

Steve Healy described Joe as “a model student” and provided him with chance to go on a two week works trial with a company called A C Eales Builders Ltd. Joe was prepared for the opportunity both through the skills he had learned in college and through working for a window fitting company whilst on his level one course and during the summer. Joe knew exactly what would be expected of him in a work environment and was instantly successful, becoming an employed apprentice at the end of his trial. Joe is very pleased with the way he has progressed through the college. Joe continued to point out that he felt trusted by his employer, Tony Eales, who didn’t give him menial tasks because he was an apprentice but instead encouraged him to work and develop his skills.

Joe has now secured a job with A C Eales Builders Ltd for when he finishes his course and has recently been nominated for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award. Bill Guiver said that Joe “has a promising career in the construction industry ahead of him” and in line with this Joe said that in the future he would like to learn another trade, possibly plumbing and work towards running his own construction company. Joe would recommend an apprenticeship to others, observing that “I don’t know what I would be doing if I hadn’t come to PROCAT and learnt a trade”.
