Approximately 50% of young men of color in our country’s urban areas (Orfield, 2004) do not finish high school. It is now well established that the human, as well as economic loss to us as a nation is both epidemic (Bridgeland, 2006) and catastrophic and has only worsened during economic recession ( Harrington, 2009).

Many of our young men are being pushed out of a school system that is not challenging to their intellect (Bridgeland, 2006), criminalizes them (Nolan, 2010), and exposes them to potential physical violence and emotional trauma. (Rich, 2009)

“Studies around urban stressors (racism and poverty) and exposure to violence suggest that many young men of color are experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).”
