VEGETABLE SEED PRODUCTION

Seed Production and seedling production is highly profitable venture in Belur and Hassan Taluks.

Model Nursery unit established under National Horticulture Mission is sufficient to cater the needs of skill training.

However seed packing and processing unit is required to cater the need. This pilot plant is essential because individual farmers can not establish processing plant.

This will serve as pilot plant for seed producersThis will used for practical training

CUSTOM HIRE CENTREUse of agricultural machinery during the last decades

has increased at a faster rate.

Land holding is still a serious limitation in the mechanization.

Under these circumstances the role of custom higher centre for sustainable agriculture and economy will be more important.

To demonstrate such model for NREGA, there is a need to establish model custom hire centre for mechanization.

Training on bio fertilizers and bio agentsPreparations

- The farmers of all clubs are using Rhizobium and PSB for seed treatment for pulses.

- 5 farmers are producing the Ha.NPV and selling for other farmers and earning about Rs.5000/ month.- Mass multiplication of Trichoderma- 50 members.

ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMUNITY NURSERY

ACHIEVEMENTS

• 17 training courses on community nursery - 75 SHG -under the trainer trainee concept with the women cell members.

• 25 training courses on community nursery with the assistance of DRDA for 720 beneficiaries

• Two Self Help Group at Michealpalayam had started a nursery in the year 2006-Selling one lakh seedlings per year (Neem, Tamarind, Amla, Silk Cotton).

• One Self Help Group started vegetable nursery at Achampatty in the year 2008- selling 50000 seedlings per year (Tomato, Brinjal). Profit of Rs.30000/year

ORGANIC VEGETABLE PRODUCTIONACHIEVEMENTS

• 153 training courses on Organic vegetable production with the assistance of National Horticultural Mission and National Centre for Organic farming for 3750 beneficiaries.

• Training on Organic vegetable to the extension functionaries in 4 batches with the financial assistance from National Centre for Organic farming.

• Organic farmers group were formed based on their commodities, Organic Banana group at Siramapuram village, Organic coconut association/federation/SHG at Dharmathupatty village, Organic Seed growers association at Kannivadi village. Model marketing ICT linkage module has been created for the farmers of Kannivadi. Now they are having their own web site www.oddanchatarm.com .They are providing day to day market forecast to the farmers.

RURAL HANDICRAFTS

ACHIEVEMENTS

• 27 training courses on 10 handicraft trades with the assistance of DRDA to SHGs for 475 beneficiaries for three to five days, with special emphasis on awareness, in coordination with Rotary club and other NGOs.

• Training on Rural Handicrafts was imparted to the extension functionaries from NGOs ( 25 beneficiaries)with the financial assistance from CAPART.

• Three SHGs are now having the market outlet at DSMS on handicraft products

Achievements of KVK

Success stories…• A group of 10 ladies formed a group

named ‘Krishi Sahayi’• Last season they have transplanted

paddy in an area of 50 acres• They are earning Rs. 3500/- per

month• The group has undertaken

harvesting in an area of 75 acres earning Rs. 150/hr.

Helical Blade Puddler –for effective land preparation

Technology developed by Kerala Agricultural UniversitySaves around 40 per cent diesel and about 50 per cent time

KVK demonstrated the technology successfully and 4 farmers are currently utilizing the technology

Acute shortage of labour to do coconut harvesting

necessitate youth trained in operating

coconut climbing machinery

TNAU Model RAIDCO Model

COCONUT CLIMBERS

15 persons, including ladies, have undergone trainings from KVK

They are now employing the technology in farmers fields

Udyanamitra Garden Transplanter

Transplanting all categories of vegetable seedlings without transplanting shock.

Technology was assessed and refined by the KVK

Currently 20 farmers use this technology under field conditions

POST HOLE DIGGER

KVK has already demonstrated the technology to 10 farmers

BUND FORMERBunds with 30 cm width and depth

Attached with tractorSuitable for vegetables and tapioca

CONSTRAINTS…….

Difficulty in mobilizing men youth as they are

involved in other remunerative activities like sand

mining

Small size of holdings of farmers in Malappuram

District

Unsuitability of machineries for special situations

Confusion regarding the ownership and

management of machineries
