Advanced Appliance Monitoring – Early Detection of Data Integrity Issues

The NetBackup Appliances continuously monitors all hardware components within the appliance – including all storage subsystems, to ensure prompt detection of any storage hardware errors that could cause data integrity issues.

If a storage hardware error is detected, the user is immediately alerted via an email, SNMP event and notification in the NetBackup Appliance web console. Users can then take immediate corrective action to ensure continuous availability of data on NetBackup

Appliances. This early notification of storage hardware errors is extremely useful when coupled with the RAID6 disk redundanc y system utilized by the NetBackup Appliance storage disks. RAID 6 ensures data availability despite the occurrence of two concu rrent drive failures to storage disks. NetBackup Appliance Monitoring will immediately alert users of any drive failures to allow users to take corrective action before more than 2 concurrent drives fail. This early detection system helps prevent data loss caused by mu ltiple, simultaneous drive failures.

Symantec Critical System Protection – IDS and IPS

The NetBackup 5330 Appliance offers both IPS (Intrusion Prevention) and IDP (Intrusion Detection) through Symantec Critical System Protection. This security solution monitors and acts on “normal state” and which provides Real-Time Proactive Enforcement, Intrusion/Malware Prevention, OS Hardening, Application Control, Privileged User access control, Vulnerability & Patch Mitigation, Real-time Monitoring & Auditing, Host Intrusion Detection, File Integrity Monitoring, Configuration Monitoring, Track and Monitor user access and Logging and Event Reporting.

Deduplication Storage System Data Integrity

The deduplication software on NetBackup Appliances is an extremely mature, robust and reliable data protection solution. Data integrity of data stored in the deduplication storage system is of primary concern in the storage system design. The data integrity protection provided is a full end-to-end solution, ensuring data integrity of all parts of the deduplication storage system.

When data is stored in the Deduplication pool in NetBackup Appliances, catalog objects, reference count objects and data stor e objects are created in the Deduplication Pool. These objects are l inked together using internal pointers/references in the Deduplication Pool. The sum of these internal objects and the pointers/references between them represent the backup data in the Deduplication Pool.

The deduplication storage system performs a twice-daily online data integrity check of all catalog objects, reference count objects and data store objects. The data integrity check also checks all the internal pointers and references between them. Any missing objects or pointers could indicate compromised data. The online integrity checking is run as a background maintenance task that does not affect data protection activities like backups, restores and duplication updates to the deduplication storage system. This separatio n of maintenance tasks and data protection tasks also allows data integrity checks to be run simultaneously with data protection tasks without jeopardizing performance.

In addition to verifying the presence and internal relationships of all objects, the deduplication storage system continuousl y runs a CRC patrol read that validates the identity of the objects by comparing CRC checksum values of the objects at write time with the CRC value computed during the CRC patrol read. This ensures that the data contained in the deduplication storage system has not b een unintentionally altered or corrupted in any way.

In most cases, the online data integrity check is able to self-correct any data integrity issues it finds. In cases where an unrecoverable data integrity issue is detected, a warning is sent to the NetBackup Adminis tration Console UI informing the user of compromised data. Since the NetBackup appliance is tightly integrated with NetBackup, the warning messages provide information on which backup point-in-time, client and policy is affected and suggests immediate remediation steps – which include re-running backups of affected clients and policies. This will adequately repopulate the corrupted portions of the deduplication storage system to restore any previously un-recoverable data.

Additionally, the deduplication storage system architecture allows for any unrecoverable portions of the deduplication storage system to be immediately isolated from the rest of the consistently correct storage system. Unrecoverable segments are marked for deletion and are essentially ejected from the deduplication storage system.

In the diagrams below the FP3 Data Store Segment has been compromised due to a fi lesystem or disk error. The deduplication storage system immediately isolates the error from the Data Store by marking it for deletion and removes the FP3 segment from the Fingerprint Store. This prevents the FP3 segment from being referred to again for any future backup jobs. This two -step process isolates any compromised data from the rest of the functioning data in the deduplication storage system.

Figure 5: FP3 Data Store Segment has been compromised due to a filesystem or disk error

Once an additional backup or backups occur and the FP3 Data Segment is seen in another backed up fi le, a new FP3 segment is created in the Data Store, completely ignoring the compromised data segment.

Figure 6: New FP3 segment created ignoring the compromised data segment.

Compromised data isolation is critical for deduplication storage systems as duplicate data can continue to be referenced as backups continue. If compromised segments are continuously referenced, data corruption could continue to spread within the deduplication pool, further worsening the impact of the corruption. As mentioned previously, a warning will be sent to NetBackup with detailed remediation steps to allow the user to repopulate the deduplication storage system with any compromised data. This increases the robustness of the storage system, allowing it to be continuously functional even when a portion of it is compromised.

Hardware Design Data Integrity

“Hardware Design Data Integrity” in NetBackup Appliances take an approach of isolating potential hardware issues by using separate components in the data flow rather than a monolithic configuration traditionally used by some Deduplication Appliances.

Data in flight through the system has three requirements: speed, availability and accuracy. Symantec uses a solution that balances all of the requirements. The most demanding activity of the system CPUs is the Deduplication handling of the backup data. Symantec Appliances use a discrete RAID controller to do the RAID calculation and transfer of the data to the near l ine disk drives. Since all the calculation is done “off CPU” the CPU is free to do the main jobs of the integra ted backup appliance.

NetBackup Appliances utilize a RAID 6 storage solution. With this solution, there can be two concurrent drives in ether failu re or rebuild mode. This is vital as with the ever-increasing size of disk drives, the rebuild times present a higher chance of concurrent drive failures. Symantec also provides a hot spare for every RAID set that automatically takes the place of a failed drive.

Since disk drives are one of the few components that are mechanical in nature and are the most numerous component in the system, they are the most frequent part that fails. When there is a failure, the RAID controller will start the rebuild of the RAID set using the hot spare drive. During the rebuild the RAID controller calculates the information that wi ll reside on the hot spare and then writes it to the drive. However, since the rebuild can be lengthy because of the drive size, it is l ikely the normal operations of backup and restore will be required during the rebuild. By using a discrete RAID controller, rather than a “software RAID” that util izes the system CPUs to do the parity and XOR calculation, as some Deduplication Appliances use, NetBackup appliances are better equipped to provide the combined speed, accuracy and availability expected. With two compute intensive operations, backup/Deduplication or restore/re-hydration and RAID restore happening at the same time, it is a best practice to segregate the operations so that neither function is adversely affected, especially in a high rate of Deduplic ation operation.

To ensure speed in an Integrated Backup Appliance it is important that the use of cache in the data path be used. This frees up the CPUs for backup, Deduplication and restore operations. NetBackup appliances utilize cache on the RAID controller for both reads and writes. The use of cache in write operations has one failure scenario: a power failure during write where the data to be written to d isk stil l reside in the cache during the power failure. This scenario is known as an “incomplete write”. NetBackup util izes a Maintenance Free Backup Unit to guard against such a scenario. The Maintenance Free Backup Unit utilizes a combination “Super-capacitor” and NVRAM configuration. In the event of a power loss, the data in the RAID controller cache is transferred to the NVRAM. Upon restoration of power, the data in the NVRAM is then transferred back to the cache and the data is then written to the disk dr ives.

Cache is also available on disk drives. Symantec configures the drives so that write cache on the drives is not used, but that read cache is. In the event of the power failure scenario noted earlier, there is no protection of the drive cache. Once power is removed from a disk drive, the data in the cache is gone. Since we do not enable write cache on the drives there is no danger of incomplete writes. In the case of the read cache, since the source of the data is the disk drive, that data can be resent when power is restored.
